Chesvale Dog Training Club

Chesvale Dog Training Club The club exists for two main reasons.
(4)

Firstly to help people train and socialise their dogs to a standard where they are well behaved and obedient to their owner’s commands. An obedient dog is a delight to its owner and shows the general public that dogs need not be the nuisance that they perceive them to be. Secondly as a meeting place where those who are interested in training their dogs to the higher standard required for obedience competitions can practice and receive guidance and advice.

As you know, Chesvale is a not for profit club, so we are able to donate to charity from any surplus that we make. We have supported a number of dog rescues over the years and this year we decided to make a Christmas donation of £5,000 to Hope Rescue who are facing a tough Christmas with increased running costs, the crisis of the number of dogs needing rescue spaces, and the fall out from imminent the XL Bully ban. They have chosen to use the funds as a 'match pot' to raise another £5,000 so our donation will end up providing Hope Rescue with £10,000 of much needed funds😃We are always happy to hear from our members about charities they would like the club to support so do let the Committee know.

TODAY IS GIVING TUESDAY

is the global day of giving.

It also sees the start of our Cosy Christmas appeal which aims to give all our rescue dogs a wonderful time this Christmas. 🥰

With your help, we can make the festive period as special as possible for the dogs in our care because every dog deserves Christmas.

Your donations will help to keep our kennels warm and cosy, and help to provide delicious treats and scrummy dinners.

You will also help to keep the dogs healthy and happy whilst they wait for the ultimate gift, their forever home.

Thanks to our wonderful friends at Chesvale Dog Training Club, your donations will be doubled up to the first £5,000 in match funding.

You can make your festive donations in the following ways:

As we have no club this week (2nd November) here's some advice to keep your dogs safe over the firework season. For those whose puppies are experiencing fireworks for the first time, it's best to stay home with them in the evenings, if you can, so you can observe how they react. Chesvale's Advice Sheet is in the comments.

As we approach Halloween, just a reminder that it can be an unsettling time for our dogs. If you are expecting Trick or Treaters, perhaps put your dog in another room with plenty of things to keep them occupied so they don't get overexcited by the constant ringing of the doorbell and opening of the door. It also avoids the risk of them running out or jumping up at visitors. Also remember that they can get spooked by people dressed up in strange costumes, strange noises and odd decorations in the house. Finally keep all the sweet treats away from your dogs and eat them yourselves! Happy and Safe Halloween 🎃🎃🎃

SHOW MANAGER’S REPORT
70th ANNIVERSARY

Twice every year I sit down to write a report about the show and to be honest they all seem to be the same. Therefore, I am changing the format as follows:

Thank you - Team Chesvale for all your hard work, raking rings, putting up ropes, erecting tents, manning the car park, producing the magnificent lunch and afternoon tea and then clearing everything away after two long days.
Thank you - Judges and stewards for giving up your time to support us.
Thank you - Competitors, entering the show and leaving the venue clean.
Thank you - Yumove for the fantastic prizes.
Thank you - Laura Wiley and Sheila Rodger for manning the training ring.
Extra Special
Thank you - Clare Williams, show secretary. Couldn’t do it without you!

Job done!

CHESVALE DOG TRAINING CLUB
OPEN SHOW SUNDAY 7th MAY 2023

The Chesvale Committee were adamant in making this show special as it is the Clubs 70th Anniversary. Therefore, everyone on arrival were presented with a pen and our judges and stewards were given gifts to mark how special this year is for the club. It was interesting that a few of the competitors were still using their pens from our 60th anniversary!

The Team arrived on Saturday afternoon in pouring rain, armed with grass blowers and mowers to ensure all the rings were clear of any lose grass clippings, setting up the rings and club house. They all turned up early on Sunday morning to assist with ‘tent erection’ and generally working like little beavers all day to make such a wonderful day for everyone. Not only our members but also husbands mucked in with whatever needed doing and then staying to clear away at the end of the day. How lucky we were with the weather on show day, slightly misty in the morning but beautiful sunshine appeared later.

With twelve rings we were fortunate that we only had to find 2 stewards and I would like to thank Maggie Moran and Chris Skelly for giving up the opportunity to work their dogs to fill these positions. I had to find 6 people who could do sums and colouring in for the scoreboards and Chesvale members and friends of the club stepped in to cover these jobs, even though some had never done it before and then doing decoy steward duties!

We were incredibly lucky to have two sponsors for the show this year. JR Pet Product generously supplied prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each class. YuMove sponsored our beautiful rosettes, prize cards for all twelve classes and donated product subscription for the first three places in each class. So, an enormous thank you to JR Pet Products and YuMove for their support and generous donation, this makes an enormous difference to the show.

We had two training rings, one manned by Laura Wiley and the second a self-help or ‘bring a friend’ ring. Sheila Rodger was in control of the list of people waiting to have a go as well as the money. They worked so hard all-day helping people practice and raised £135.40. Laura also managed to get a 5th place in B in between helping everyone! I know everyone appreciates the opportunity to train in a show environment under an experienced handler, so many thanks go to the team for their time and support. The tombola was run by our Vice-President, Maggie Petit and made a fantastic £135.00. This means that £271.00 will be going to the British Heart Foundation.

Chesvale catering is well known for being fantastic, but Gail Nokes, Pauline Finn, Lynne Weston, Julie Green and Stephanie Mayne went to a new level with super decorations in the club colours of blue, gold and white balloons which were weighted with silver covered dumbbells! The food did not disappoint, and the desserts were superb. Jo Dyas and Sally Partridge took over for the afternoon tea and beautiful home-made cakes with a centrepiece special 70th Anniversary celebration cake made by Julie Green. Many of the judges also took away cake for their journey home! Our new competitor caterers (Debs) were great, it was their first dog show and will be back again next year, great food at reasonable prices.

I cannot thank all our members individually in this post as there were over 30 of them! However, I must mention Clare Williams, our Show Secretary, without whom the show could not operate. The rest of our members know how grateful I am for their help and support.

Finally, to all the competitors who attended - we hope you had an enjoyable day and thank you for all the lovely comments and expressions of thanks for putting on a show. A little thanks goes a long way.

Our next show is on Sunday 27th August, pre-beginner, beginner and novice only, so look out for the schedule which will be available shortly. Also put next year’s May show date in your diary, Sunday 5th May 2024.

So sad to have lost Paul O'Grady, a much loved presenter, comedian and all round animal welfare advocate. He had a genuine love of dogs and was an ambassador for Battersea Dogs and Cats Home and StreetVet. He never missed an opportunity to support and promote rescue dogs and also took a few home!

Chesvale sends their condolences to his family and close friends, both two and four legged.
