This is Willow (officially known as Willow number 2 as I’ve started numbering them 😂). Willow came to us a few weeks ago with some complicated issues involving both the bones in her spine, and her nerves. Her owners feared she may need complicated surgery, and at only 2 years old they were keen to avoid this at such an early stage. Luckily for Willow she was referred for physio, and has made fantastic progress! No surgery on the cards now after her recent follow up vet visit, no signs of pain, and her proprioceptive deficit (where the dog doesn’t fully know where its legs are) has resolved! Onwards and upwards Willow! She’s modelling her new Perfect Fit harness fitted by us, in pink, of course. 😉🎀

Here’s a link to an abstract of a really recently published study by the team at Cambridge University, which looked at recovery of ambulation (walking) in conservatively managed dogs with IVDD:

Background Currently, low-level evidence suggests loss of ambulation associated with acute thoracolumbar disk extrusion is best treated by decompressive spinal surgery. Conservative management can b...

Did you know? We have .animalhealth.uk at the Elms! The tech has been around for over 40 years in the human field, and in more recent years we have started using this amazing modality in animal health too. It’s fantastic for all tissue types, and has far fewer contraindications to some of the other modalities we use such as LASER. Drop us a message to find out if it can help your animal!

It’s really frustrating to hear this still. I’ve owned a forelimb amputee myself and the compensation patterns can be severe. These days we have so many more options. At The Elms, we can advise on and supply orthotics and prosthetics for a number of issues. Drop us a message to see how we can help 🌳

Everyone, meet Ruby! Ruby has been coming to the Elms for rehab since she was diagnosed with grade V IVDD. She is under the team and has been doing extremely well recently! She has been working really hard in the water treadmill and is having weekly physio sessions on top of all the hard work her owners are putting in at home. She gets quite excited to come to the centre and Sarah gets lots of kisses! Well done Rubes 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼❤️

8 month old Frank checking out the water treadmill! He came via the Elms to meet up with his adopter and go to his new home! 🏡 ❤️ He is recovering from a leg fracture and a nasty infection. One of the volunteers at Dachshund Rescue UK has been looking after him and brought him to the meet-up. He had an Indiba treatment as part of his physio session to help heal his leg wounds, and we’re hopeful he will be allowed in the treadmill with some water in next week 😂 💦

It’s here! We’ve taken delivery of our new .animalhealth.uk .en machine. Indiba is a radio frequency treatment that is excellent for all types of healing and all tissue types. There’s load of research to back up its efficacy and we’re already seeing some excellent results in our IVDD patients. Our physio Sarah has been using the modality for several years already, and has some fantastic case studies in horses. We will be adding some info to the website in the coming weeks, but for now you can visit the Indiba website to read all about it!

When the sausage sees the snacks! This started as us trying to get some nice pictures of the dogs in the centre, with the water treadmill in the background, and just descended into carnage. Not sure why we expected anything else really!

The underwater treadmill is fantastic for our spinal cases, but also really good for dogs that are very overweight, and dogs that are arthritic due to the reduced weight bearing provided by the buoyancy of the water. It still allows us to carefully control movement whilst reducing the loads crated by gravity and ground reaction forces on the joints.

Busting the myths! There’s so much misinformation on the internet about this disease! We see so many posts on social media, in groups targeting owners, yet largely the advice being offered is not from experts, but just from dog owners who have experienced the disease, and in some cases, these people are labelled as “group experts”. Please please please 🙏🏼 check the credentials of anyone offering advice online. If in doubt, speak to a veterinary professional with experience of the condition.

Our centre, based near Doncaster in South Yorkshire, was purpose built by Dachshund Rescue UK as a place to rehab dogs affected by IVDD that come into rescue, or to support Dachshund owners whose dogs have been affected by the disease. The profits from@the centre go back into rescue to help the charity to be more self-sustaining. We are able to offer outpatient appointments at present, but we are hoping to extend this service in the coming months, so watch this space!
