XL Bullies and what the new laws will mean for us…
• From 31st December 2023 it will be illegal to breed, sell, advertise, exchange, gift, rehome, abandon or allow XL Bully dogs to stray
• From 1 February 2024, it will also be illegal to own an XL Bully dog if they are not registered on the Index of Exempted Dogs. Owners will have until the end of January to register them and to comply with requirements, which includes ensuring the dog is microchipped and neutered.
• What is an XL Bully? The government description of an XL Bully is pretty broad and could include many breeds, if you think your dog is an XL then we would recommend following the exemption process. The police will be responsible for determining whether your dog is an XL Bully and with currently banned breeds DNA testing cannot be used as evidence when a dog is seized.
• Information from the government on how to prepare for the ban can be found at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/prepare-for-the-ban-on-xl-bully-dogs?dm_i=3VUQ,1LGAE,7Z75K2,60T2S,1
Muzzles - From the 31st of December 2023 all XL Bullies should be muzzled and on a lead in public, this includes when attending the vets. A useful resource for muzzle training can be found at https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/dog-advice/training/outdoors/muzzle-training
Neutering – we will support our clients with XL bullies to ensure they are neutered within the timeframe set below and completing the relevant paperwork to confirm when they have been neutered when this becomes available
• If your dog is less than one year old on 31 January 2024, it must be neutered by 31 December 2024.
• If your dog is older than one year old on 31 January 2024, it must be neutered by 30 June 2024.
Insurance - you will be required to hold third-party liability insurance for your XL Bully, this isn’t the same as insurance for veterinary fees (although third party insurance is often included in normal pet insurance). A cost-effective way of doing this is via Dogs Trust Membership, visit https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/support-us/membership for more information, although read their information closely as they are still awaiting confirmation as to whether this will continue to cover XL bullies once the ban is in place.
Euthanasia – As vets, putting to sleep a healthy animal goes against everything we work for. We would much rather support you through the exemption process, however for our clients who feel this is their only option, once the ban comes into force, we will support you in making that decision and making it as peaceful as possible, as we would with any of our patients.
We currently don’t have any further information on how to apply for an exemption or euthanasia compensation but will update you when we know more. If you want to have a chat to one of our vets about the current situation please feel free to give us a call.
