Aside from preventing unplanned pregnancy and behaviours associated with hormonal fluctuations, there are a number of health benefits to neutering your dog. The procedure is routine and your dog will normally be home within a few hours.

Neutering is an operation to remove the testicles or ovaries from a dog. Read our vets advice on neutering your dog, and the benefits and risks if doing so.

Fact Friday: Do you notice that your dog seems to know when you are happy or sad and knows when to comfort you? An experiment conducted a few years ago showed that dogs can understand both dog and human emotions based on facial expressions, body language and vocalizations. Clever pups 🐶

A recent study reveals dogs are more intuitive than we thought.

Fun fact Friday: Dogs are social animals, using a wide range of facial expressions and body language to communicate how they feel and what their intentions are. Solitary animals like tortoises or snakes don’t need to communicate as much so they have far fewer expressions. Perhaps that’s why dogs are the UKs most popular pet - because we are social animals too. In fact 29% of UK households have one.

Today I met this lovely mature little lady who is completely blind and unsurprisingly very nervous with new visitors. Talking to a blind dog before you touch them lets them know where you are so that you don’t scare or startle them. She soon settled down and enjoyed a bum scratch 🐶

Lola can get very over excited when we get ready to go for a walk and can be reactive when she sees other dogs if she is over stimulated. I always put her harness and lead on and take my time leaving the house so she’s as calm as possible when we do. Just taking an extra few minutes a day to do this has made a huge difference 😊

Owning a pet is scientifically proven to be good for your mental health. Not that I needed any excuse to add more pets to my collection ❤️

Did you know that scientific studies have proven that owning a pet can be good for your mental health? 🐾

Pets give us something positive to focus our mind and energy on. The responsibility of caring for a pet can provide a clear, positive focus, even when life may seem a bit grey. Our pets are also great for helping us to meet new people, leaving us feeling a little less lonely and vulnerable! 🥰

But it's also important to remember that this may not always be the case if your lifestyle and circumstances don't support pet ownership.

We want to say thank you to all of the four-pawed support systems that make no judgements and are there for us no matter what.

For , drop a comment below and let us know how having a pet helps you feel mentally healthier! ❤️

Fun Fact Friday: Dogs' noses aren't just incredibly cute and boop-able, they are powerful smelling machines. The right nostril leads to the right side of the dog's brain, analysing arousal, unfamiliar odours, new and threatening odours. The left nostril leads to the left side of the dog's brain analysing familiar odours including food and familiar threatening odours. Fascinating stuff!

Behaviour Assessment tree

Addressing the Root Causes of Canine Behaviour. 🐶

When addressing canine behaviour, it's essential to dig deep and understand the underlying causes, not just the symptoms. 🐾

It's like nurturing a plant; if we only water the surface, we won't see much growth. 🌱

Behaviour, especially problematic behaviour, isn't just random. It's a signal of something deeper. 🤔

The Behaviour Assessment tool is a straightforward tool designed to stimulate our thought process to help us identify potential underlying causes of observed behaviours.

Let's understand our dogs' needs and root causes to give them the support they deserve. 🐕❤️

Nobody tells you how quickly dogs age. How one day you wake up and suddenly their face is all white. Or how their eyes start to seem more milky than before, or how you have to call their name a few more times than you used to. Everyone says not to blink if you have children or you'll miss out. But what about the dog that was there with you before your children were even thought of?
The dog that was by your side before you even found love. Nobody tells you to cherish every moment you have with them.... Cherish the dog. The one that's been there by your side through every breakup followed you as you bounced from home to home. The one that sleeps in your bed and keeps you from feeling lonely. Cherish him because one day you'll take him on a walk and he'll get tired before you and you'll realize just how many years he's Been walking beside you...

Every year, we see posts circulating on social media about rapeseed being extremely dangerous for dogs ⚠️

This understandably worries many dog owners. Many posts advise that even walking through a rapeseed field with a dog can cause burn-like skin abrasions and other serious issues.

Thankfully, these extreme reactions are rare, and although some dogs may react like this if they're particularly sensitive to the plants, the vast majority of dogs will not suffer ill effects from walking through a rapeseed field 🐕

However, we wouldn't advise allowing dogs to eat the plant, as it can cause upset tummies if ingested.

Please do not panic if your dog has been in recent contact with rapeseed, but if your pet is experiencing any unusual symptoms, we would always advise you to get in touch with your vet.

Retractable/extendable leads can be dangerous with the thin lead/cable easily getting tangled around dogs or humans causing injury. They also make it harder to teach loose lead walking as the dog learns to pull to release the line. Just this week I saw a reactive dog pull so hard towards another dog that the lock on the leash snapped and the owner could not pull him back in. Luckily the other dog managed to escape but it could have been a very different story.

Should I use a retractable lead? Retractable, or extendable leads are those thin lines which wind in and out of the box container you hold. You can lock them or allow your dog to pull more line as they go. They are different to long lines (which we discuss in our blog here) which

Building a good relationship with your dog is the key to a happy and relaxed companion. Too much attention and giving in to their demands can create behavioural problems and lead to the dog becoming stressed when separated from their human.
