Dear followers,

We regret to inform you that we are closing the centre (effective immediately.)

Our Directors (Jade & Georgia,) have worked tirelessly 24/7 over the years to help the public and hundreds of suffering wild animals, but due to family, health, work and study commitments, we can’t keep the centre staffed and operational, and have therefor decided to close until further notice.

WE WILL STILL BE HELPING ANIMALS- BUT ON A SMALLER SCALE AND ONLY FROM BURNHAM HOUSE VETS.

We will no longer be able to respond to the hundreds of messages we receive through Facebook messenger but we will provide an automated reply listing nearby vets/wildlife rehabbers.

This has been a very difficult decision, taking months of deliberation, but our Directors must put their, lives, health and families first which we are sure you will all understand and support 🌻.

Jade and Georgia have promised to continue helping wildlife taken to Burnham House Vets (Dover) and will continue hand-rearing baby birds/mammals as they have done for many many years now.

Thank you to everyone who has and continues to support us 🌟 We’d like to give special thanks to the amazing Sophia Jane Rudkins who has been an AMAZING volunteer and support over the last 2+ years 🌟

We will keep our Not-for-profit status and continue to raise funds as necessary for helping wildlife in need (just on a smaller scale.)

Thank you all for your understanding 🙏🦊

Just to update our followers that the remaining two swifts are still in Jades care and doing well 🖤 she’s worked effortlessly for the last 3 weeks to raise these endangered birds who cost us £7.50 a day in live food! (that’s over £150 we’ve spent on their rehabilitation so far 🫣- but they’re worth it!)

If anyone would like to make a donation towards their food, please use the following PayPal link:

🎉🎊 And there we have it... our first swift was successfully returned to the wild today (proud parent moment 🥲. )
After a few weeks of dedicated care and feeding, Jade had the privilege of releasing it herself and watched it sore high into the sky where it will now spend the majority of its life 🖤

If you’d like to make a donation towards the dedicated care we provide wildlife, please use the following PayPal link, every £1 helps 🙏:

UPDATE* Thank you to everyone who shared and offered to donate, we now have one being delivered this evening 🤩🙏

We’re looking for a small working fridge/freezer (5ft) or under counter freezer to store animal food.
It would be very useful if it could be delivered to us (near Betteshanger park) and we could really make use of it today/tomorrow as we’ve had a new patient arrive 🦅

Please message us if you have one you’d like to donate.
Thank you.

We love this little swifts happy dance after feeding! 😍
Coming in almost 2 weeks ago at only 20g, today it’s weighing 35g!
A lot of effort, money and commitment is going into raising these 3 endangered swifts so they can be returned to the wild in time for migration.

⭐️ DID YOU KNOW: Swifts are the fastest birds in level flight reaching speeds of up to 69mph (scientifically verified) however other experts claim they can fly up to 105mph! Pretty impressive! ⭐️

🖤 Swift season is upon us 🖤 we currently have 3 beautiful and thriving juvenile swifts in our care. We can’t thank Carley at Gabo Wildlife enough for all her wisdome and expertise on hand rearing these red-listed birds.
Swifts are strict insectivores and require a lot of live food to keep them healthy.

We've recently been inundated with requests for help regrading gull chicks.
As we're run 100% by volunteers with full/part-time jobs and other commitments, we can't always reply to non-emergency messages.

If you find a gull chick please read the following advice:
- If it is INJURED, please take it to your nearest wildlife friendly vets ASAP.
(Locally we recommend: Burnham House Vets- Dover, Briar House vets- Broadstairs, Animal House vets-Deal, White Mill vets- Sandwich, Eagle Vets- Minster.) If the gull needs medical attention out-of-hours, take it to Vets Now Herne Bay (ALL VETERINARY FIRST AID TO WILDLIFE IS FREE- YOU WILL NOT BE CHARGED.)

-If the chick is NOT INJURED you should find a nearby location to raise the chick up off the ground (e.g. a flat shed or garage roof.) Offering a dish of water is advisable however offering food can attract other adult gulls which may attack and harm the chick so we do not advise feeding.
Gulls make exceptional parents and are often nearby, they also co-parent so if something happens to one, the other will take over. They only feed their chicks 5/6 times a day between 4am-10pm so it can be easy to miss.

Removing chicks from their natural environment can reduce their long-term chance of survival in the wild and puts immense strain on rescues. Please ONLY intervene if the the gull is injured or in immediate danger. Many rescues are not admitting seabirds due to avian influenza and the ones that are, are full to bursting point.

