Dental Procedure

Do YOU know what happens when your pet goes for a dental procedure?

Let us walk you through the process! During a dental cleaning, our experienced team performs a thorough examination of your pet's oral cavity (mouth) to assess their dental health. This includes checking for signs of plaque and tartar buildup, gum disease, tooth decay, depth of any gum pockets and other dental issues.

๐Ÿ’ก Next, we use specialised dental instruments to remove plaque and tartar from your pet's teeth, both above and below the gum line. This process, known as scaling, is essential for preventing dental disease and maintaining oral hygiene. Our team takes great care to ensure your pet's comfort throughout the cleaning process, using gentle techniques and monitoring their vital signs closely.

๐Ÿ” In addition to scaling, we may also perform a dental polish to smooth the surfaces of your pet's teeth and help prevent plaque from re-accumulating. If any dental issues are detected during the cleaning, such as fractured or decayed teeth, we will discuss treatment options with you and develop a plan to address them.

๐Ÿ“… Regular dental cleanings are an essential part of your pet's preventive care routine, helping to keep their teeth and gums healthy and reduce the risk of dental disease. If it's been a while since your pet's last dental cleaning or if you have concerns about their oral health, don't hesitate to schedule an appointment with us.

Plaque/Tartar

How YOU can spot build up on your pets' teeth ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿฆท Did you know that plaque and tartar buildup can lead to serious dental issues in pets? Plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, can accumulate on your pet's teeth within hours of eating. Over time, if not removed through regular brushing or professional cleanings, plaque hardens into tartar, which can lead to gum disease, tooth decay, and other dental problems.

๐Ÿ” Signs of plaque and tartar buildup include bad breath, yellow or brown discolouration on the teeth, swollen or bleeding gums, difficulty eating or chewing, and very rarely changes in behaviour such as pawing at the mouth or reluctance to play with chew toys.

โš ๏ธ If you notice any of these signs, it's essential to schedule a dental exam with your vet promptly. Early detection and treatment of dental issues can prevent pain, discomfort, and more severe health problems down the line.

Remember, prevention is key when it comes to dental health! By brushing your pet's teeth regularly, providing dental chews or toys, and scheduling annual dental check-ups, you can help prevent plaque and tartar buildup and ensure your pet's teeth and gums stay healthy for years to come. .

โš–๏ธ | Adder Bites

ADDER BITES: Hereโ€™s what to do! โฌ

๐Ÿ Keep your dog close to you or on a lead around areas known for Adder populations โ€“ this will stop them from bothering the snakes and the likelihood of the snakes striking.

๐Ÿ If an Adder has bitten your pet, call your vet immediately, and if possible, carry your pet to stop the venom from spreading.

๐Ÿ Even if you have been on a walk and haven't seen your pet get bitten but are acting out of character or notice any swellings, call your vet to be safe.

As we go through these warmer months, we will likely see more Adders basking in the sun, where they are likely to be bothered by your pets!

๐Ÿพ True or False?๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿถ "Old dogs can't learn new tricks; it's too late to teach them!" ๐Ÿšซ

๐ŸŒŸ Fact Check: Age is just a number when it comes to dog learning! That said, learned behaviours like reactivity can be challenging to extinguish nut they can always be improved.

Here's the truth:
1๏ธโƒฃ Brain Plasticity Persists: While brain plasticity (ability of the brain to change) decreases with age, it doesn't mean dogs can't learn. They may just need a bit more patience and positive reinforcement.
2๏ธโƒฃ Teaching is Possible: If your adult dog is pulling on the lead, teaching them to walk nicely is absolutely possible! Engage in various exercises and games to make the learning process enjoyable for both of you.
3๏ธโƒฃ Patience and Positive Reinforcement: Older dogs can benefit from patient and positive training methods. Use treats, praise, and consistency to encourage the desired behaviour.
4๏ธโƒฃ Tailored Exercises: Tailor your training to suit your dog's needs. Mix up exercises and games to keep it interesting and engaging.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Remember, it's never too late to enrich your dog's life with new skills and behaviours. Age is just a number; the joy of learning is timeless!

Benefits of castrating female rabbits:

โค๏ธ No unplanned litters
โค๏ธ Prevents false pregnancies and associated
behavioural issues
โค๏ธ Prevents uterine (womb) cancer, which is
otherwise very common in unneutered females
โค๏ธ Prevents pyometra (infection of the womb)
which can be life-threatening
โค๏ธ Allows them to have a life partner
Also, it may:
๐Ÿฐ Reduce aggression and territorial behaviours
๐Ÿฐ Reduce the risk of mammary (breast) cancer
Apart from the health benefits outlined above,
neutering also very important for behavioural
reasons. Male-female pairings will often benefit if
both parties as opposed to just one are
neutered. Neutering prevents unwanted sexual
advances from an uncastrated male or repeated
false pregnancies in an unneutered female, both
of which may cause stress and subsequent
aggression.

๐Ÿพ True or False?๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿถ "That guilty dog look means my pup knows they did something wrong!" ๐Ÿšซ

๐ŸŒŸ Fact Check: The 'guilty dog look' is often misunderstood! It's not guilt; it's stress signals. Here's the scoop:

1๏ธโƒฃ Dogs are master readers of body language. They pick up on cues that signal our reactions. That 'guilty look' may just be their way of anticipating our response and trying to avoid a strong reaction.
2๏ธโƒฃ Dogs don't experience guilt; it's a higher-order emotion. They can't discern right from wrong. Instead, they've learned that certain behaviours lead to a less severe response when they display stress signals.
3๏ธโƒฃ When your dog counter surfs, it's not thievery but a natural scavenging instinct. Understanding their behaviour helps foster a positive relationship.
