We have some places left on our Advanced Novice day in the valley at Roanlodge on 20th April. We will set exercises to stretch the dogs on this already challenging ground. Sarah and Jane (of Jobeshill Gundog Training) have extensive knowledge of the valley to make best use of what it has to offer.

Bring your training group to us at Roanlodge Gundog Training Centre in July for three days training. We can tailor the training to you and your dogs, to make full use of the ground in the valley/obstacles and/or walked up.
Jane (Jobeshill Gundog Training) and Sarah have extensive knowledge of the training areas, and can set challenging exercises for all abilities.

January 2024

Tues 9th - Novice Confidence Building Day

A full day session, aimed at dogs with a fairly good retrieve and stop whistle, and need to build confidence in some handling exercises and blinds.

Time: Arrive 9.30am for a 10am start. Finish around 3/3.30pm.

Cost: £75

Venue: Burnaston, near Derby

Wed 17th - ‘Junior’ session

This is mainly aimed at young dogs (or slightly older ones!) who have a reasonably reliable retrieve and experience of a class environment, and want to step up to longer training sessions, but aren’t yet ready for a full day.

Time: Arrive 9.30am for a 10am start. Finish around 12.30/1pm.

Cost: £45

Venue: Burnaston, near Derby

Thurs 18th - Pre-Novice/Novice Marking

Does your dog really mark well? Can they mark not just the direction, but also the length of a retrieve? Do you train mainly alone and don’t get much chance to practise with someone else throwing? This is the session for you.

Time: Arrive 9.30am for a 10am start. Finish around 12.30/1pm.

Cost: £45

Venue: Burnaston, near Derby

Tues 23rd - Novice Exercises

A day of exercises set for novice dogs. There will be marks, blinds, memories and we’ll make use of the features of the ground for a good variety of scenarios.

Time: Arrive 9.30am for a 10am start. Finish around 3/3.30pm.

If you are coming to a training session in Burnaston, please note that Findern Lane (between the village and A38) is due to be closed from Monday 6th to Friday 10th November.

Have you got or do you know of anyone with a new puppy? We are running our puppy confidence class again, starting next week, 17th July. It's open to all breeds, and is a great foundation for further training of any sort.

We had a lovely day in conjunction with Green Acres Gundog Training on an “introduction to water course” Great to have a variety of dogs too - a curly coat, Chesapeake, cocker, and well as the Labradors. Sarah donned her wet suit and we got them all entering water happily be the end of the day.

7th June - Confidence on the Grid and Blinds

Various exercises making use of the grid to build your dog's confidence in casting. The grid is at it's best now, as the grass has grown so the lines are really well-defined. We will also use the lines to help with blinds.

It's a day for retrievers really, but if you have another gundog breed that would find it useful, we're happy to have them. And who doesn't love a photo of a happy spaniel with flying ears???

Today Sarah - Green Acres Gundog Training and I, held an Introduction to Picking Up course. What a fun day! We went from “if you think I’m picking that up, you are very much mistaken” to confidently sweeping, hunting hedge rows, ignoring the other dogs, and showing real natural ability. Well done everyone, it was such a pleasure to see!!!

Thick reeds are no longer a barrier!!😁

We, Jobeshill and Greenacres Gundog Training, held an Introduction to water day earlier this week. Lovely venue and the dogs went from strength to strength, finally doing this retrieve through thick reeds.

Lovely retrieve from Steve Burns' dog on our Tackling Multiple obstacles novice training day yesterday. All the dogs did really well. And we even had nice weather!

Today we held another training day in 'The Valley'. All the dogs (and handlers) went home having learnt a lot from the day. Thanks once again to Lesley Morgan and Roanlodge Gundog Training Centre for the use of the wonderful ground. (Video 4 of 4)

Oscar, also in our puppy class, learning to put his front paws onto an object on cue. His engagement with his owner has increased hugely in the space of a few weeks through playing the games.

About Us

We offer sympathetic, positive, reward-based gundog training for the novice handler. Our classes range from basic obedience, to preparing your dog for working in the shooting field and are suitable for any gundog breed or gundog cross-breed.

Puppies of all gundog breeds are welcome, pet or otherwise, - come and teach your puppy basic obedience in a natural environment outside, not indoors in a village hall.
