IMPORTANT! We’ve had to make the difficult decision to POSTPONE our dog show tomorrow due to the dire weather forecast. ☔️⛈️🌩️ It would be no fun for anyone - humans or dogs - to be schlepping around in mud and rain and the predictions for tomorrow are torrential downpours and storms for most of the day. 😱

We will instead be moving the event to next weekend on Saturday 28th September and we hope you can make it (and that the weather Gods give us a break!). We will contact everyone who has already booked with more info asap.

Thank you everyone for your support - the good old British weather does it again… sigh. 🤪

🌈 RIP Blossom. We’ve had to say a sad goodbye to Blossom the rabbit who passed away peacefully after a full and happy life here at Hopefield last week. It never gets easier saying those final farewells, but we console ourselves knowing that we gave her all the love and care she deserved. 🫶

We recently started asking all of our visitors for feedback- the good and the not so good - via a post-visit email, and your comments have been really useful, so a big thank you to everyone who responded. Being able to see where we excel, and where we can improve is vital for us to be able to be the best we can when it comes to your experience at the sanctuary as a visitor.

A few of you mentioned our toilet facilities, signage and shade, so just to let you all know we’ve already implemented, now the busy period is over:

⭐ Toilet glow-up! Our handyman, Mick, is busy redecorating all the toilet areas around the sanctuary and installing new toilet roll dispensing units and hand soap units in all. We’re getting the floors replaced and have also put in place a more rigorous cleaning schedule. We’ll also be having hand dryers installed soon thanks to an amazing local company who have offered to help.

⭐ We’ve ordered new tables and chairs to give more access for you to take a rest or have a snack at - and have already purchased lots more parasols too to help with the lack of shade issue.

⭐ We’ve ordered more signage for around the sanctuary, including better directional signs, more stories for our animal enclosures, signs that convey our ethos (as per the one pictured) and some sanctuary info signage which will help you understand more about and what we do here.

Don’t forget, if ever you do want to send us any feedback then you’re always welcome to pop us an email at [email protected] - it really does help us, so thank you!

URGENT HELP NEEDED TO FIX ANIMAL SHELTER ROOF! Earlier this year the wind gave our field shelter a good battering and blew it right down. We did have someone lined up to help us but timings have not worked out, and we’re desperate to get this done before winter weather creeps up, and leaves us a shelter down). If you know any carpenters who would be willing to lend a much-needed hand then we would be very grateful for the help! Please email [email protected] if you can come to our rescue.

Good news! Our wonderful volunteer, Sam, has joined us as a full-time member of staff as an animal caregiver! 🎉

He says, “I love being at Hopefield as it combines two of the things I love best - animals and exercise! I get a LOT of steps back and forth to the fields as part of my role, so it saves me a fortune on gym membership! I’m so happy to be part of the team.” 🐾

Let’s give an official big welcome to Sam, everyone! 🎉

We know how much you all love our exotic animals, and we’re as gutted as you are that we can’t have them on display all year round. Rest assured though that even without the public around to give them attention, they are very much loved behind the scenes by our staff and volunteers. Pongo here does love his Lianne snuggles! 🦨

If you do want to come down and see our meerkats, skunks, birds of prey and more then you need to know about our next - and last for 2024 - Exotic Animal Weekend happening on 5th & 6th October. There will be an exotic animal trail, inflatables, BBQ and more and we can’t wait to throw ALL the doors open around Hopefield for that weekend.🐾

It’s Friday the 13th which we think is a great day to highlight how AMAZING black cats like Jet (and any other black animals) are. Statistically, black cats and dogs wait four times longer to get adopted from shelters than their lighter coloured buddies. In fact, it’s such an issue that the lack of positive response towards adopting dark coloured four-legged friends even has a name: Black Dog & Cat Syndrome. But why is this?

