It feels like Percy the most unwanted Pug in Yorkshire ๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿž๐Ÿ˜ญ Heโ€™s been with us for almost a whole YEAR now (thankfully in foster), but he really, REALLY needs to find a permanent home ๐Ÿก๐Ÿž๐Ÿ’›

The reason heโ€™s been constantly overlooked and unwanted?? He barks at dogs on walksโ€ฆ that is all - yet everybody just wants โ€˜perfectโ€™ with no compromises ๐Ÿ˜”

Percy is 5 yrs old and is THE sweetest, friendliest little loaf ๐Ÿž who can happily live with a female dog ๐Ÿถ

Can we finally find him the home he deserves who will love him for him, and just make some compromises for his walks (which really equate to only 1 hr out of 24 every day) ๐Ÿž๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿž๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿž๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿž

We are on a mission to expand our network of fosterers! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฐ

We currently have a small yet mighty team of volunteer fosterers that help us care for hundreds of animals each year, who otherwise would have nowhere to go. The need for fosterers is greater with each passing year and we would love for you to come and join us!

On Saturday 10th August we are inviting you to come down and have a chat with us, find out more information on how to foster and discover why fosterers are so important to the animals we care for. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to meet some of our current fosterers and they will be on hand to answer any questions you may have!

Interested? If so then please pop down to RSPCA Doncaster and Rotherham 1pm tilโ€™ 3pm on Saturday 10th August.

We look forward to seeing you there!!!

P.S there may even be cake and a cuppa in it for you! ๐Ÿซ–๐Ÿฐ

Well we are heartbroken to be posting this ๐Ÿ’” Poor Sansa was returned to kennels on Friday after less than 1 week in her new home ๐Ÿ’”

As you can imagine, she is not doing well at all ๐Ÿ’” Sheโ€™s such a sensitive soul that this has really hit her hard ๐Ÿ’” She has shut down, is petrified of being inside her kennel (trembling and panting), but also of being outside on our off lead area and had a terribly upset stomach ๐Ÿ’” If anyone out there would consider even fostering this poor poor girl whoโ€™s had the absolute worst luck imaginable, it would mean the world to her ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป her only โ€˜crimeโ€™ is lead reactivity to other dogs ๐Ÿ’”

After an initial positive start where she had settled into the home perfectly, we heard on Thursday evening that her family wanted to return Sansa to kennels ๐Ÿ’” She had been reacting to other dogs on lead moreso than she had done in recent weeks. We had planned another session with Emma (who has been working with Sansa and had already done an initial session with her new family on the day of adoption to get everyone off to the best start), but sadly didnโ€™t get that far ๐Ÿ’” We were told we have โ€˜let Sansa downโ€™ and that she isnโ€™t ready for a home - we very much beg to differ. This girl is absolutely DESPERATE for a home who will just give her the patience she needs and deserves โค๏ธ

So letโ€™s start all over again ๐Ÿ’” We WILL get you โ€˜homeโ€™ and find your people Sansa โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธ

โš ๏ธ Heat and changes to walks โš ๏ธ

To all clients who's walks will take place over the forecasted raise in temperatures, please be aware that there will likely be changes to your walks during the heat.

Walks may be reduced in temperatures over 20โฐ in order to ensure your dog's safety during their time with me.

Temperatures over 25โฐ will result in the walk being cancelled and replaced with a 30 minute visit in place. I will ensure all dog's have toileted as normal during this time and where appropriate will spend time in the garden doing brain games and offering enrichment.

I have always made these changes during the hotter days as your dogs safety in the heat is priority.

If you are home during your usual slot and would prefer a full cancellation for any walk to visit service change, please let me know ahead of time so I can plan visits and travel accordingly.

Remember that no dog dies from missing walks but heatstroke can be fatal!

If you have any concerns about this post, please message me directly.

๐ŸพThank you for your understanding. ๐Ÿพ

We've had a huge contrast in weather over the last few weeks! I've been sunburnt, soaking, blown away and hailed on. You name it, we've had it.

It's crazy that one of the walks in these photos was cut short due to how hot it was getting and that we utilised lots of play in the stream during that week!

Sadly, itโ€™s common to see hedgehogs dead on the road at this time of year. Itโ€™s such a shame for a hedgehog to survive through the long winter months to be run over as soon as they wake. Please please drive cautiously at night, spread awareness and inspire others to drive cautiously too!

โŒ RAPESEED! โŒ

Itโ€™s that time of year again where farmers fields have blossomed into pretty yellow flowers, these plants are called rapeseed. Although it may be tempting to place your dog in the midst to take a scenic photo, please avoid this at all costs!

Rapeseed is extremely poisonous for dogs, especially in highly sensitive canines.

Rapeseed is listed by Dogs Trust as toxic to our dogs if ingested and can cause symptoms such as:

โŒHaemolytic Anaemia
โŒ Blindness
โŒ Damaged Nervous System
โŒ Digestive Disorders
โŒ Breathing Problems

Even walking through these fields should be avoided! In June 2019, a dog was reported to be suffering from severe open wounds after running through a crop of rapeseed.

Please seek immediate veterinary attention if your dog shows any signs of rapeseed poisoning!

Good morning!

As we enter into April, I have a change to services that I need to share.

I don't want to do this, but with the cost of living going up, I need to look at my options.

With careful consideration, I have decided to utilise my daughter until she starts school. Cheaper rates and I can crack on with other jobs! She's a hard grafter and will be happy to help with all of your cleaning jobs!

For more information, pop me a message!

At the centre we are running very low on bedding for our animals to get comfy and sleep on. Any spare towels, Blankets, or sheets would be very much appreciated.

