🐾 Billy’s Journey – Why Pre-Anaesthetic Bloods & IV Fluids Matter 🐾

This is Billy, our lovely 10-year-old miniature Dachshund, who recently came to us for a dental procedure.

The procedure itself went smoothly. However, the following day Billy became very unwell – he was lethargic, dehydrated, and experiencing vomiting and diarrhoea. When we admitted him back into hospital, blood tests revealed that he had developed a severe kidney and liver injury.

Fortunately, with intensive care and IV fluids, Billy made a wonderful recovery 💚 – and we couldn’t be happier to see him back on his paws!

👉 Why are we sharing this?
Before any anaesthetic, we always offer pre-anaesthetic blood tests and intravenous (IV) fluids. These are optional, but they provide an important safety net:

🧪 Blood tests can detect hidden issues with organs such as the kidneys or liver.

💧 IV fluids support vital organs, help maintain blood pressure, and aid recovery from anaesthesia.

Billy’s story is a great reminder of just how valuable these extra steps can be in keeping our pets safe and helping them bounce back quickly after procedures.

💔 From Fighting for His Life… to Chasing Butterflies Again 🐾✨

Bobby’s incredible comeback story 🐶❤️

Bobby is a 10-month-old Cocker Spaniel, full of life, joy, and mischief — just like any healthy, happy pup should be.

Until one day everything changed.
He suddenly became violently unwell — vomiting, lethargy, diarrhoea.
He wouldn’t eat. He wouldn’t move.
He was fading fast.

His worried parents rushed him to us at Happy Paws thinking maybe he’d eaten something naughty. A bit of scavenging, perhaps? A bad tummy?

We examined him and thought the same:
👉 “Maybe a foreign body… let’s investigate.”

But nothing prepared anyone for what came next.

🔬 He tested positive for parvovirus.
Yes — PARVO.
That devastating, often deadly virus that most of us only read about in textbooks.

💉 And Bobby was fully vaccinated.
Even so — parvovirus can still strike, rarely, brutally, and without warning.

🚨 For the next 8 days, Bobby was in intensive care.

We mean real intensive care.
Day and night. No breaks.
He had everything thrown at him:
• IV fluids
• Anti-sickness meds
• Appetite stimulants
• Antivirals
• Pain relief
• Constant monitoring
• Love. So much love.

The whole team at Happy Paws went into full battle mode.
Everyone fought for Bobby in their own way — some with syringes, some with cuddles. 💚

And Bobby?
Bobby fought like a lion. 🦁

Even when he had nothing left, he kept trying.
And we kept trying with him.

🥹 His parents were devastated.

They had no idea this could happen to a vaccinated puppy.
They stood by him with courage and heartbreak, morning and night, never giving up hope.

And then…
One morning, he stood up.
He wagged his tail.
He ate a little.
He walked to the front of his kennel.

💥 He was back.

🏡 Today, Bobby is home.

No more drips.
No more tests.
Just zoomies, cuddles, and biscuits. 🍪

He went from almost gone to completely thriving.
And we couldn’t be more proud of him — or more thankful to his amazing family for trusting us with his life.

🙏 Bobby’s journey is a reminder that:
• Parvo can still strike — even in vaccinated dogs
• Early action saves lives
• And bravery comes in all shapes and wagging tails

🩺💔 From Crisis to Comeback: Penny's Story 💖🐾

Two weeks ago, beautiful Penny was suddenly struck by mysterious and severe lethargy. Her mum, Lauren, knew something wasn’t right. Penny wasn't herself — weak, flat, and fading fast.

She reached out to an out-of-hours vet, but was told it was constipation and sent home with paracetamol and laxatives. But Penny continued to decline… and time was ticking.

❤️ That’s when a true friend stepped in. Lyndsey — thank you — pointed Lauren in our direction. Because of her, Penny arrived at Happy Paws Vets early that Sunday morning.

