🐈 Importance of vaccinations 🐕

We all want the best for our pets, especially when it comes to keeping them healthy, we know there is a lot of information about vaccines and it can become very confusing so we are here to break it down for you.

Vaccinations are needed to

✅️Protect our pets from nasty, life-threatening diseases

✅️Give peace of mind

✅️Create or boost our pets' immunity to certain diseases

✅️Prevent our pets from passing on a disease such as Leptospirosis, which can be passed from animals to people

Sadly, a lot of the diseases our pets can catch if they aren’t vaccinated are fatal in most cases. Even if your pet catches one and is able to recover, they will often be left with long-term problems, which can put them through a lot of pain and distress and leave you with some costly vet bills.

What's vaccines cover-

Dogs 🐕
● Leptospirosis
●parvovirus
●Canine distemper
● hepatitis

Cats 🐈
●cat flu
●infectious enteritis
●leukaemia virus

Rabbits 🐇
● myxomatosis
●haemorrhagic disease 1 (rhd1)
●haemorrhagic disease 2 (rhd 2)

Our Pets should be vaccinated while they are young to protect them. Vaccination courses for kittens and puppies start from around eight to ten weeks old. Rabbits can have their vaccines from as early as five weeks. After their first course, your pet will need yearly boosters to keep them protected.

DONT FORGET THAT VACCINES ARE INCLUDED IN OUR AMAZING VIP PLAN -

2-year-old clover came in this week to see exotic enthusiast Kimelle for a all over health check.
Clover was only adopted 2 weeks ago, and her new mummy was concerned about some of her strange behaviours such as occasional, open mouth breathing.

Clover was showing a flemhen response - The flehmen response is an animal behaviour in which the animal curls back the upper lip. This exposes the front teeth and gums.
This is actually a means through which the pheromones and certain scents are transferred into the vomeronasal organ
To take in and learn more about their environment.

The snake vomeronasal organ is remarkably large and contains more sensory neurons than the snake’s main olfactory apparatus. It appears to detect sexual scents, conspecific scents, and prey odours.

☀️ The weather is warming up ☀️

Please keep all pets safe in the sun 🐈🐕🐇

Heat stroke is a term commonly used for hyperthermia or elevated body temperature. Generally speaking, if a pet's body temperature exceeds 39.4°C, it is considered abnormal or hyperthermic. Body temperatures above 41°C without previous signs of illness are most commonly associated with exposure to excessive heat and are often referred to as heat stroke. The critical temperature where multiple organ failure and impending death occurs is around 41.2°C to 42.7°C.

Signs of heatstroke-
☀️elevated breathing rates,
☀️dry or sticky gums,
☀️abnormal gum colour,
☀️lethargic or disoriented,
☀️sudden seizures,
☀️Restlessness or agitation, pacing, seeking shade,
☀️Drooling
☀️Vomiting or diarrhoea
☀️Reddening and warmth of the ears (rabbits and small furries)
☀️Wetness around the nose. (Rabbits and small furries)

How to prevent heatstroke -
🐾Make sure your pet always has access to a cool shaded area, both indoors and outside

🐾Restrict exercise on warm days (dogs should be walked early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the hottest part of the day)

🐾Pack a water bottle on walks

🐾Never leave pets in a car or a hot room

🐾Ensure your pet always has drinking water available. Adding ice can help keep it cool, or a forzen water bottle for small furries such as rabbits.

🐾 cooling mats (especially in rabbit & ginuea pig hutches)

And always remember, hot pavements can burn paws! If it’s too hot to hold your hand on, it’s too hot for your pet to walk on.

Remember, we are always here to help in any situation. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, just call our reception team on 01322 223311 ☎️

Ninja came in this week to visit exotic enthusiast Kimelle.

Ninja had been quite lethargic for a few days, so Kimelle performed some x-rays to reveal that Ninja was suffering from a chest infection.🩻

Respiratory diseases are among the most common problems seen in all species of pet birds. Because these problems can have a variety of causes.

Antibiotics have been given to Ninja, and a recheck will take place to see how he is recovering.💊

This week, our lead veterinary surgeon Mark performed a tail amputation on 2 year old cocker spainel Parker.

Parker suffers from what is called happy tail,
"Happy Tail syndrome" occurs when dogs wag their tails so vigorously that it causes injuries. Despite its cheerful name, this syndrome can be quite painful and range from minor bruises to severe tissue damage. Often, it results in the tip of their tail becoming dry and cracked, leading to bleeding.

In parkers case he wags his tail so much that the continuous wagging caused so much trauma the tip of the tail was dying off, Mark and Parkers owner made the decision that it was in parkers best interest to take his tail off completely to prevent the same situation arising again in the future.

Are your rabbits up to date with vaccinations ?
🐇🐇

We recommend that rabbits are regularly vaccinated to protect them against three potentially deadly diseases:

🐰 myxomatosis
🐰haemorrhagic disease 1 (rhd1)
🐰haemorrhagic disease 2 (rhd 2)

A rabbits first vaccination should be at around 5-7 weeks of age. After that, they should have a booster injection every year. 💉

We even recommend vaccinating all pet rabbits, including house rabbits.

☀️ warmer weather means time to montior our small furries ☀️

Flystrike, also known as 'myiasis'
This is a condition caused by flies laying eggs on fur, 🪰
These eggs then hatch into maggots that burrow under their skin and feed on flesh.
Flystrike is an extremely painful condition, and can be deadly if it’s not treated quickly enough.

