I took Murphy to The Game Fair today for some environment training. Despite it only being Friday it was really busy with LOTS going on but the boy bossed it! Absolutely no reactivity towards big fluffy dogs ! We even managed a few fun little gundog scurries , he did a lovely job with everything else going on around him ! A seen and a blind retrieve 💙

🐶♥️ Hunting together! ♥️🐶

Really nice to see the boys working together, hunting for dummies I had planted previously.

This requires team work and trust , something we are still building with Murphy and it’s great to see him transferring the skills I teach him to his partnership with Rob . Proud mum/wifey moment 💕

18/07/2024

Ahhh I am sooooo proud of this boy! 💙

Everything we’ve done over the past year and a half was

search ->find ->grab ->bring back

so a passive indication is not something Murphy offered automatically.

I got a bit frustrated as he searches really nicely and lost my mojo to do the indication work .

But not everything works for every dog so trying a different approach seems to really work for Murphy 💙

I’ll be looking at moving further around and throwing a 2nd Kong in when progressing 🙌

Thank you Kat from K9 Behaviour Consultancy for getting us fired up about indication work 🔥

➡️ Don’t skip the steps! 😂
If you know you know 😂🫣😂🫣

𝗥𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸: "All you need to do is to be very strict from the beginning so they learn what their place is".

𝗠𝗲: 🙄

A few weeks ago, I was working with a client and her cute pup, and this is what a member of the public told us when they saw us doing some training together. They might have been well-meaning - but also extremely misinformed.

❌ You do not need to use intimidation, punishment, and aversives, or be 'very strict' with your dog to show them what their place is because you don't need to show them what their place is in the first place! ❌

This type of thinking comes from what is known as the 'dominance theory'. This theory has led professionals, as well as dog owners, to design and apply training techniques based on punishment, coercion and aversion.

This tendency has been probably motivated by the belief that for dogs to be well-behaved, humans need to assert their authority using force and intimidation to be the 'alpha', the 'dominant pack leader', the 'top dog' and prevent dogs from achieving a higher social status over them and become 'dominant'.

There are so many problems with this.

📚 Early studies and flawed foundations.

The 'dominance theory' is incorrect. The early studies on wolves' behaviour have been based on groups of captive unrelated wolves forced to form artificial groups and share the same territory and resources, which inevitably led them to compete over these resources through aggression.

Wild wolves living naturally in their habitat, on the other hand, rather than a strict hierarchical organisation, form cohesive and cooperative social structures which resemble more a family group, where aggression is rarely seen between individuals and where it does not serve the purpose of achieving a higher social status (Mech, 2008; Eaton, 2011)

🐺 Dogs are not wolves.

Another problem with the 'dominance theory' is the assumption that wolves and dogs behave and form similar social structures as they share a common ancestor. Whilst the fact that they share a common ancestor is undoubtedly true, dogs have changed a lot from wolves since domestication, and the social groups they form are very different from those formed by wolves (Eaton, 2011; Miklósi, 2015).

Studies about free-ranging feral dogs show how their social structures are loose and fluid, with unrelated individuals coming and going, and that the relationship between the breeding pair and the offspring is fundamentally different too, with the mother being the main and mostly the only provider for her puppies, and with breeding behaviour being more influenced by reproductive cycles and the situation rather than by the existence of a family-like group of related individuals like in wolves (Coppinger and Coppinger, 2002; Van Kerkhove, 2004; Miklósi, 2015).

The same can be said for groups of domestic dogs, who rather than strict and hierarchical structures or 'packs', seem to form loose and fluid social groups, where their interactions, and in particular aggressive behaviours, are not driven by the aim of achieving a higher social status within their group (Van Kerkhove, 2004; Bradshaw et al., 2009).

🏆 Being 'dominant' is not about status.

It's now important to note that the word 'dominant' has been erroneously used for decades to describe an individual, as if 'being dominant' was an individual trait, a character trait.

What the word 'dominant' really defines is not a status, but it refers to those behaviours that are displayed in relation to other individuals and that have been learned in order to acquire and maintain access to those resources that a dog values the most, and that might well be different between the same two individuals when the resource in question is different (Bradshaw et al., 2009; Eaton, 2011).

The truth is that unlike wolves, domestic dogs do not need to form packs with other dogs in order to survive as they don’t need to cooperate to hunt and find food: all their needs are provided for by us, their human carers.

We also know that dogs don’t form packs with us either and that they are not in competition with us, but they are part of our social group, of our family.

👉 In other words, dogs are not domesticated wolves, and they are not trying to dominate us.

