HI Everyone

We held a virtual 2 minutes silence at Deerness boarding kennels, cattery and rescue centre as part of Purple Poppy Remembrance 2024 .

We will remember the 9 million often unsung heroes of yhe First World War including Dogs, Horses, Carrier Pigeons, Cats, Elephants, Camels, Dolphins, Sea Lions, even Glow Worms (used to eluminate maps in the trenches) were deployed.

These animals made victory possible losing their lives. Over 16 million served in the First World War. We must also remember the yhe 750,000 animal casualties in the Second World War. As well as those animals who have lost their lives since then in Wars and Conflicts.

At the going down of the sun, and in the morning we will remember them....all of them.

Hi Everyone

It is with great sadness that I have to announce that our dedicated volunteer and Treasurer Maureen Ward sadly passed away on Monday the 21st October.

Maureen was an amazing volunteer, supporter and all round amazing human being. After a very long and distinguished career in Nursing Maureen became very heavily involved in our small charity with a big HEART as well as a wide variety of other good causes. Maureen really was a force of nature!

Maureen and her husband Richard have been truly wonderful Ambassadors for the Charity organising fundraising events, including some truly incredible Grand Prize Draw Raffles as well as our Wet Noses Days, Waggy Tails Days, Fairs and many community based events.

Maureen was even shortlisted for a regional award recognising exceptional work in Charity fundraising. This was despite Maureen facing many health challenges. Maureen was inspirational showing us all what a real, real difference we can make to the lives of Dogs looking for their Forever Home at the Centre.

Thanks to Maureen's and Richard's hard work and dedication our small charity is in an excellent financial position. Their hard work and wise counsel during COVID meant that the charity, run entirely by hardworking volunteers like Maureen & Richard, emerged from lockdown still able to continue to help Dogs in the Rehoming & Rescue Centre's care.

Maureen's legacy, forged out of hard work and dedication, with Richard at her side, will make a real and continued difference to the lives of Dogs waiting for their Forever Homes at the Rehoming & Rescue Centre.

As Chairperson of our small Charity with a big HEART, and I am sure I speak for all volunteers and friends who knew Maureen, that we will all miss her so, so much. Maureen's wonderfully wicked sense of humour, dedication, enthusiasm and most of all we will miss her friendship. Maureen was a wonderful listener and would always be there for you, whatever the problem.

Thinking of Richard, Maureen's daughter Ann and Maureen & Richard's Rescue Dogs Milly and Jenny at this very difficult time.

Hi Everyone

A huge, huge THANK YOU to Mrs M Sanderson, Vice President of the Willington Spiritualist Church for collecting over 16 bags of Dog and Cat Food to help feed the Dogs and Cats waiting to find their forever homes at Deerness boarding kennels, cattery and rescue centre.

We are so very lucky to have such wonderful supporters like these who make a real difference to the lives of the Dogs and Cats in the Rehoming Centre's care.

Hi All

As part of SoSAD's Purple Poppy Remembrance 2024 event we remember Edith Cavell and her Dog Jack.

Edith Cavell was an English nurse who helped over 200 Allied soldiers escape German-occupied Belgium during the First World War.

Edith would sometimes take Jack (pictured here on the right) on walks, providing cover for the escaping soldiers as they travelled to meet their guides. Very sadly he was caught, tried and convicted of treason, and was executed by firing squad on 12 October 1915.

Jack was rescued by Princess Mary de Croy after Cavell's ex*****on and taken to the family's country estate in Belgium, where he remained until his death in 1923.

His embalmed body was sent to the Norfolk branch of the Red Cross. Jack was on display at IWM London until 2013.

A huge THANK YOU to the Imperial War Museum for this amazing image and this amazing look back at such amazing individuals who sacrificed their lives for the freedom we enjoy today.

Edith Cavell (1865-1915) was a British nurse, working in German-occupied Belgium during the First World War. She helped hundreds of British, French and Belgian soldiers escape the Germans and was arrested, tried and executed in 1915.

Hi Pup Pickers

A huge THANK YOU to the 9 Anchors Seaton carew for their collection of £44.62. Our small charity with a big HEART raises a glass to you and your very generous customers!!

They had the fab idea of of having a jar of free Dog Treats in the their Dog Friendly pub but asked customers for a small donation if they took one for their precious pooches!

We would also like to introduce Ned who is waiting to find his Forever Home at Deerness boarding kennels, cattery and rescue centre.

This donation will be a great help to Dogs like Ned, helping the Centre care for Ned whilst he waits to find his new family.

Ned is a lovely Yorkie Cross around 4 or 5 years of age. He is fully vaccinated, microchipped and neutered. If you would like to meet Ned call the Centre on 0191 378 0439.

We are so lucky to have such wonderful supporters and fundraisers.

Woof, Woof & Cheers!!

Supporters of Stray and Abandoned Dogs

SoSAD was registered by the Charities Commission on 1st April 2008, and has been active in fund raising and volunteer activities since that date.

SoSAD has raised funds, which has allowed us to provide financial assistance to Deerness Kennels, in Langley Moor, Durham, enabling us to make a major contribution to the vet bills and associated health care costs relating to the stray and abandoned dogs. As a charity we have no paid staff - all money collected by the charity goes to help the dogs.

Many of the stray dogs collected by the Dog Wardens in County Durham and Darlington are taken to Deerness Kennels. They remain in quarantine for seven days, during which time the owner may come forward and claim their dog. After seven days, all unclaimed dogs are moved into the Stray Dog kennels, where they are given health checks, wormed, flea treatment and micro-chipped. The dogs are also neutered. They are then available for re-homing.

SoSAD promotes a non destruction policy within County Durham. Your donations help SoSAD provide quality care, rehabilitation and re-homing of abandoned and homeless dogs. Your donation will really make a difference to those dogs that are in need the most. Donations can be made through our website www.sosad.co.uk
