***** PARVOVIRUS *****

Please be aware. In conjunction with other local practices we are becoming increasingly concerned about a number of Parvovirus cases reported from the Kennoway/Leven area.

Parvovirus is a highly infectious viral disease that causes severe diarrhoea in dogs and can be fatal. Protection against this disease can be achieved through vaccination and is given as part of our core vaccine protocol.

As a precautionary measure, we will be advising a 3rd vaccine at 16 weeks for all of our Puppies (the most vulnerable) and request that any dogs with symptoms of severe diarrhoea are kept outside the practice and where appropriate tested BEFORE entering the premises. This is to protect our other patients.

Where dogs are unvaccinated, or those whose vaccines have lapsed - we are adding additional clinics to restart their cover starting next week.

Meanwhile it would seem sensible to avoid common dog walking routes in the Levenmouth area and keep dogs on leads to prevent contact with unknown dogs and to avoid them from investigating any faeces left by others.

Very sad week for everyone at the practice as we had to say goodbye to our friend and star patient Geordie. Geordie was a working guide dog and a bit of a celebrity around Cupar. He loved coming to the practice brightened up everyone’s day.

We are truly humbled by the life-changing impact assistance dogs have on their owners and Geordie was no exception. Even through his retirement he was a great advocate for the guide dogs, attending many talks and educational events to raise awareness for the charity. We would like to thank his owners Helen and Mark for their care and for bringing him to see us.

We’ll miss you big chap, have another carrot on us. ❤️

Over 70 budding young artists put in huge efforts to win ice cream vouchers at The Fife show this weekend! They were drawing everything from their current pets, to unicorns and even a velociraptor! (Not our usual patients).
It was not an easy decision but we have some winners!

👀 Eyes 👀

Corneal ulcers are ulcers that form on the surface of the eye. There are many treatment options and one that is sometimes appropriate is the use of serum drops 💧👀 made from...... Blood!
We take the blood and spin it down in our in house lab. We then remove the blood cells and the clear liquid that is left (serum) is used as eye drops to heal the ulcer 😀
Clever huh? 😀
Often we use the patients own blood but if its a very small dog we sometimes use a donor dog.
Meet the amazing Misty who donated 12ml of blood tonight so we could make serum drops for a small dog. She sat like an angel while the sample was taken and her mum and the nurses were super proud of her.

Due to the increased risk of avian influenza from wild birds, an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) has come into force across Great Britain from noon today (Monday 17 October).

From this date, it will be a legal requirement for all bird keepers to follow strict biosecurity measures, as failure to do so could result in more cases. This applies to all bird keepers in England, Scotland and Wales, whether birds are kept commercially or as pets, regardless of whatever type or size. These measures include cleansing and disinfecting clothing, footwear and equipment, reducing the movement of people to and from areas, and preventing access by poultry to ponds and watercourses.

Things were definitely afoot with the arrival of a very special patient at our Leven surgery yesterday 🐶
After careful examination it was decided the left hindlimb required amputation..
Sylvia couldn't hide her joy at the diagnosis 😋
The air was tense as Colin got ready to make his first incision.
'Butter knife please' he requested with an outstretched arm.
Sylvia drooled with excitement as she handed him the instrument.
With a steady hand Colin made an incision that supervet himself would of been proud of.
Sylvia mopped Colins brow and wiped more drool from her chin. After a few tense moments the limb was removed.... and eaten!!!!

Thank you so much to the client who handed in such a novel and very tasty treat.
Just what everyone needed after a 'ruff' week.

❤️*BLOOD DONORS REQUIRED*❤️
Occasionally we have the need to call upon a dog to donate blood for a sick patient.
We have a list of dog donors at the surgery which we are currently updating.
Requirements for donating are....

🐾 Aged between 1yr and 8yrs old
🐾 Weigh more than 25kg
🐾 Have a good temperament
🐾 Be up to date on vaccines
🐾 Be fit and healthy and not on any medication
🐾 registered with our practice so we have access to medical notes
🐾 not recently had puppies

If you would be happy for your dog to be a donor and he/she meets the requirements please contact the surgery to discuss further with a vet or qualified nurse.

We are loving being able to have 1 person in with pets again but unfortunately we are still having to ask clients to wait outside.
If you are not arriving by car during very cold spells please remember to wrap up warm while you wait.
If you have a very young, very old or very sick pet who you feel can't wait outside, please speak to reception and we can arrange for them to wait inside. A dog jacket can be useful as is a blanket to put over baskets or to wrap your pet in.
Hats and scarfs on Labradors is not compulsory 😂
On a positive note, lovely to see the snowdrops, a definate sign better weather is on the way. 😍

Dear lovely clients, with the further easing of COVID restrictions, we can't wait to welcome you back into the practice and wanted to let you know we will still have your own well being and that of your pets at the centre of everything we do. We thank you for all the support over the last 15 months through our changes in working practice.
Whilst Scotland moves to Level 0 today, we have plan to continue our current working practices for another few weeks in order to allow our younger front-line team to receive their COVID vaccines. This will help to protect our provision of vital emergency services. If everything goes to plan we hope to start lifting our restrictions from early September. Further details will follow. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Left on the table in our car park, these glasses have been in our care for over a week.
We brought them in as they were making a spectacle of themselves.
Red and clear markings, only 2 legs, they seem to be of a quiet nature, but we can see right through them.
More of a firey red character.
No collar or microchip. If you know who they may belong to please get in touch as we suspect the owner won't see this post 😁👀🤓👓
