Huge congratulations to Nurse Caroline who has passed all her exams and is now a fully qualified RVN!
Caroline is an extremely valued member of the hospital team and worked tirelessly throughout her studies which she balanced alongside full time work.

Well done Caroline! Your flowers and cake were well earned!

At Fyrnwy and Wrexham Equine, we offer full lameness investigations and referral services.

Onsite at the hospital we have an MRI scanner with no need for general anaesthesia. This further imaging modality uses strong magnetic fields to gather images of inside the lower limb including detail of soft tissue structures, allowing us to provide accurate diagnosis efficiently and creating a treatment plan quickly.

The images from the MRI are all in black and white with different tissues responding differently to the magnetic fields. Distinguishing between the bones, tendons, ligaments clearly can result in reduced time and money spent finding the problem in a lame horse.

We have a skilled orthopedic team within the practice specialising in lameness and poor performance.

Don’t hesitate to contact the practice for further information on 01939 260251 or 01978 664459 or to refer a case

🩵Receptionist appreciation post 🩵

We wanted to take the chance to thank our wonderful reception team. They are the first point of contact for clients when calling the practice. The reception team are always busy keeping the Vet’s and Nurse’s in order, listening to client queries, receiving orders, dealing with insurance claims and answering the phones that never stop ringing! They manage to do all this with a smile on their faces and always have time to say hello!

Thank you so much for all you do!!

*****Case of the Week*****

Andrew was recently called out to see this mare who had managed to get injured whilst out in the field.

The fence post was removed and the mare was admitted to the hospital.
Tim and the hospital team did some further investigations (including X-rays and endoscopy) which showed the fence post had penetrated into the caudal maxillary sinus and caused some small bone fragments to come away. The team spent some time removing each fragment and then the sinuses were lavaged for a few days before being closed up and the mare was discharged back home.

The mare has made a brilliant recovery and is back enjoying what she loves most!

Under current legislation, your horse must have a passport and microchip.

All foals must have a passport and microchip by the time they are 6 months old or by 30th November in the year they were born (whichever comes first).

If you’re unsure, ask one of our vets to scan your horses microchip next time they are with you.

Applying for a passport is straightforward and is something we offer on our zone visits!

These can all be signs of gastric ulcers. To diagnose gastric ulcers we need to pass a camera into the stomach to visualise the the inside of it. This is called a gastroscope.

*****TIME FOR THE MANE EVENT*****

There is now a vaccine to help prevent your horse suffering from Sweet Itch!

Sweet Itch (Culicoides Hypersensitivity) is an allergic reaction to bites from midges which can affect any breed/age of horse or pony and reportedly affects around 5% of horses in the UK.
Early diagnosis and treatment will give a much better chance of effective management.
Itching is typically focused on the mane and tail (but not exclusive).
Management options include good quality full body rugs, fly repellent, stabling at dawn and dusk and avoiding water logged areas.
Sadly, there is no cure and management can be tricky. Different horses will respond differently to different strategies.

There is also an option of vaccination. Originally developed to treat ringworm, the vaccine has also shown good results against Sweet Itch.
Based on field trials, the initial course consists of three vaccinations, two weeks apart, with a 4th vaccine a few months later for extreme cases.
Ideally the vaccines need to be started before the warmer weather so we typically would give them in February/March to get best results.

If you would like to speak to a vet for more advice or call to book an appointment then call the office on 01939 260251 or 01978 664459

⭐️ UPDATE FLU VACCINATIONS⭐️

As of January 1st 2024 there have been changes to the vaccination protocols for some equestrian sports.

We encourage all owners to read the below sheet and familiarise themselves with the new protocols.
Vaccinations that are currently up-to-date will not be affected by the new timings of the primary course. All horses starting a new course of vaccines after January 1st will need to follow the below guidelines.

🐎Please note that rules differ between organisations and venues. Check when you are entering what is required! It is your responsibility to make sure your horse's vaccines are up to date

If you have any questions or wish to book your horse in for a vaccine, please don't hesitate to contact the office on 01939 260251 or 01978 664459

We are so delighted to welcome back Chessie Greenham to our fabulous team of equine vets. I'm sure you will remember Chessie but if not here is a little update on what Chessie has been doing over the last few years.

Chessie graduated in 2017 from the University of Liverpool and worked at our Wrexham branch before completing the internship at Fyrnwy. She then stayed on for four years as an ambulatory vet.
Chessie then moved to Yorkshire where she spent two years continuing stud work and focusing more on racing work spending time on both thoroughbred and standard bred yards as well as attending race days.

Last year Chessie passed her certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice focusing on Equine Stud Medicine.

Chessie still enjoys all aspects of her ambulatory role with particular interests in Stud work, Medicine, Emergencies and Racing work.

When not in work Chessie can usually be found experimenting in the kitchen or enjoying an adventure through the countryside.

🎄On the 12th day of Christmas Fyrnwy Equine Hospital brings to you a mystery ultrasound picture and the last of our prize giveaways.

This is an unusual area of anatomy to ultrasound scan and was done in the hospital by our medical specialist Luanne Hunt. We are very fortunate as a practice to have a wide range of imaging modalities available to the vets which aid them in making quick and accurate diagnosis.

So its competition time!!
Comment below your guesses as to which part of the horse has been scanned. All correct answers will be put into a hat on Monday 18th December and the winner will receive a free winter health check visit to your yard, to include:
• a general check up
• routine dental
• faecal worm egg count

🎄On the 11th day of Christmas Fyrnwy brings to you the last of our appreciation posts.

Over the last several days we have spent time reflecting on our team and what they mean to us here at Fyrnwy. Sharing with our teams that we appreciate them and everything they achieve is important as it's often overlooked. Our biggest acknowledgment is for you, our clients. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for supporting us throughout the years. Many of you will have been with us from the start and are still supporting us now. From looking after your first ponies right the way through to retirement horses. It is always a wonderful moment to read all the thank you cards you send and the chocolates and biscuits are always a winner with the team. We are here to care for your beloved equines as we all know how much they mean to you, and we do all we can to make that journey as enjoyable as possible.

So for this we are sending a little heartfelt appreciation your way today! Just wanted to express our deep gratitude for the loyalty and support. 🎄🐴☃️
