**Event Update** - Cirencester Park (1)
Large parts of the park remain waterlogged. Although the course is set it would be unsafe to run with more rain forecast, so regrettably the fixture at Cirencester Park (1) on Friday 22nd – Sunday 24th March is abandoned.

16”2 bay warmblood gelding

Oakley is a 5 year old by Cantona TN. He is working well on the flat proving to have big elastic movement in all three paces. He loves his jumping and is very straight and honest to a fence. Due to the wet weather Oakley hasn’t XC schooled on grass but he has seen ditches and drops and water.

Perfect to catch, shoe, clip, load and will hack alone and in company. Will live in or out, up to date with vaccines teeth and physio.

Oakley has been produced slowly with his future in mind but is ready to get out and compete this year! His owner has had him since he was a 2year old so this is a very hard sale, however due to her commitments she doesn’t have time to bring him on.

The Highway Code has changed from today (29.01.22)

When driving, you should now pass horse riders and horse-drawn vehicles at speeds under 10 mph and allow at least 2 metres of space. Check the changes, let’s keep each other safe.

Endi is now looking for a new 🏡 He’s been with us for a couple months really enjoying doing a bit of everything, jumping, dressage, arena eventing, hacks on Cannock chase and beach rides !! Rides in a snaffle for everything, never strong or silly.

He’s previously been successful in pure dressage competing up to advance medium in France making him the perfect school master, however after a year off competing while his owner relocated from France back to the Uk we think he’d love a more varied life with a young adult/ competent teen. Endi has been back out doing elementary and medium tests and jumping British novice BS and schooling over 105 at home with scope to go on.

He’s easy to have on the yard and at shows really would be a teenagers dream !

We are finally all dried out from a rainy day ! Huge thanks to all the organisers and volunteers for keeping the day going despite the weather !

All three of my 100 horses were in the top 5 after dressage💃🏼 !

My own 6 year old Diamond Bandit jumped a perfect clear in the showjumping keeping us in the lead, however a tough track highlighted our homework XC. A costly mistake at a skinny cost us the win, but still
I’m so pleased with this young horse.

Lexington mail did a lovely sub 30 test at his second run of the year and despite the conditions tried his heart out for me in both jumping phases. BIG future ahead of this horse 😍.

Remus Valhalla pulled out yet another beautiful test however this dressage horse is new to the eventing world so found the mud and rain a bit much so we decided to come home early off XC to keep his confidence up. There’s always another event 💪🏻

On Monday evening we welcomed “calypso” to the yard! A very tall pretty girl with four white socks and a little star. She’s from our lovely brood mare Nina by stallion Jacondrik ! Both Nina and baby Callie are doing well, very excited to watch her grow up with our other foal Max 🍼

Great day out in the sun on Sunday. All our young horses pinged round thanks to the hard work rolling and harrowing put in by the team at Aston to keep the ground going after a heavy week of rain !

✨Remus Valhalla did a mega test for 26 unlucky 4 faults showjumping and speedy clear xc. Leaving him just outside the top 10!

⭐️ Nina’s Gems dressage is improving with every outing, with a respectful 31 double clear. Unfortunately Josh had to run her HC as there wasn’t an open section for her in the 90.

🌟 Diamond Bandit back out for his second BE100. He scored a 34 to put him in 4th after dressage one pole showjumping dropping him to 8th and stormed round the Cross county. Only to realise Ellie had jumped one of the 90 combinations resulting in her elimination !! !

We are next out at Rockingham on Friday with Gem for BYEH. Followed by a quiet few weeks training at home before heading to Stafford.

Gem was definitely the most chilled horse at BYEH class, not even slightly bothered by the atmosphere. It was a great experience for her and we’re excited for her to progress this season! Looking forward to Aston BE90 Open and Rockingham BYEH 🐎

Very educational trip to . First timers Hal and Gem flew round the 90. Gilbert had a go at first 100 and was a star however I was one of 5 riders to miss a fence 🤦🏼‍♀️ Next stop is Aston in a couple weeks 🙌🏻

So over the last few weeks I’d received a number of messages inquiring about my backing services. Unfortunately I had to let these people know that I’d made the decision earlier on in the year to no longer offer this service..

The reason being was because at £200/week it no longer made financial sense, or any kind of sense to put my body and livelihood at such risk.. I’ve had a few hospital visits over the years from backing horses and I’m always hearing about other professionals who are becoming seriously injured through horses they’ve had in for backing. They then usually require months off of work, are suffering from injuries that will have life long effects and have no way of covering their bills. All other professions classed as dangerous (oil rig workers, gas engineers) are rewarded greatly financially for it. Why is it different in the equine world?

I know of others who offer this service at a much cheaper rate than myself.. I just struggle to understand how this is even possible or worth their time? Look at it this way..

It would cost approx £120/week to simply have a horse on full livery. For only an extra £80/week this is whats included in a backing livery:

2 professionals (backing a horse is a 2 person job).
Time to groom before each session
Time to wash off/brush off after each session.
Time spent catching and turning out (if the horse has issues around being caught/led, this will require extra time outside of the groundwork/ridden sessions).
Time spent teaching a horse to tie up quietly.
Time spent desensitising to equipment that will be used.
Time spent teaching ground rules and basic aids from the ground (stopping, backing up, forequarter&hindquarter yields).
Teaching horse to lunge and respond to voice cues.
Teach to stand patiently and park next to mounting block.
Teach to be okay with height and sound above him (may need another horse and rider for this).
Teach to accept the bit and then respond to different cues from the hand to the bit.
Long line
Teach to be okay with the saddle.
Teach to be okay with getting on and off both sides.
Installing brakes and the understanding to move forwards from the leg in walk, trot and then canter.
Teaching horse to steer.
Hacking out
Possibly pop a few jumps.
The peace of mind you have knowing your horse is not going to put you in hospital as soon as you lower yourself into the saddle!

To get all of the above achieved (within the time frame of 4-6 weeks) in a correct, safe and ethical way, at least 2 hours would need to be spent working through the above with the horse 5X per week.

£200/week = just over £28/day.
Just to compare, it would cost around £20/day to simply have your dog stay at a kennels!

Think of all of the extra time, expertise and resources that are required to back a horse. Not to mention the danger aspect I spoke of earlier… Yet for this price I still had people attempt to bargain me down/not hear from them again once I’d revealed my price.

If this post has done one thing, hopefully it’s made a few people appreciate what an unbelievable deal they are getting when sending their horse away for backing! Maybe it will also encourage a few professionals to reflect on their prices for this exceptional service they provide..
