WE REINVENTED THE WHEEL! โ NO WE ABSOLUTLEY DID NOT!!!!! โ KARIN LEE โ AT TIMES INADEQUATE DOG HANDLER
We are sure that we did not found a new training method for Trailing. As a matter of fact nobody in this century did when it comes to Mantrailing.
Actually there are records available that one of the first real attempts been made to use dogs to aid the police in the detection of crime and the apprehension of a criminal was in 1888 occurred when two privately owned Bloodhounds, Barnaby and Burgh, were used in a simple tracking test set up by then the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Sir Charles Warren, with a view of using them in the hunt for the Victorian murderer, Jack the Ripper. The results were far from satisfactory, with one o the hounds biting the Commissioner and both dogs later running off, requiring the police search to find them.( K9 Cops โ Police Dogs of the World, Nigel Allsopp). The same story is told slightly different in another book, where it says the dogs where quiet good after a couple of โrehearsalsโ in St James Park, where they acquitted themselves to the satisfaction of the Chief Commissioner of Police; but it may be said, that, though repeatedly the line of scent was crossed by a strange foot, without throwing off the hound, when the same was done in the streets an on the pavement hound were quite a fault. Indeed, to be useful in tracking criminals in a town very special training would be needed, and personally, it was believed that bloodhounds, even with that training, would be useless in large centers for police purposes. (The Bloodhound- The Dog Anthology) The book then carries on to describe how breeding and specialist training can improve the performance.
You see, its not new and people who try to call it something different, or make others believe they invented a new way of training Trailing are not really honest and maybe should consider, rather claiming such things, to honor the dog trainers and handlers of the past who left us such great heritage to draw from. The method how to get a dog to trail human scent, which most not naturally do, is centuries old.
It boils in my view down to two things, a great dog that is willing to trail and lives for hunting people and time to train and nurture the dogs abilities. Other important aspects are the handler letting himself into a really deep working relationship with his dog and appreciate this magnificent individual in its own right.
If you are lucky enough to have such dog in your life; managed to get this magical working relationship, you can feel coming up your trailing lead, cherish what you have got and be the handler this dog deserves.
See you soon
