The Hale Veterinary Group veterinary hospital, based in Chippenham, provides veterinary services beyond those usually available in smaller 'GP-style' practices. The hospital is also the base for all our inpatients that receive the wonderful care and attention from our nursing team during the day and the Vets Now team at night providing true 24hr inpatient care. Our Chippenham waiting room is air-c

onditioned, has a separate 'Cat Corner', free Wi-Fi access while you wait and tea/coffee available on request.

Blaze enjoyed his trip to see our out of hours team so much earlier this year, with an abdominal foreign body, that he was back again last month, this time with an eye injury.

Blaze had been a typical spaniel earlier that day, running in and out of the bushes and undergrowth. On returning from his walk his owner noticed Blaze was rubbing his eye so called our out of hours team. Pam was on duty and happily saw him again, she was pleased to see him fully recovered from his earlier surgery. Thankfully after close inspection of his eye, no foreign objects or damage to the eye was found. He went home with some pain killers and eye drops to help ease the irritation.

Should your pet need to be seen overnight, the night team this week is Alison P and Lindy. They shall be awake with our inpatients and available to speak to or see your pet throughout the night if you have any concerns.

Here's is a little about Alison P and Lindy:

Alison (Vet) joined the Nightingale team in October 2023. Before this Alison was part of another night team. In 2023 Alison completed an Advanced Certificate in Emergency and Critical Care.

Lindy (Registered Veterinary Nurse) joined Nightingale at its opening in 2023 and has an interest in emergency care and rehabilitation. Lindy previously worked as a qualified canine hydrotherapist and still hopes to develop her knowledge in physiotherapy in the future.
Her favourite part of being a Veterinary Nurse is seeing the changes she can make to the patient with nursing care, and treating every pet as if they were her own.
Lindy’s own pets include Elsa, a rescue dog who was born blind and deaf and Mort, an Eclectus parrot. She enjoys reading, painting and horse riding in her spare time and volunteers for a chicken rescue, rehoming ex-battery hens whenever she can. See less

Do you have any leftover antibiotics you need to dispose of? 💊

Antibiotics shouldn’t be placed in household waste or flushed down the toilet due to the risk of antibiotic resistance in bacteria living in animals, plants and the soil once they get to the environment.

The best thing to do is to return them to us, or take them to your local pharmacy, where they can safely be disposed of for free.

Happy International Chocolate Day!

While we humans can indulge in chocolatey treats, it’s important to remember that chocolate is toxic to our furry friends.

Keep an eye out for symptoms of chocolate poisoning in pets, such as vomiting, diarrhoea, rapid breathing and increased heart rate. If your pet shows any of these signs, contact your vet immediately.

If your dog ingests chocolate, keep the wrapper and estimate the amount consumed to help your vet provide the best care.

Before we know it, fireworks season will be here, and many pets will be struggling with fear and serious anxiety!

Here are some of the things you can do:

🧨 Consider behaviour therapy as soon as possible, to allow time for your pet to grow desensitised to the loud fireworks sounds.

🧨 Introduce calming pheromones in diffusers or sprays a couple of weeks before fireworks season starts.

🧨 Prepare a safe and comfortable space in a quiet location far away from the noise and let them settle in advance.

If you have any questions or your pet needs specialised behaviour therapy, give us a call, and we’ll be happy to help!

Our wonderful night team, Pam and Rachel, came to Scarlett's rescue when she had problems delivering her puppies. 5 healthy puppies were born via caesarean, when the majority of us were tucked up in bed.
I am pleased to report that mum and puppies are all doing well. We look forward to seeing them for their health checks, vaccinations and microchips in a couples of months.

serves two purposes 🔽

1️⃣ A day to celebrate all blind dogs in the world and ways we can support them – as all dogs are good dogs.

2️⃣ Highlight that whether partially or fully blind, they can lead a fulfilling life with a great quality of life!

Owners support blind dogs by creating a safe space, not rearranging home furniture, and training methods such as using audio cues to help make navigation easier and giving them sound-based toys to make play easier for them.

This is only a slice of ways we can support blind dogs.

And the beautiful Loki is demonstrating both purposes perfectly 💖 Thank you to Tower Vets, Knaresborough for the video!

No owner wants to think of all the bad things that can happen to our furry friends, especially during those precious summer beach adventures, but it’s best to understand the risk of drowning in pets and know how to avoid this. 🌊

Drowning can happen quickly, and you might not even notice your pet is struggling! Even if they are used to being in the water and are strong swimmers, it’s not difficult to run into serious issues.

To avoid this, we recommend never leaving your dog unattended when they are swimming or around water and to ensure they wear a life jacket.

If your pet might have inhaled water or is struggling after a near-drowning event, call us as soon as you are able!

Meet Bronny, she saw Lucy recently at our Melksham surgery, presenting with foreign material in her eye. Bronny's owner had managed to remove 5 pieces of wood bark at home but this wasn't all of it. Lucy, using local eye drops, removed 15 further pieces.

We are pleased to announce that there was no long lasting damage to Bronny's eye. 😻

Bronny was such a brave girl we had to give her a mention.
