⭐️ Star of the Month ⭐️

Missy is our star of August! She came in to us out-of-hours when she started vomiting and not wanting to eat or drink. She didn’t get any better with symptomatic medication and her tummy became more uncomfortable. An X-ray and ultrasound scan showed that she had lots of gas building up within her intestines. Vet Emma performed an operation to examine her tummy which showed that she had an intussusception. This is a severe condition when the intestine goes inside itself and causes a blockage. Emma removed 10cm of the unhealthy intestines and stitched her back together. Missy has made a full recovery and is loving being back outside again!

🦷 The importance of dental checks!! 🦷

Does your pet have a smelly breath? Or have you noticed lots of brown plaque build up onto their teeth?Dental hygiene is extremely important for our dogs and cats. Build up of plaque can lead to severe pain, inability to eat and chew properly, and can lead to severe infections of the jaw bone if not treated.

This little dog had severe dental disease and was booked for a Stage 1 dental. The first photo shows before scaling (cleaning), and the second photo shows afterwards. Scaling can be a sore procedure and is always performed under anaesthetic with pain relief. In this case, the plaque had caused the gums to recede which had exposed the roots of the teeth. All of the teeth were also x-rayed to determine if the roots were healthy. This dog came back at a later date a few weeks later to have a Stage 2 with the necessary teeth extracted. He’s feeling much happier again now!

If you are concerned about your pets teeth, please contact us to book a FREE dental health check!

⭐️ Star of the Month ⭐️

Our star of July is the lovely Lily who came into Looe when she started vomiting multiple times. Vet Jenny examined her and felt something firm in her tummy. An ultrasound scan showed shadowing within her intestines. She went up to Callington for further investigations.

An x-ray at Callington under sedation showed the presence of a large white object within her tummy. Vet Anna then performed an operation to examine her abdomen which revealed a large stone stuck in her intestines. An incision was made to remove the stone, and then multiple intricate stitches were placed to close the incision. Lily made a very quick recovery from the anaesthetic and went home the following morning. She has made a full recovery - but please don't eat any more stones in future Lily!!

While the air temperature might seem bearable, remember that the pavement can be scorching hot for our furry friends' paws.... ☀😎

If you can't hold the back of your hand to the pavement for 5-7 seconds, it's too hot for your dog's delicate paws. Opt for walks during cooler times of the day and stick to grassy areas where possible.

Summer can present certain hazards for our four legged friends. Here is a list of Ten Summer Hazards to be aware of during the warmer months and some tips to keep your pet safe ☀️🐾

1) Heatstroke - To avoid heatstroke, give your pet plenty of shade and water to drink, take for walks during the cooler times in the day. Keep fur shorter during warmer months. Adding a fan to your home can keep them confortable inside, along with coolmats also.
Never leave a pet in the car on a hot day.
2) Hot pavements and artificial grass - Try the seven-second rule; if you can place the back of your hand on the surface for seven seconds or more, then it’s safe for your pet to walk on. If your hand gets too hot, it’s too hot for your pet.
3) Ticks - Commonly found in woodland & grassland. We can help remove Ticks from your pet if you are not comfortable to do so yourself.
4) Sunburn - Fur protects most pets from the sun, but any bald patches, or areas of exposed skin is at risk of burning. Make sure you protect your pet with a pet-safe sunscreen, paying attention to any exposed skin on their ears, nose, tummy and legs. Provide access to shady areas also.
5) Insect bites, Stings & Flystrike - The site of a sting or bite might become swollen and itchy. Common symptoms of a more severe sting include: Drooling, Whining, Swelling, Pawing at the face, or mouth, biting at the site of the sting, holding up their stung paw, Hives. Act quickly if you notice swelling of the tongue or throat, or if you notice any trouble with breathing.
6) Snake Bites - Two out of the three species of snake in the UK are non-venomous, but Adders are venomous, which means their bite can cause serious illness – if your pet is bitten you should seek veterinary care immediately. Try and keep your pet away from entering shrub and bushes, be vigilant in open areas where Adders could be basking in the sun.
7) Swimming & Blue-green algae - Not all dogs are good swimmers so be cautious near open water, especially deep water with strong currents. Floatation devices such as life jackets for dogs are a good way to get your pet comfortable with the water. Make sure to rinse your pet's fur after a dip. Blue-green algae is a dangerous bacteria that grows in stagnant water during warm weather. Avoid letting your pet swim in or drink from potentially contaminated water. Contact the vet immediately you think your pet has been in contact.
8) Plants & Flowers - Many plants and flowers are toxic if eaten by our pets. Depending on the plant, your pet might develop a range of symptoms from an upset stomach to more serious conditions such as kidney failure. Be observant and try to keep your pet away from flower beds, contact the vets if you are concerned.
9) Fertiliser and pesticides - if living near farmland, take note of when a farmer sprays their fields. Take a different route for a few days and make sure to clean your pet's paws once home. Symptoms of fertiliser toxicity include: diarrhoea, vomiting, drooling and a painful abdomen. Pesticides can cause muscle tremors and even seizures.
10) Barbecues and No No foods - food and drink that should be kept out of reach of your pet include: Food containing bones, seeds, Grapes, Raw garlic & onion, Raisins, Corn on the cob, Chocolate, Beer, Wine, Coffee/coffee beans & Tea bags.

