⚖By keeping your pet an ideal body weight these forces are reduced.
If you need help or advise in how to maintain your pets bodyweight and find the correct diet for them, please book a complementary nurse clinic with a member of our team 🩺

🐶 Stroma is a lovely cockerpoo who came to see vet Alice in February after her owner noticed a wound on her right back leg after a walk. Alice recommended assessing the wound under sedation to give it a good clean and to assess any damage. The wound was much deeper than expected and Stroma had damaged part of her patella tendon. 🦴
💉There was a lot of mud and debris present around the wound so it was flushed with sterile saline and given a very thorough clean. Vet Chris came to assist vet Katie in repairing the tendon. Stroma recovered well from the procedure but faced a long rehab programme as tendons take weeks to heal.

⭐️ She has been a star pupil with physio Sophie and Catherine. After 6 weeks of strict rest and physio she gradually started to do more exercise.

🏆We are pleased to report she has made a full recovery and is back running around happily! A huge amount of credit must go to Stroma's owner who has been very dedicated to her recovery. 💪

💪 This week its Emmas turn

🎓Emma qualified from Oaklands college in 2017 after completing a diploma in veterinary nursing and has since worked in various practice including referral and teaching hospitals, and most recently joining us at the wheelhouse in 2022.

🩺 In her previous job she developed a love for inpatient care, especially medical nursing and she especially enjoys looking after patients with endocrine disease and supporting their owners. 📚Emma is currently completing a certificate in medical nursing which will help her provide even more care to these special patients.

Shortly after qualifying Emma completed the ISFM (international society of feline medicine) certificate in feline nursing, and achieved distinction. She loves all animals but definitely has a soft spot for the cats. 🐈

At home Emma has 2 cats, a 7 year old domestic shorthair named Sadie and a 6 year old Ragdoll named Oliver who are pictured below.

Just reminder that from the 10th June 2024 it will be a legal requirement for any kitten/ cat over the ages of 20 weeks to old be MICROCHIPPED!!
This is now only 3 WEEKS AWAY!
Thousands of dogs and cats go missing each year in the UK and many are never reunited with their owners as they have no permanent identification. Microchipping is the safest way to ensure that pets can be reunited with their owners as quickly as possible.
There are over 11 million pet cats in England, with at least 2.3 million without a microchip (GOV.UK) meaning that it would be very difficult to reunite them with their owner if they become lost or stolen.
Microchipping a much safer and more reliable method of identification than using collars which can sometimes fall off or become too tight and can cause injuries.

☎Please book your cats microchip appointment

This 💪 its Becca's turn aka our rabbit expert! 🐇

Becca has completed an advanced programme in veterinary nursing of small mammals (APVN (Small Mammal) and she has a keen interest in small mammals.
Over the years she has had many pets that include rabbits, chickens, gerbils, hamsters all of which stemmed her interest in small mammals! 🐣

Before joining the Wheelhouse she worked at two exotic referral practices which gave her an amazing insight into the nursing of weird and wonderful species such as raptors, emus, goats, penguins, small reptiles, crocodiles, possums and skunks to name a few...🐍

Becca's been vital in helping Wheelhouse develop their care for rabbits that come in to see us! She has helped to develop an effective pain scoring system to ensure we are providing the best care for our rabbit patients🐰

She has recently completed her ILM Level 3 Certificate in Leadership and Management with the aim to support her in her role as deputy head nurse enabling her to support the nursing team in their daily tasks and be a support to the head nurse. 🎓

Above are some photos of Becca's lovely rabbits!

⚠Trigger Warning: Gore!⚠

This is Scooby, who came in to see vet Steph back in February because his groomer had noticed a lump on his leg which sadly turned out to be a soft tissue sarcoma. These can be very aggressive tumour, and can require radical surgery to cure them.
Luckily Scooby's tumour was low grade, so we agreed just to remove the tumour, rather than his whole leg!

Because there isn't a lot of spare skin on limbs, and the tumour was quite big, it was very difficult for Steph to fully close the wound at the time of the operation, and Scooby suffered from wound breakdown - the skin popping open.

Sadly Scooby then got a very nasty infection which was resistant to a lot of antibiotics. The wound - and the infection - were managed with regular bandaging and flushing rather than antibiotics and we are pleased to report that 7 weeks after the operation he has finally been signed off to start running around again.

There is, sadly, still a chance that the tumour will come back, but for now Scooby gets to enjoy running around on all four paws 🙂
It's amazing what infections can be healed without the need for any antibiotics!!

Meet Stephanie ⭐

Stephanie qualified from Middlesex University in 2019, she has been to a couple of practices since qualifying before joining the Wheelhouse. She has had some experience with exotics which has broadened her knowledge greatly 🐍

She found her passion in theatre where she enjoys every aspect including; anaesthetics, scrubbing in and assisting with surgery. She is currently working towards completing a certificate in Surgical Nursing, with the aim that in the future she will look to complete surgery under Schedule 3. 🎓
Steph said the certificate has enabled her to be more confident doing anaesthetics for bigger surgeries. She also says that it has helped her understand how to monitor her patients pain levels and provide analgesia pre, during and post-op.

Stephanie is part of the Endoscope team🩺 , which gives her an opportunity to work with a range of interesting cases, and being able to help animals with minimally invasive surgery.
She has also recently become a part of the chemotherapy team, helping to support animals through their treatments.💉
She is also a clinical coach and enjoys teaching the next generation of Registered Veterinary Nurses.

In her free time when she isn’t working or working on her certificate she likes to play video games, watch horror films and occasionally a bit of baking. She is also hoping to be able to do some more travelling!🌍

According to studies 1 in 6 people are affected by mental health problems every week but we may not realise who of those we know are affected. 🌍
Please take the time to check in with others to show you care❤

🌟Golden boy 🌟
Moose came to see us back in October for investigations and was sadly diagnosed with re**al lymphoma via a colonoscopy by Vet Penny. Fortunately re**al lymphoma is a type of cancer that responds very well to chemotherapy.
Penny and nurse Steph have been treating Moose with a 6 month chemotherapy course and he is now in remission!
He has been a pleasure to treat, always loving cuddles and tummy rubs as you can see ❤
Congratulations Moose!

Well done Raven and her family ♥

This its Vicky's turn ⭐

Vick joined the Wheelhouse in 2003 as a Receptionist after having worked for 2 years at a local hotel and swiftly moved into the Head Receptionist role soon after. Vicky then went to s part-time role when she had her two children. Prior to this, Vicky completed Level 2 NVQ in Customer Service.

As the role of Head Receptionist evolved, Wheelhouse developed the role of Client Care Manager which Vicky was successful in filling, which then lead her to becoming Practice Director. During Covid the job role then developed into becoming the Practise Manager.
Vicky says "I've always loved working within a team and the interaction with clients and their pets."
Throughout her time here Vicky took every opportunity to attend training courses and to learn more about how to coach team members and improve her skills.
In more recent years since merging with IVC Vicky became Business Support Manager. In 2022 IVC Evidensia created a new project which lead to her current role as Area Support Manager where she gets to support & help develop 7 wonderful practices, including the Wheelhouse 🙂
