Here at Butterwick Animal Rehab Clinic, we know that your dog isn’t just a pet. In fact, we understand that the word ‘family’ has, for you, come to mean walks in the park, drives on Sundays, unexpected cuddles in the middle of the night, and treats in the afternoon. And maybe even more than that: we know that your lifetime companion has brought to your life a lot more than most people can put into

words… but, we’re going to try: happiness. Happiness is something all dog-owners share; from laughing at guilty looks peeping out from under the kitchen table, to having cuddles on the sofa at night, we all know how our dogs bring light into our lives. And it’s precisely because we know, share, and cherish this happiness, that our team also understands the distress caused by illness, injury, or old-age, felt both by you and your dog. After all, when your best friend suffers, you feel largely helpless to relieve their pain. The frustration at seeing it happen is almost as hurtful as the pain itself. And that is where we come in (along with your vet) to turn things around and help you and your dog get back to doing things you love.

Happy Friday! To celebrate the weekend, we've got another fun instalment of Dog Trivia for you:

Dogs Can Be Left- or Right-Pawed! 🐾

Just like humans, our furry friends can show a preference for one paw over the other. Studies have shown that some dogs favour their left paw, while others prefer their right.

Have you noticed your dog favouring one paw over the other? Let us know in the comments! 🐶👇

At Butterwick Animal Rehab, we know how challenging hip dysplasia can be for both you and your furry friend.

It's crucial to be aware of the early signs, such as limping, stiffness, and an unusual gait, regardless of your dog’s breed or size. Early detection and proper management can make a significant difference in your dog’s quality of life.

Just as we benefit from warming up before exercise and cooling down afterwards, so do our dogs. Skipping these crucial steps can lead to stiffness and increase the risk of injury. A proper warm-up prepares their muscles and joints for activity, while a cool-down helps them recover.

Warm-Up Activities:
🐾 Gentle walks on a lead to gradually increase heart rate and blood flow.
🐾 Simple obedience exercises like sit, stay, and gentle tug to get their muscles moving.

Cool-Down Activities:
🐾 Slow, relaxed walks to help bring their heart rate back down.
🐾 Gentle stretches to keep their muscles flexible and prevent stiffness.

Ensuring your dog follows a good warm-up and cool-down routine is essential, especially during cruciate season. This helps reduce the risk of CCL injuries, keeping your furry friend active and pain-free.

Here's a common mistake that could cause a CCL injury in your pup... 🐕

❌ Sudden Intense Exercise After a Period of Inactivity ❌

One of the most common mistakes is starting intense exercise or activity after a period of relative inactivity.

Dogs need time to build up their strength and flexibility. Jumping straight into vigorous activities can put undue stress on their joints, leading to injuries like a CCL tear.

If you're concerned about your dog's health, the team at Butterwick Animal Rehab can help. We specialise in helping your dog lead a more active, mobile, and pain-free life. 🐾

As a loving dog owner, implementing a gentle exercise regimen is crucial for your dog’s recovery after a CCL surgery or injury. 🐶

🐾 Focus on controlled activities as advised by your Vet Physio to gradually rebuild strength and mobility in the affected leg.

🐾 Incorporate short, leashed walks and gentle range-of-motion exercises to avoid stiffness and improve joint function.

🐾 Steer clear of high-impact activities such as jumping or rough play until your Vet Physio approves.

Remember, improper exercise can worsen your dog’s condition, so avoid unverified online sources and stick to professional advice.

The Butterwick Animal Rehab team is here to offer that advice if you need it. Get in touch with us today.

As a dedicated dog owner, monitoring your dog’s appetite and weight during their recovery from a CCL surgery or injury is vital. 🐶

🐾 Ensuring they receive the right nutrients without gaining excess weight is key, as extra weight can strain recovering limbs.

🐾 Provide a balanced diet, possibly including joint health supplements—ask us for recommendations to avoid ineffective products.

🐾 Consistently administer any prescribed medications like pain relievers or antibiotics, following your vet’s exact dosage and schedule to manage pain and prevent infection effectively.

Small adjustments in diet and medication can significantly impact your dog's recovery speed and quality.

At Butterwick Animal Rehab Clinic, we offer a range of treatments to support your dog’s recovery from a CCL injury. Here’s how we can help:

Physiotherapy: Our skilled vet physios will assess your dog’s movement and posture, creating a bespoke treatment plan that includes exercises for your pup to do at home. This tailored approach helps your dog return to their happy, pain-free self.

LASER Therapy: This promotes your dog's natural healing. It stimulates cellular activity, boosts endorphin and collagen production, and improves circulation, enhancing mobility while reducing pain and swelling.

Pulse Magnetic Therapy: This therapy uses pulsed electromagnetic fields to restore damaged cells to their normal state, speeding up the healing of bones, nerves, and soft tissues, while also alleviating pain.

Hydrotherapy: Our state-of-the-art hydrotherapy options, including a pool and underwater treadmills, provide warm, soothing water that eases joint pain and helps relax muscles. The water’s buoyancy supports your dog during exercise, which is essential for regaining muscle strength lost during inactive periods due to pain.