Any furries can get flystrike.
however, there are some factors which put a rabbit at higher risk of developing this nasty condition-

🐇Time of year – flystrike is more common in the warm, summer months when flies are most active.

🐇Dirty bottoms – dirty, damp fur is the perfect place for flies to lay their eggs, so if your pet has a mucky bottom, they are at high risk of flystrike.

🐇Wounds – flies are attracted to wounds and will choose to lay their eggs around them.

Symptoms of flystrike include-

🐰Maggots in the fur/under the skin

🐰Patches of wet fur and fur loss

🐰Open wounds or sores

🐰Lethargy (low energy)

🐰Eating less

🐰A bad smell

🐰Collapse

Fortunately, there are plenty of ways you can dramatically reduce the chance of your pets developing flystrike

🐾keep them and their houses clean
🐾check them daily for wounds / diarrhoea

This week, our lead veterinary surgeon Mark and veterinary surgeon Radu performed a pan tsrsal arthrodesis

Tarsal (hock) arthrodesis (fusions)🦴🦴

Arthrodesis means the surgical fusion of a joint. In other words,
the bones forming the joint are permanently joined together so that there is no movement in this part of the limb. Arthrodesis is a procedure that is generally only performed when there are no other options to save the function of the joint.
Fusion of the tarsal joints is often needed when there has been so kind of traumatic damage to the joint often involving ligament damage. Some breeds are especially prone to spontaneous collapse of the tarsal (and carpal) joints under normal loading.

⚠️Worms⚠️

Worms are parasites that can live in the gut tract, heart, or lungs in dogs and cats.

The most common worms are
🪱roundworms,
🪱hookworms,
🪱whipworms
🪱tapeworms,
although lungworm is becoming an increasing problem in the UK.

While lungworms live in the respiratory system,
all other worms live in the gastrointestinal tract and can be easily treated before they cause serious problems.
They can be picked up if your pet eats contaminated soil, faeces, or rodents. In fact, many puppies are born with worms that are contracted from their mother’s milk.

Worms can cause:

⚠️Vomiting
⚠️Weight loss
⚠️Increased appetite, weakness, and diarrhoea
⚠️Swollen abdomen
⚠️Dehydration
⚠️Lungworm can cause coughing and bleeding

It’s essential that you give your pets regular de-worming treatment.

Veterinary surgeon Luis was presented with an unusual case this week.

On examination, it was very clear that the case in question was a forgein body, but not the type we all expected.
An ex-lap was performed, and the forgein body was revealed to be tape worms.

Tapeworms are flat, segmented intestinal parasites of the cat and dog. They belong to a different family than other intestinal parasites, such as hookworms and roundworms, which are other common intestinal parasites of cats and dogs.

The tapeworm uses its hook-like mouthparts for anchoring to the wall of the small intestine. Eventually, adult tapeworms reach lengths of up to 30 cm. As the adult tapeworm matures, individual segments break off from the main body of the tapeworm and pass in the cat's faeces. The segments resemble grains of rice and are about 12 mm long and about 3 mm wide.

A variety of products are available to treat tapeworms in cats, but they are not all equally effective. The most effective worming products are only available by prescription from us.

Don't forget we are here for all your surgical and non surgical needs.

Today at Mead, an arthroscopy was performed 👨‍⚕️

Arthroscopy is a technique for examining the inside of a joint using a small telescope and camera.🔭

It allows detailed assessment of a joint in a minimally invasive fashion, avoiding some of the risks and discomfort that can be associated with traditional, more extensive ‘open’ surgery. 🦴

An arthroscopy is often performed to gather information to help make a diagnosis and decide on treatment options and the outlook.🩺

Arthroscopy is most commonly performed on the elbow for investigation and treatment of elbow dysplasia,
and on the shoulder for conditions such as osteochondrosis, biceps tendon, tears, and ligament ruptures. 🐕

Arthroscopy may also be used in the knee and, less commonly, the hip, wrist, and ankle joints.

17/06/2024

This week, our night team performed surgery on a turkey called verity.

Verity presented with a re**al prolapse.

A re**al prolapse is a condition in which one or more layers of the re**um are displaced through the a**s,the opening that allows digestive waste to leave the body.

More specifically, a**l prolapse is when only the lining of the re**um protrudes through the opening, and re**al prolapse is when all the layers of the a**l tissue, along with the lining, protrude. 🐾

Turkeys with a re**al prolapse will demonstrate persistent straining and pain while passing stool (or defecating).
In an incomplete prolapse, a small portion of the lining of the re**um will be visible during excretion, after which it will subside.
In a complete prolapse, there will be a persistent mass of tissue protruding from the a**s. 🩺

Once the underlying cause of the prolapse has been identified and treated,
Steps are then taken to decrease the swelling and return the displaced tissue to its proper location inside the ferrets a**s.

An ingested foreign body can cause a number of symptoms and complications in dogs, from simple vomiting to a dangerous internal injury or intestinal obstruction. 🩺

In cases in which an object or foreign body is not passed or expelled naturally, it may be necessary to have it removed surgically.

If a foreign body is suspected, abdominal radiographs (X-rays) will be performed.
In addition, it may be recommended to have blood and urine tests to assess whether the patient's health has been compromised by the obstruction, 🩻

If an obstruction is diagnosed or suspected, exploratory surgery is generally recommended.
Exploratory laparotomy, also known as ex lap, simply means an operation, where a vet opens your pet’s abdomen (belly) to explore its contents.

On this occasion, we removed a chewed up oven glove 🧤
