I’ve always had a passion for animals, especially dogs and horses. In 2016 I decided to turn this passion into a career and trained as a dog groomer at Furst Class Lounge in Chesterfield. The training was very intensive and very thorough, with a huge focus on the dog’s welfare and extremely high standards of grooms. Once I had passed my exams (achieving my City and Guilds and going on to do a canine first aid course) I was in two minds whether to set up my own business at home or work for a salon.
I liked the idea of a more personal touch and a calmer environment for the dogs and, with my own pack of 4 dogs at the time, I decided to set up at home so that I could be a bit more flexible during the day to meet their needs as well. I think they all wondered why “mum” smelt of other dogs and why I was talking “doggie” in the garage all day! By now my lovely family and a fab team of builders had converted my garage into a gorgeous little bijou grooming studio.
Hair and Hounds Grooming Studio was up and running by September 2017 with a strong ethos of kindness and patience which I hope still shines through today. I work alone and my studio is small which means dogs are groomed on a one to one basis and have my full attention while they are with me. Noise and stress is kept to a minimum and all dogs that come are allowed breaks to have a stretch and a toilet break. I try not to rush or force dogs so that they have a more positive experience. This sometimes means grooming at my studio takes a little longer than you may expect.
I now have lots of lovely regulars who come to the studio on a frequent basis. Dogs of varying sizes - some are older dogs, some with the odd issue that we are working on and some I have done since they were puppies. In the last two years I have got to really know some wonderful dogs and their owners.
