🎃 Happy Halloween from all of us at Happy Paws Vets! 👻🐶🐱

We hope you and your furry friends have a spooktacular day filled with fun (and maybe a few treats)! 🦇🍬

While you enjoy the festivities, here are a few Halloween safety tips and fun facts to keep your pets happy and healthy:

🐾 1. Keep the sweets out of paws’ reach!
Chocolate, especially dark chocolate, is toxic to dogs and cats. Xylitol (found in sugar-free sweets and gum) is also highly dangerous for pets.

🐾 2. Costumes can be cute – if your pet agrees!
Some pets enjoy dressing up, but others may find it stressful. Make sure costumes are comfortable, non-restrictive, and never left on unsupervised.

🐾 3. Trick-or-treat traffic = extra caution.
Open doors, visitors, and spooky sounds can be overwhelming. Keep pets in a quiet room if they get nervous, and make sure they’re microchipped and have up-to-date ID tags just in case they sneak out.

🐾 4. Did you know?
🕯️ Pumpkins are safe for dogs in small amounts (plain, cooked, and unseasoned)!
🐈 Black cats have long been linked to Halloween – but they’re symbols of good luck in many cultures!

✨ From all of us at Happy Paws Vets — stay safe, have fun, and give your pets a little extra cuddle tonight. 💜

🐾 Meet Emma – Our Amazing Animal Care Assistant! 🐾

We’re so happy to welcome Emma to the Happy Paws team! She’s been with us for just three weeks, but it already feels like she’s been here forever — she’s fitted in perfectly! 💚

Emma has nearly 10 years of experience in animal care. She began her journey at Pencoed College, gaining qualifications in Animal Care and Animal Management, before spending over nine years at St James Veterinary Group building her skills and experience.

Caring for animals is truly Emma’s passion. At home, she’s kept busy by her three spoiled dogs, who love long walks and plenty of cwtches on the sofa! 🐕✨

Outside of work, Emma enjoys spending time with friends, going to the cinema, and a bit of paddle boarding when she gets the chance.

We’re so lucky to have her on board and can’t wait for you all to meet her and see the care she gives to every pet she meets! 💚

✨ Aurora’s Story ✨

Back in August, we welcomed Aurora, a sweet 3-year-old French Bulldog, to our practice under some very worrying circumstances. Her mum noticed she was struggling during labour and showing signs of dystocia (difficulty giving birth). After being advised elsewhere to “wait it out,” her mum trusted her instincts and called our emergency line. 💚

Within the hour, our team met Aurora and her family at the practice. After a careful assessment, it was clear she needed a C-section. Aurora was admitted to our little hospital and, with the help of our veterinary team, she safely delivered 3 beautiful, healthy puppies. A few hours later, Aurora was already back home—recovering well and surrounded by her new family. 🐾🐶🐾

We’re delighted to share that when we recently saw Aurora and her pups, they were all thriving. Seeing them so happy and healthy makes our work so rewarding, and we’re proud to have played a part in their story. 🐾🐶💚

🐾 Billy’s Journey – Why Pre-Anaesthetic Bloods & IV Fluids Matter 🐾

This is Billy, our lovely 10-year-old miniature Dachshund, who recently came to us for a dental procedure.

The procedure itself went smoothly. However, the following day Billy became very unwell – he was lethargic, dehydrated, and experiencing vomiting and diarrhoea. When we admitted him back into hospital, blood tests revealed that he had developed a severe kidney and liver injury.

Fortunately, with intensive care and IV fluids, Billy made a wonderful recovery 💚 – and we couldn’t be happier to see him back on his paws!

👉 Why are we sharing this?
Before any anaesthetic, we always offer pre-anaesthetic blood tests and intravenous (IV) fluids. These are optional, but they provide an important safety net:

🧪 Blood tests can detect hidden issues with organs such as the kidneys or liver.

💧 IV fluids support vital organs, help maintain blood pressure, and aid recovery from anaesthesia.

Billy’s story is a great reminder of just how valuable these extra steps can be in keeping our pets safe and helping them bounce back quickly after procedures.

We’re so pleased Billy is doing well – and sharing his journey might help others understand why these options are so strongly recommended. 🐶💖

📌 If your pet is ever scheduled for a procedure, please consider pre-anaesthetic bloods and IV fluids. They can make all the difference.

💔 From Fighting for His Life… to Chasing Butterflies Again 🐾✨

Bobby’s incredible comeback story 🐶❤️

Bobby is a 10-month-old Cocker Spaniel, full of life, joy, and mischief — just like any healthy, happy pup should be.

Until one day everything changed.
He suddenly became violently unwell — vomiting, lethargy, diarrhoea.
He wouldn’t eat. He wouldn’t move.
He was fading fast.

His worried parents rushed him to us at Happy Paws thinking maybe he’d eaten something naughty. A bit of scavenging, perhaps? A bad tummy?

We examined him and thought the same:
👉 “Maybe a foreign body… let’s investigate.”

But nothing prepared anyone for what came next.

🔬 He tested positive for parvovirus.
Yes — PARVO.
That devastating, often deadly virus that most of us only read about in textbooks.

💉 And Bobby was fully vaccinated.
Even so — parvovirus can still strike, rarely, brutally, and without warning.

🚨 For the next 8 days, Bobby was in intensive care.

We mean real intensive care.
Day and night. No breaks.
He had everything thrown at him:
• IV fluids
• Anti-sickness meds
• Appetite stimulants
• Antivirals
• Pain relief
• Constant monitoring
• Love. So much love.

The whole team at Happy Paws went into full battle mode.
Everyone fought for Bobby in their own way — some with syringes, some with cuddles. 💚

And Bobby?
Bobby fought like a lion. 🦁

Even when he had nothing left, he kept trying.
And we kept trying with him.

🥹 His parents were devastated.

They had no idea this could happen to a vaccinated puppy.
They stood by him with courage and heartbreak, morning and night, never giving up hope.

And then…
One morning, he stood up.
He wagged his tail.
He ate a little.
He walked to the front of his kennel.

💥 He was back.

🏡 Today, Bobby is home.

No more drips.
No more tests.
Just zoomies, cuddles, and biscuits. 🍪

He went from almost gone to completely thriving.
And we couldn’t be more proud of him — or more thankful to his amazing family for trusting us with his life.

🙏 Bobby’s journey is a reminder that:
• Parvo can still strike — even in vaccinated dogs
• Early action saves lives
• And bravery comes in all shapes and wagging tails

Welcome back, Bobby.
You’ve broken our hearts and healed them all in one week.
Now go… chase butterflies. 🦋