Each of these treatments is designed to give your dog the best chance at a full recovery. If you're concerned about your dog's CCL injury, don’t hesitate to get in touch. We’re here to support every step of their journey back to health! 🐕

As a concerned dog owner, it’s crucial to create a supportive home environment for your furry friend’s recovery after CCL injury or surgery. 🐶

🐾 Provide a cosy, quiet space with a comfortable bed away from busy areas.

🐾 Place essentials like food and water in raised bowls with a non-slip mat to prevent slipping while eating or drinking.

🐾 Adding non-slip mats on laminate flooring, especially in areas where your dog might turn corners, can significantly reduce the risk of re-injury.

🐾 Keep your dog warm, especially during the colder months, to aid their comfort and recovery.

These simple changes can really enhance your dog's healing environment.

Here's our top tip of the day! 💡🐾

While movement is crucial for your dog's CCL injury recovery, it's essential to strike a balance and avoid overexertion, which could potentially worsen the condition or delay healing.

Start with short, controlled (on-lead) periods of exercise and gradually increase intensity and duration as your dog's strength and mobility improve.

Pay close attention to any signs of discomfort or fatigue, such as limping, panting excessively, stopping on walks or reluctance to engage in activity. If you notice any of these signs, scale back the exercise regimen and consult with your Veterinarian or Vet Physio.

Remember that rest is also an essential part of the healing process too, so provide plenty of opportunities for your dog to relax and recuperate between exercise sessions. By monitoring your dog's progress closely, you can help ensure a safe and successful recovery journey.

Here's a fact about dogs that might surprise you... 🐶

Dogs who have suffered a CCL injury are at high risk of going on to develop osteoarthritis.

This is because when the cruciate ligament is damaged, it can result in a change in the way the joint moves, damaging the meniscus – a cartilage that acts as a cushion inside the joint.

Joint supplements can help lubricate the joints and may slow down the process of this.

Feel free to reach out to us for more information if you're worried about your dog developing a CCL injury, osteoarthritis, or any other issue - we're happy to help you and your best pal! 🐕🐩

Did you know that there are a number of things you can do to support your dog through their CCL injury?

Conservative management includes:
🐾 Weight control
Keeping your dog at a healthy weight prevents any extra strain on your dog’s joints and ligaments.

🐾 Controlled exercise regime
It is important to make sure your dog doesn’t over-exercise and cause themselves any undue pain afterwards.

🐾 Medication
Your veterinarian may prescribe anti-inflammatories and pain relief to help with the management of a cruciate ligament injury.

🐾 Joint supplements
Dogs who have suffered a CCL injury are at high risk of going on to develop osteoarthritis. Joint supplements can help lubricate the joints and may slow down the process of this.

Feel free to ask us in the clinic for more information about any of the above so that you are in the best position to help your furry friend – we’re more than happy to help! 🐶

Knowing the signs of a cruciate ligament (CCL) injury in your dog can help you seek treatment quickly.

Look out for these 5 key signs:
🐾 Limping: If you notice limping or lameness with either of the back legs, it could indicate a CCL injury. This might vary from a slight limp to complete loss of leg function.
🐾 Stiffness: Stiffness in the back legs, especially when arising or sitting down, could be a symptom of a CCL injury. This stiffness may improve slightly with movement but is usually more noticeable after rest.
🐾 Unusual Gait: An unusual or abnormal gait, where your dog may be favouring one leg over the other, or walking in an irregular manner, could be due to a ligament rupture.
🐾 Swelling: Swelling over the knee joint is another sign of CCL injury. It can cause discomfort and visibly affect your dog's ability to move or exercise.
🐾 Unwillingness to Exercise: If your dog seems reluctant to exercise or play, or if they become tired quickly, this could be a symptom of a CCL injury.

If you're worried about your dog's health or want to prevent a CCL injury, don't hesitate to bring them in for a check-up. Conservative management methods such as hydrotherapy, and physiotherapy can often be used to avoid surgery or aid recovery.

Did you know that, just like we might get an ACL injury in our knee, your dog can suffer a CCL (cranial cruciate ligament) injury?

Dogs can snap the ligament in their knee from running at speed, followed by suddenly braking or stopping, and a sudden change in direction or twist. This often occurs during what's known as "cruciate season", when weather improves and dogs become more active after a less active winter season. 🐶

If you're concerned about your dog's health, Butterwick Animal Rehab Clinic can help. We specialise in helping your dog lead a more active, mobile, and pain-free life. 🐾

Contact us today to learn how to help your dog avoid or recover from a CCL injury. After all, you would do it for yourself—why not give your dog the best possible chance?

Our Story

As a canine rehabilitation centre we are very focused on improving your dogs fitness and level of physical function and have an excellent track record (over 12 years) on making dogs better.

We have focused on improving what we do, so we can improve the lives of dogs in our area, enhancing our skills from pool swimming hydrotherapy and aquatic treadmill to more recently including a dedicated animal physiotherapist on our team. We also work with local and national charities such as the RSPCA, Dogs Trust, breed focused local charities and national ones such as Guide Dogs for the Blind as well as our cherished regulars and local people to try to offer as much help and support to those dogs that require rehabilitation and their families. We can help ease them back to fitness or put a spring backing an older dogs step. We don't profess to have the " magic wand" but we offer a sympathetic and empathetic approach with proven results which get dogs back on 4 and sometimes 3 feet quickly. Why not contact us and see what a difference we can make to your dog.
