With the long periods of darkness and cold wet weather it can often be difficult to get our pets exercised!
However, there are plenty of exercises we can do with them at home 🏠
💈 Cavaletti poles are a great exercise to increase muscle mass, aid in joint range of motion and proprioception
Starting on the ground Cavaletti poles can be raised up to increase the difficulty!
👨👩👧👦 These are such a fun exercise to do with your pet and great for getting the whole family involved

This is Joey, he had his femoral head removed just over 5 weeks ago and look at him go!
Here is Joey doing his rehabilitation exercise to help build up his strength to support his 'false' hip joint 🦴

Today, more than 700,000 human deaths per year can be attributed to Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).
By 2050, both the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nations have predicted this to increase to 10 million deaths per year.
Antibiotics are essential to treat many serious bacterial infections in both humans and animals but AMR is increasing rapidly due to misuse and overuse of antibiotics in both human and veterinary medicine. Inappropriate disposal of unused antibiotics also damages the environment, impacting water quality and wildlife.
This November, The Wheelhouse Veterinary Centre, lead by out fantastic vet Hannah, are joining in with the Antibiotic Amnesty Campaign 2023 to encourage all of our responsible pet owners to return any unused or out of date to us to dispose of adequately.

Our recent #musclemonday💪 posts have been focusing on canine patients, but our feline friends also so through the same assessment process:
1. Static
2. Dynamic
3. Joints
4. Soft tissue
🐈 For the Dynamic assessment we get our cats to walk around the consult room.
This is great way to allow us to examine how they are moving and for them to explore and familiarise themselves with the environment before commencing treatment 😸
Our cats really enjoy coming in for Physiotherapy and Laser Therapy and quite often have a snooze!💤

The final step on our assessment process is looking at the muscles and soft tissues.
This video shows how we carry out an assessment of all the muscles 💪
During the muscle assessment we are feeling for:
- Atrophy otherwise known as muscle loss
- Trigger points / areas of pain
- Heat ♨️
- Swelling or oedema
- Hypertonicity ⬆️ (increased tone)
- Hypotonicity ⬇️ (decreased tone)
Similar to the joint assessment we are looking at both the left and right sides and comparing these two.
Muscle tension is a great way of identifying areas that your pet might be compensating.
We hope you find this video informative.

The third step on our assessment process is the joints.
This video explains how we carry out an assessment of all the joints and what we are feeling for at each step.

For the month of July we will be focusing on our Physiotherapy assessment process. Each week we will explain the different stages of assessment we perform before carrying out our Physiotherapy treatments.
🗒️The Assessment process is broken down into 4 main stages
1. Dynamic
2. Static
3. Joints
4. Soft tissue
🐕Dynamic Assessment is the the first step.
This is where we observe your pet walking and trotting to identify areas of abnormality such as…
- Foot placement wide or narrow 🐾
- Lameness and any associated head nod
- Limb deviations
- Head/ Tail carriage 🐩
As seen in the videos below the dog on the left has a much wider placement of his hind feet compared to the dog on the right whole places her feet under her hips.
🔈All observations are explained at the end of the assessment process and the recommended treatments are discussed
☎️Following this we then move on to perform our other assessments check back for next week for more information

💕 This little cutie pie is Dandelion. Vet Stephanie saw Dandelion back at the start of December due to a lump that Dandelion had.
Steph took Dandelion into surgery to safely remove the lump.
We are pleased to report that Dandelion recovered really well and with her wonderful owners help and care post operation, she was signed off by Steph last week, just in time for Christmas! 🎉