☀ Sheds, Greenhouses, Summerhouses ☀

During the hotter months, cats can find their way into a nice and cosy area like sheds and greenhouses. However, they can become trapped, too warm and then dehydrated. Please always check these places for unexpected visitors before locking them up!

Friendly reminder!! 🪱🦟🐈‍⬛🐕🐾

For anyone wanting to buy prescription flea and worm treatment, we legally have to have seen your pet within the last 12 months and have written a prescription to be able to dispense this for your pets. This is a free appointment; a check is also required if you wish to change flea or worm product. This is the RCVS guidance on prescribing prescription only medicines throughout the UK. Please remember to also allow at least 48 working hours from ordering medication to collection.

Here is a photo of Felix who recently came to have a check over and was prescribed some routine flea and worm treatment!

Kiwi the black capped cappucin had been very quiet and wasn’t eating properly. Vet Jenny and nurse Tina anaesthetised Kiwi to fully examine her and found that one of her teeth was very inflamed and had some discharge surrounding it. Dental X-rays were taken of her mouth which showed that the tooth root is healthy and that extraction wasn’t required at this stage. Thorough cleaning of this area was carried out. Kiwi woke up from her anaesthetic smoothly and is now recovering well and her appetite is much better!

🦷 Did you know periodontal disease is one of the most prevalent dental issues affecting our pets?🦷

It starts with plaque and tartar build up, leading to inflammation of the gums and potential damage to teeth and supporting structures. Recognising early signs like bad breath, red gums, or difficulty eating is crucial for timely intervention.

Regular dental check-ups, full mouth assessment and cleanings with your vet are essential for preventing and managing periodontal disease, ensuring your pet's dental health is in tip-top shape.

If you have concerns about your pet's dental health, don't hesitate to reach out to our team for guidance and support. We offer FREE dental checks!!

⭐️ Star of the Month ⭐️

Luna is our star of June! Luna developed a very swollen face after walking at Kit Hill on a sunny evening and was brought in immediately out-of-hours. On call vet Mandy suspected an adder bite given the history and noticing a large amount of oedema (swelling) around her lip which was spreading towards her throat.

Luna was given pain relief, started on a drip and then received antivenom through her vein. With close monitoring throughout the night from night nurse Hannah, Luna became more comfortable and the swelling stopped spreading. Luckily Luna is making a good recovery and the swelling is gradually reducing.

Please be very careful with your pets during the hot weather in moorland/long grass areas. This was our second adder bite case within a week; luckily both have recovered 🐍

🐰 It's the Final Day of Rabbit Awareness Week! 🐰

Today we are focussing on companionship:
🐰 It's important that rabbits live with at least one other rabbit at all times, so that they feel safe. As they're social animals, they also enjoy eating together, grooming each other and lying down together to keep each other warm.
🐰 If you have a single rabbit, it's never too late for them to bond with another rabbit. The bonding process is very important and must be taken slowly with lots of supervision
🐰 Positive bonding behaviour includes grooming, resting or sleeping next to each other and eating side by side
🐰 Concerning bonding behaviour includes continuous, fast circling (this might lead to a fight), excessive mounting or chasing, boxing (when both rabbits stand on their back legs ‘boxing’ each other), lunging forward, grunting or ears flattened, and excessive fur pulling
🐰 Rabbits should never be split up once bonded. They should always travel in the same carrier. If one rabbit needs to go to the vet, make sure that the other one can accompany them.

🐰 The 4th day of Rabbit Awareness Week 🐰

Today we are focusing on our rabbits environment:
🐰 Enclosure - your rabbits’ shelter should be permanently attached to a large run which is safe and predator proof, so they can exercise freely. The shelter itself should be as big as possible but at an absolute minimum L2m x W0.6mx H0.6m, this is so that they can take 3 hops and stretch fully upright. Their full enclosure should be at least L3m x W2m x H1m.
🐰 Avoid hazards! Rabbits love to chew so make sure they can’t access any cables or wires if they live or ever come indoors. Always make sure your rabbits aren’t left unattended when free roaming the house.
🐰 Plants - some common plants (especially but not limited to bulb grown plants) can be toxic to rabbits. House plants should be kept high up and in a separate room to your rabbits if they live or come indoors.
🐰 Escaping - check that your rabbits housing is escape and predator proofed, bunnies can get through surprisingly small gaps and they can dig holes to escape very quickly!
🐰 Enrichment - ensure that rabbits have ad lib hay, and also have lots of different areas to explore

Dottie the Dachshund came into us yesterday when she was struggling to give birth. She had delivered 3 puppies at home but was very tired and unable to give birth naturally anymore. Injections to try and stimulate her contractions were unsuccessful so we had to perform a Caesarean section. She went straight into theatre and one more puppy was born alive! Luckily Dottie recovered well from the surgery and is at home getting to know her new puppies 🥰