Please note we cannot take duvets or pillows as the stuffing can cause a problem if the animals digest it.

Paddy and Oscar had a joint visit last week - we had zoomies, garden play, brain games and snuggles before tucking them back in for the rest of the evening!

Then we've had adventures in sun, rain, wind.. it's been a very odd week!

Oscar has been doing so well with his distraction training whilst on our walks. Working on him being a little less fixated on those pesky birds and squirrels! We've been practicing our leg weaving and have started a new trick - crawl! (Which he is nailing ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป)

Paddy has been showing everyone how beautiful he is, posing in the spring daisies! We've also been working on a new trick - leg weave and middle walking.. also nailing it!

Both boys have been a pleasure this week, as always!

This week I had the privilege of walking Oscar on his birthday!

He got an obligatory Happy Birthday sang to him when I picked him up and we went to pick a pup cake treat after walkies to leave for his mum and dad to give to him later!

We spent the walk doing lots of brain games and tricks and working on distraction and recall. Squirrel and bird season.. if you know, you know! ๐Ÿฟโค๏ธ๐Ÿฟ

I'm having so much fun taking these two out on their mini group walk! We have such a great time during the hour's adventure!

Yesterday, we had ball time before popping it away for some sniffy walking around the woodland. Then we worked on Oscar's leg weaving (our new trick of the week) and Paddy's spin!

Both boys were VERY quiet on the way home. The sign of a good mission ๐Ÿ’ค

Harnesses don't cause pulling - please read on, especially if you engaged in the post yesterday.

We don't get taught about how behaviour works. We learn shapes and colours, what our eyes, ears and heart are for but our formal (or accurate, informal) education on behaviour is usually lacking.

When working with clients, I often ask them

1. What are your eyes for?
2. What are your ears for?
3. What is your behaviour for?

1 and 2 are readily answered. 3 is usually only partial or inaccurate. The same way we have evolved with eyes and ears, we have evolved with behaviour.

The biological function of behaviour is to affect change in the environment in order to benefit us. That's it. It's no more up for debate than the function of our ears and heart are.

Because we don't know what behaviour is for, myth, folklore, opinion and misinformation is sown into teaching and learning. This leads us to ridiculous statements like

"spare the rod, spoil the child"
"prong collars don't hurt"
"harnesses cause pulling"

The consequences of our behaviour (all beings on earth) drive our behaviour. Work for pay, the pay keeps you coming back, as long as you need the money. Thirsty, drink water if it's available. If its not available, find it, move, act until it is available to you.

We are taught that equipment is what we use to train dogs. Equipment provides consequences to the dog, usually through pain, discomfort, physical control, annoyance.

For example, a dog is on a slip lead and pulls. The human pulls back on the slip lead causing pain. The dog now stops pulling to remove, escape, relieve, avoid the pain. The slip lead directly causes pain, the pain changes behaviour. Same for prong collars, choke chains etc.

So the human learns that equipment changes behaviour without examining why. They then erroneously conclude that if harness doesn't stop pulling, then it must cause pulling. No. The harness, like the one in the photo, doesn't cause pain to the dog's neck or throat. So the dog can comfortably pull. The freedom from pain makes it easy for the dog to pull. When the dog pulls, good things happen (movement, access to smells etc). Those good things now cause more pulling in the future. It's the good things which cause it not the harness. The harness allows, not causes nor encourages. If you stand still with your dog on a harness and the dog learns pulling doesn't work (no movement, smells). You can now teach them that a loose lead means movement, treats, smells etc. Different behaviour, same result.

Next ridiculous comment I get. "Harnesses encourage pulling". No, they may make it easier to pull. If I jump into a Porsche, the car does encourage me to drive fast. That's a truly ridiculous statement. It allows me to drive fast if I want to. Would it cause or encourage me to drive at 80mph through a school zone? No. If you think it's semantics, look up the words "allow, encourage and cause" in the dictionary. They're not the same. Our words matter.

The next stupid comment was "who really knows how dogs learn". Academics. Scientists. People like me and those I've learned from who apply the knowledge researchers find and give them feedback. "But science changes all the time so you can't trust it" - this is an ignorant statement from people who don't understand how science works or what it is even on the most basic of levels.

Critical analysis, removal of black and white thinking, removal of magical thinking, proper education, learning from current text books and not your auntie who has had dogs for 40 years or the guy down the pub who was a police dog handler in the 1980s are required.

If harnesses cause pulling, every puppy would pull as soon as you put a harness on, we wouldn't need to teach sled dogs to pull a sled or horses to pull carts. We'd just slap a harness in them and away we'd go.

Learning and Behaviour by Paul Chance is a great place to start.

Posts like this may or may not provoke strong reactions. If you're inclined to tell me I'm wrong, safe tour time and energy, scroll on by and enjoy your day. This is a business page, not a discussion group or forum.

Love and peace.

Day 3 of Pet First Aid Awareness Month.

This post is going to be about a potential injury that can happen occasionally, especially to active dogs, working dogs, gun dogs etc.

If a dog lands on a fence post or a sharp broken branch they can damage the Brachial artery which is runs through the armpit. Like humans, it's a difficult place to tourniquet so the best action is to apply pressure immediately using your fist, hands, fingers etc

As the photograph shows, a tennis ball is a great object to use to help reduce blood loss. If a ball is squeezed in the armpit, it compresses the brachial artery, stopping the blood flow. Jam it in the armpit and keep it there hard as possible until you get to the Vets. It may just reduce blood loss enough for the dog to recover.

This is an injury I have had experience with working in Veterinary Practice