This means there is truly no need to use methods based on the need to 'dominate' our dogs. Reward-based training techniques that support kinder, ethical and cooperative methods work and, the way I see it, are just much nicer for all the involved. ✌️

A fabulous morning training this morning before it got too hot ☀️☀️☀️

Alfie is learning good behaviour in and around his owner’s walking aid. This is an essential life skill for Alfie in order to keep his owner and himself safe.

At almost 8 month of age, Alfie loves learning and exploring his surroundings and we are making sure it’s done appropriately and safely.💙

Day 2 of the Trainer CPD with K9 Behaviour Consultancy and I decided to bring the boy! 🐶

Plenty of potential triggers for Murphy but together and with the support of Kat and the other trainers we managed really well and were able to get some really nice indication reps in!

It’s always a bit daunting for me to work M in front of others in case it all goes t**s up but I actually really enjoyed this! 🙌🙌

⭐️ Walk & Train ⭐️

Rosie has been joining our adventure walks to gain confidence and exposure to different environments.

We have also been working on problem -solving skills and building resilience, she’s a spaniel so she loves sniffing and searching so we have been integrating this into our training plan.

We’ve been teaching Rosie to retrieve a ball so here we are asking her to go out and work away from us, searching for a ball, pick it up and bring it back. So many things for her to think about but little Rosie smashed it! 👏👏👏

At 7 months Alfie is heading towards adolescence but owner Mick is not worried - we have been working with Alfie on manners and basic obedience for a few months now so Mick will just continue to be consistent and fair whilst Alfie’s hormones are having a bit of a roller coaster ride 🎢

Today we practised settling and good behaviour at the pub. Thank you to Hannah & the team for providing a perfect environment and delicious coffee!

⚠️ Resource Guarding ⚠️

Murphy is a resource guarder (we found it pretty soon after he joined us 😅) so we have been working on his confidence and teaching him that he doesn’t loose anything valuable when we are around. Always with lots of positivity, never scolding as resource guarders are worried and meeting worry with pressure will always make things so much worse. It’s not about dominance, it’s about building trust.

Murphy absolutely loves his hoof and it’s great to see that he is comfortable around me with it and happy to share it💙

It’s going to be another ☀️☀️☀️ hot day so we were out early this morning on the river, introducing Murphy to the paddle board (and the buoyancy aid!).

He took it all in his stride and built confidence getting on and off the board in deep water, retrieving on and off the board and of course sitting nicely on the board whilst I paddle around.

Really pleased with how it all went, we didn’t paddle far but had lots of fun trying new things together!💦💦🐶🐶

☀️☀️☀️ Due to hot weather we have cancelled ALL outdoor sessions from 12 midday on wards for TODAY/TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY . It is simply too hot to train or to walk the dogs.

Morning sessions will still go ahead as scheduled.

Give them a day off, play some low activity nosework games or set up an enrichment area indoors or in the shade for them instead .

No dog has died because they skipped a walk but plenty of dogs die of heat stroke every summer.

Keep your dogs cool 😎🍦🐶

🐶 Nail Scratch Boards 🐶

This has just arrived ! Trudy has black nails so I’m worried I cut into the quick and Murphy … well he will now let me look and touch is paws and even hold them to investigate but cutting his nails is still a goal for the future .

Because I don’t do much pavement walking with my dogs, their nails don’t wear down naturally so I need to do something to keep them short.

I’m really looking forward to start training with this , I like the concept that my dogs are taking an active part in this rather than enduring a procedure. Giving them agency rather than enforcing.

Watch this space 👀

Thank you Nicola from Scentdog for sending this out so promptly and Sarah from Diverse Canine Consultancy for the recommendation 👍

Hector is a fabulous young spaniel but his owners are struggling getting his attention when outdoors- everything seems more exciting than a few treats from mum and dad!

We went right back to basics and showed Hector some fun Focus and Engagement games, we also looked at his reinforcers and how we can tweak the delivery - elevating what we’ve got for him even more!

We looked beyond treats and assessed what Hector REALLY loves and how access to this can be used as positive reinforcement!

Lastly , we offered Hector something calming after a busy session. He can be a bit worried about new environments so our natural chew was the perfect ending to a fun and successful session!

Today something very special happened ♥️

Rosie has been joining our Walk & Train sessions and more than anything we have been focussing on confidence building. Rosie can be a little unsure about the world and when I met her, she was very worried about bodies of water.

We have been taking it slow and steady, hanging out around water , looking at water, having fun around water , going into water together, watching other dogs play in the water … no pressure, just building trust and making positive associations.

Today, Rosie decided it was time to go for a dip ! 👙☀️💦

I love it when a plan comes together!👍