She was seriously unwell. Our team admitted her straight into our little hospital. We ran full diagnostics, gave her warmth, fluids, and comfort. And then… we had an answer. A tough one.

🧬 Addison’s Disease — a rare and life-threatening condition where the body can’t manage stress due to adrenal failure. It can mimic many other things… and it can be fatal if not caught in time.

🌟 But Penny? She’s a fighter.
And her mum, Lauren? Just as strong.

With the right treatment and round-the-clock care, Penny began to improve. Today, she came in for her follow-up — bright-eyed, tail wagging, and completely back to her beautiful, bouncy self! Her blood results are perfect. She’s thriving. 💪🐶

Penny's story reminds us:

✨ Always trust those who know your pet’s spirit.
✨ And never give up hope.

🌟 Exciting News at Happy Paws Vets! 🌟

We’re absolutely THRILLED to welcome the wonderful Claire to the Happy Paws family as our newest Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN)! 🩺🐾💚

Claire qualified in July 2022 and has been caring for pets in small animal practice ever since. 🐶🐱 Her journey into the veterinary world began with a work experience placement at Vets4Pets, where she discovered her true calling – and she hasn’t looked back! 🚀❤️

With her warm heart, gentle hands, and dedication to animal welfare, Claire brings so much passion and skill to our team. 🐾✨

When she’s not busy helping our furry patients feel better, she’s caring for her own little zoo at home – including:
🐴 Her lovely horse Marge
🐈‍⬛ Two cuddly cats
🐹 Three adorable guinea pigs

Puppy Love at Happy Paws!

We had a very special visit yesterday from a gorgeous litter of 8-week-old Cockapoo puppies — Bailey, Ken, Louie, Meeka, Nala, and Tucker — who came in for their first vaccinations!

Full of energy, tail wags, and mischief, these little ones certainly stole our hearts (and most of the treats too!). Each of them was incredibly brave and handled their visit like pros — it’s always a joy to welcome such well-socialised, happy pups who’ve clearly been raised with lots of love.

They’ve been brought up in a caring family environment, surrounded by children, and their lovely mum — who’s doing brilliantly — is still at home with them. Meeka will be staying with the breeder, so we’re sure we’ll see more of her soon!

Thank you to their breeder and family for trusting us with their care. We feel honoured to be part of their journey right from the beginning.

Bobs the Pug – A Miracle Wrapped in Wrinkles

🐾❤️🩺

This is Bobs, a lovely little pug with a huge heart… and until recently, a huge problem.

Bobs came to us critically unwell—struggling to urinate, very uncomfortable, and dangerously close to collapsing. Her family had been worried for weeks. Despite having been seen before, her condition had been misdiagnosed.

What we found shocked us all…
A massive bladder stone, larger than a golf ball 🪨, lodged painfully inside her bladder, causing infection and inflammation. Her white blood cell count was off the charts. She was septic, dehydrated, and fading fast.

But this little girl had no intention of giving up.

She spent 3 days in hospital with us, under close monitoring, IV fluids, pain relief, and emergency surgery to remove the stone. The odds weren’t great—but Bobs is a fighter.

And now... just look at her!
Bright, cheeky, full of life—and back to her normal self.
💪🐶✨

We are delighted, her family is overjoyed, and the whole team at Happy Paws Vets is so proud to have been part of her story.

🙏 Thank you to every member of our incredible staff who worked tirelessly to keep her alive—your compassion and skill made all the difference.

This story is not about blame—veterinary medicine is complex. But it’s a reminder to every pet owner:

Yesterday, we took a HUGE step in ensuring a healthy, happy life for our adorable French Bulldog puppies! 🩺💉 It was vaccination day for our little princesses: Snow White, Ursula, Tiana, and Moana! 👑🐾

They were absolute superstars—brave, curious, and of course, extra cuddly after their first shots! 🥰🐶 Nothing is more important than giving them the best start in life, and we’re so excited to watch them grow into strong, happy, and playful companions! 💕🐾
