Ahead of Bonfire Night, we have teamed up with Magic Classical for the pawfect canine calming playlist 🎶

Calming Pet Sounds, presented by Emma B, plays relaxing classical music to help you create a calm and soothing atmosphere for your dog to relax in. Every dog responds differently to fireworks but staying calm and using music to mask the sounds outside can help improve behaviour during fireworks season 🎆

The playlist is available on the Rayo app or you can tell your smart speaker to 'Ask Rayo to play Calming Pet Sounds'.

And don’t forget our tips 👇
• Plan for a cosy night-in – close the curtains, put on the radio, create a safe space for your dog and prepare with toys and treats.
• Walk your dog before it gets dark and never force your dog outside during fireworks.
• If your dog wants to hide, let them. But if your dog seeks reassurance, calmly give them attention and comfort. Research shows that ignoring them won’t help.
• Give your dog any prescribed medication before fireworks start.
• Check your house and garden are escape-proof. Your dog could try to run away if they’re scared so check your doors, windows and fences are secure.

DON’T FORCE ME TO BE SOCIAL!
It may be really disappointing and frustrating when our dogs are not the social beings we expected them to be.

Many believe dogs should just naturally get along with other dogs, after all they’re the same species.

Some believe the “unsociable” dog has a behaviour problem that needs to be “fixed”.

Early, appropriately timed and correct socialisation is vitally important, but sometimes despite all of this, some dogs are just not that sociable.

Sometimes this can be improved, especially if the cause is from a negative experience, but genetics, breed tendencies, individual personalities, health and age all contribute to tolerance and sociability, which also change throughout life.

If we, as a human species, don’t get along with everyone we meet, how can we expect our dogs to?

Do we label every person that has an argument, doesn’t make friends with everyone they meet, doesn’t like every other person, prefers not to socialise - as having a problem that needs to be fixed?

Why is it so easy to accept that every individual person is different than to accept that every individual dog is different?

When we have done what we can to improve our dogs’ social skills, we need to accept and acknowledge our dogs for the individuals they are, allow and respect their choice of whether to be sociable or not and never force interactions that a dog is not comfortable with.

Great day spent with another round of Borderforce staff and their incredible dogs! The privacy agreement with Borderforce means we cant show photos of dogs and their handlers (the ones in the post were donated by a therapists client :) thanks!) but believe me when I say, these dogs may be professionals at work but boy do they also know how to relax! Did you know that it's important for all dogs, including working dogs, to go into the 'rest and digest', or parasympathetic nervous system state, as this is when repair and regeneration occurs as well as the release of cortisol, the stress hormone to help for a happier and longer working life. I teach specific canine massage techniques, routines and assessment methods to suits the individual dogs to ensure everyone benefits. Well done to the team members who came to train with me today, it was an absolute privilege. Natalie

Bertie absolutely loved his massage with Emma this week. Lovely lady who really took her time to work around him when he became uncertain. Nothing was too much for her, she really puts you at ease and explains everything she’s doing which is really nice. Looking forward to working with her in the future ☺️