Traditionally it was because black animals were thought to be unlucky, but in this day and age that seems quite absurd a reason not to adopt a wonderful animal because of its colour. There is a widespread, more modern theory that it is actually because black pets are more difficult to photograph… Yes, people really can be that shallow that their pet isn’t social media worthy! It baffles us. But then humans often baffle us. 💔

Jet has been with us for three years this week, and we’ve loved every single minute with this bundle of fun! Black cats rock. 🎉

Do share photos of your gorgeous black pets in the comments - we know that plenty of you don’t buy into the whole unlucky / un-photo worthy black pet nonsense!

Our beautiful boy, Ernie the donkey, turned six years old yesterday! 🎂

Ernie’s mum, Regina, was heavily pregnant when she arrived at the sanctuary, having been found abandoned and tied to a lamppost in London. After a vet check, signs indicated that her foal would be stillborn so you can imagine our joy when little Ernie arrived very much alive, healthy and perfect in every way. 💙

Happy birthday, Ernie! 🎉

Is there anything more likely to cheer your Thursday morning than a bright, happy canary? We have lots of different birds in our mixed aviary, and they never fail to make us smile with their chirpy, cheery ways. We’ll be back open to the public tomorrow morning from 10am so come down and say hello to all of our residents - they love seeing you all! 💛

🎉 We have a NEW AMBASSADOR! Genesis Butler is a 17-year-old Afro Indigenous animal rights and environmental activist and is one of the youngest to give a TEDx talk. Inspired by her great uncle civil rights leader Cesar Chavez, Genesis' talk "A 10 Year Old's Vision for Healing the Planet" discussed the negative impact of animal agriculture on the environment. As a leading voice of a generation of activists concerned about climate change, Genesis has spoken at many events worldwide including the Seeds and Chips Global Food Summit, Hollywood Climate Summit and the Environmental Media Association Impact Summit. Genesis was named a real life superhero by Marvel due to her animal advocacy and was featured in Marvel Hero Project on Disney+ . She is the founder of the nonprofit organisation, Genesis for Animals, which raises funds for animal sanctuaries. In 2019, Genesis wanted to continue her activism despite quarantine so she started a global youth-led climate organisation, Youth Climate Save, which raises awareness on the connection between animal agriculture and climate change. This organisation now has over 80 chapters worldwide and helps to mobilise climate activists including providing funding for tree planting, beach clean-ups and outreach. Genesis' activism has been featured by Harvard, Time for Kids, People, Nickelodeon, Marvel, Crate and Kids, The New York Times, Washington Post and many more.

Thanks for being part of the team, Genesis! 💙🐾

The butterflies from our recent Bug Week were released into the wild this weekend. Sadly many butterflies and insects are in decline in the UK due to habitat loss, climate change and pesticide use amongst other reasons. To help boost insect and butterfly populations in your local area, how about trying some of these bug-boosters?

🦋 Grow insect-friendly plants.
🦋 Create a log pile.
🦋 Let an area of your garden grow wild.
🦋 Create a compost heap.
🦋 Build a pond.
🦋 Nurture your hedges.
🦋 Plant wildflowers.

Don't forget to tag us in all your insect encouragement endeavours! 🪲🐜🐝🐛🐞

Our story

Hopefield Animal Sanctuary is a non-profit organisation that provides a forever home to over 500 sick, unwanted and mistreated animals. We are based in Brentwood, Essex, and are located just a short walk away from Brentwood High Street, so easily accessible by public transport. We care for a vast array of animals, from horses, pigs, sheep and rabbits, to more exotic animals including raccoons, parrots, reptiles and meerkats! We have a lovely plant-based tearoom on site that serves an extensive menu including; sandwiches, baguettes, cakes, snacks, hot food, hot & cold drinks, children’s lunch boxes and so much more! You can also find a children’s play area in the events paddock. We’re open Friday – Monday, 11am to 4pm, and EVERY day during the school holidays. Throughout the year, we hold fun days, perfect for all the family, to help us raise much-needed funds, so check our website and social media pages for more information on those. As a small charity, we rely on donations and fundraising generated from being open to the public, and it’s with thanks to the continued support that we’ve received, that we’re able to continue the crucial work that we do: Saving Animals Together. We look forward to welcoming you to the sanctuary soon.
