Day 2:

«How humane are we really?" (with Risë VanFleet) was the title of the workshop we attended today. When we talk to professionals within the field of animal-assisted servises, there is broad agreement that animal welfare is one of the most important factors for good practice. Nevertheless, we see that in many situations involving animal-assisted services, little consideration is given to the welfare of the animals.

Both pictures and videos show animals clearly exhibiting stress-related signals. We see animals being restrained, placed in unnatural environments, or lacking an easy way out of a distressing situation. This raises the question: Why do we not always live up to our own standards for good animal welfare?

There are likely several reasons for this. Perhaps it is because we have different definitions of what welfare really means. Or could it be due to a lack of knowledge? In some cases, we may unconsciously objectify the animals, viewing them as tools rather than living beings with their own needs and boundaries. At times, we may not be fully present or attentive enough to what is happening in the moment. These are important reflections we must carry with us in our continued work with animal-assisted services.
