Join Will for a quick update on our Barley Fields
We planted our barley at the very end of April, and we’re thrilled with how it’s growing. Despite the unpredictable mix of weather we’ve had this year, the barley is thriving and looking fantastic. It’s had to deal with mini heatwaves, torrential rain, sunny spells, surprise showers, and everything in between. But our resilient barley is soaking it all up and standing strong.
In just about a month, we’ll be ready to combine the barley grain, leaving behind the stunning golden stems. These stems will become our beautiful Barley Straw, perfect for your little ones 🐇
As Will shared a fact in the video, here’s another... Did you know that barley is one of the oldest cultivated grains in the world? It was first domesticated around 10,000 years ago in the Middle East. Today, it’s used in everything from hearty soups to refreshing beers and pet products (straw)!

Field Day: Meadow Hay takes the lead!
This June has (finally!) brought us plenty of sun, perfect for hay-making, so we asked Will to take a quick break and give us a update on all things Pillow Wad harvest!
Meadow Hay: A Sunny Success
We’ve been busy in the meadows, starting with mowing and then tedding - which flicks the hay, spreads it around and throws it everywhere - allowing it to all dry nice and evenly. It’s all about timing, making sure each blade dries just right, tested by the old ‘twist and snap’ method to check moisture content.
The result? Beautifully dry hay, full of nutrients and goodness, ready for us to bale 🌾
Timothy & Barley: Growing Strong
Both our Timothy and Barley are looking really healthy and robust with a promising harvest ahead! We’re hoping to mow them at the same time (🤞🏼), but for now, Meadow Hay has definitely taken the lead thanks to the sunshine.

Think of it as giving each field a new ‘crop outfit’ each year. It’s our way of making sure the soil stays as beautifully healthy as the hay it produces. By changing up our crops, we keep the earth guessing and pests guessing even more. Here’s why we love it...
Pest Control 🦠
Different crops attract different microbes. Rotating crops each year stops microbes from flourishing...without the heavy use of chemicals! ⛔️
Nutrient Boost 🌱
Each type of crop absorbs different nutrients from the soil. Switching it up (like swapping barley with beans) helps replenish nitrogen naturally - perfect for next year’s healthy growth.
Banish Weeds 🌿