💔 It’s with great sadness that we report the Swift rescued from the church in Sandwich passed away today. We saw a deterioration in its health this morning and sadly by mid-afternoon it had given up 🌈.
We worked effortlessly to care for this endangered bird but sadly they don’t cope well in captivity and the damage/inflammation to its leg was quite severe.

Thank you to everyone involved in this case and to everyone who sent kind donations towards the swifts care.

This Swift found itself hanging from a church after its leg got entangled in twine. After being rescued by a member of public, it was brought to us dehydrated and in need of medical attention. We successfully removed the twine and are following veterinary advice to prevent toxic shock.
Today the Swift seems much brighter and is being closely monitored whilst we continue treatment.

Swifts are on the UK red list 🔴 meaning their species is under threat.

This poor squab was the unfortunate victim of a cat attack… With a very nasty wound to its back, a course of antibiotics/pain-relief was prescribed by Burnham House and its now fully recovered and out in the aviary learning to fly for a couple of weeks prior to release 🐦💕

Please help wildlife by offering fresh water during warm weather. It’s easy for wild animals to become dehydrated during these hot temperatures, especially the young ones such as cubs and fledglings. Please ensure clean fresh water is available in a shallow dish to help local wildlife stay hydrated and healthy ☀️💦

07/06/2023

Over the weekend we admitted 10 ducklings which randomly appeared on the grounds of a private school. After waiting 24h, no sign of mum, and no local ponds, rivers or water sources, a volunteer went to rescue them.
🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆

They still have some baby fluff so will be stopping with us for 1-2 weeks before being released somewhere safe and suitable.

Thankfully a successful cub story 🦊🙌🏻

This little girl was found collapsed in a car park and was nursed back to good health before being transported to South Essex Wildlife Hospital for rehabilitation. She will now be raised with other cubs in a suitable enclosure and later be released back to the wild around September time.

Temporarily caring for and transporting cubs to reputable wildlife rescues uses up a considerable amount of our funds. Sadly there are no fox rescues in this part of Kent with suitable longterm rehab facilities so we often transport cubs far to make sure they get the best chance at life.

Thursday afternoon we received a message about a fox cub trapped in a garden with a leg injury. Once we arrived, the cub was unreachable hiding under the residents garden decking, so we set two traps overnight in an attempt to catch it. Friday morning ‘Fiddle’ (as named by the finder) was successfully trapped and taken to Burnham House Veterinary Surgery. We were devastated to discover that not just one of her hind limbs were broken, but both femurs were badly fractured 💔. Under the right circumstances some leg fractures can be repaired, however two hind leg fracture repairs would have been unethical and so the difficult decision was made to peacefully put her to sleep 🌈🦊

⭐️Thank you to everyone involved with this rescue (the kind lady who found her, the volunteers who trapped, collected and transported her, the vets and nurses who treated her, and of course our followers/supporters who donated money to fund the equipment needed to achieve all of this 🧡

This little chap found itself in a tight spot after falling down a chimney! Once rescued, it was taken to the wonderful Animal House Veterinary Services for treatment and thankfully no major injuries or broken bones! After a week of rehabilitation we thought you’d enjoy some photos of the release 😁🐦

🏠 Fitting a cowl to your chimney pot is a relatively cheap and effective way to prevent birds from falling/getting trapped in your chimney.

🙌🏻 BIG SHOUT-OUT TO ALL THE STUDENT & REGISTERED VET NURSES 🌟
Many Vet Nurses are passionate about wildlife care and rehabilitation, often being the ones who take them home from the vets to care for them 24/7 in their own time.

Training to become a Vet Nurse is hard taking 2-3 years, having to pass multiple assignments, case studies and written, verbal and practical exams! The workload is physically and mentally challenging and the list of skills/capabilities a Vet Nurse can do often goes unnoticed….

May is Vet Nurse Awareness Month so we’d like to take this opportunity to say Thank you to all the amazing Vet Nurses who support and work with us at AHPAW 💚

🚨 OUR FUNDS ARE CRITICALLY LOW‼️

During winter we had to shut our doors due to a lack of funding from the general public. As a not-for-profit organisation we rely 100% on the generosity of our followers and supporters.
We’ve recently had a lot of maintenance work performed at the centre such as electrical re-wiring, plumbing repairs, damp repairs, painting and new flooring.
We’ve also recently purchased a second Fox trap/net for catching poorly foxes and we’ve managed to source a second-hand Brinsea ICU unit- a critical piece of equipment in any wildlife centre!

Please can you help us raise the £250 to cover the cost of our intensive care unit 🙏
