Following the recent yellow heat-health alert issued we want to remind all dog owners about the importance of keeping their dogs safe during hot weather.

While some breeds may be naturally adept at handling warmer temperatures, it's crucial to remember that this summer's weather has been particularly unpredictable. With a long period of wet and cold conditions, dogs haven't had the chance to fully acclimatise to the sudden rise in temperature.

Therefore, it's vital to adjust exercise routines accordingly during heatwaves. Opt for shorter walks in the cooler parts of the day, such as early mornings or evenings.

The yellow alert specifically highlights those at increased risk, and our canine companions can fall into this category as well. Here are some groups of dogs that require extra vigilance during hot weather:

Senior Dogs and Those with Pre-Existing Conditions: Older dogs, especially those with heart or respiratory issues, are more susceptible to heatstroke.

Brachycephalic Breeds:
Flat-faced breeds like pugs and bulldogs can experience breathing difficulties in hot weather.

Overweight or Unfit Dogs: Dogs who are overweight or lack regular exercise are at a higher risk of overheating.

Large Breeds:
Larger dogs generally have more body mass to heat up, making them susceptible to heatstroke.

Thick-Coated Breeds:
Dogs with thick fur coats may benefit from a special brush to remove excess undercoat that can trap heat.

Dehydrated Dogs:
Dogs recovering from illness or travel may be dehydrated, making them more vulnerable. Ensure their water bowl is always full and readily available.

We thank Hot Dogs - Canine Heatstroke Education for all of their research and information they make available to dog owners and dog professionals.

โš ๏ธ RECALL โš ๏ธ

We wish to make pet owners aware that Johnsons Veterinary Products have initiated a Class II recall for Johnsonโ€™s 4Fleas 11.4mg Tablets for Cats & Kittens, 6-tablet pack (D083) Vm 00879/4060.

The reason for the recall is that some units in the batch intended for cats and kittens have been packed in incorrect cartons of 4Fleas Tablets for Dogs (D085) Vm 00879/4062.

These cartons will contain the lower strength 11.4 mg tablets for cats and kittens and there is a possibility that the product will be ineffective for dogs. This recall is only for batch number E154176, 6-tablet packs.

For further information regarding the recall, please contact Johnsonโ€™s Veterinary Products on 0121 378 1684 or by email [email protected] or [email protected]

Tiny chip, BIG difference!
Did you know from June 10th 2024 the law is changing, this means you will have 21 days to make sure your cat is microchipped or face a fine of ยฃ500!

Microchipping is a quick & painless way to ensure your furry friend gets home safe if they ever wander off. Itโ€™s like a tiny ID card under their skin!

Hereโ€™s why itโ€™s important:
* Increases the chance of lost cats being reunited with their families

*Speeds up veterinary professionals identifying cats that get brought in from Road traffic accidents

* Required by law in the UK as of June 10th, 2024

* Quick & affordable procedure

Get your cat microchipped today!

At Portland Vets, we've noticed social media posts doing the rounds again, causing concern regarding rapeseed and its potential dangers to dogs. These posts often list severe symptoms like hemolytic anemia, blindness, and nervous system damage.

It's important to clarify that these severe effects are primarily observed in grazing animals and not commonly seen in dogs. While rapeseed isn't entirely risk-free for canine companions, the dangers are generally much less severe.

Here's a breakdown of what dog owners should know:

๐— ๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜ ๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐—ด๐˜€ ๐—ฒ๐˜…๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐—ป๐—ผ ๐˜€๐˜†๐—บ๐—ฝ๐˜๐—ผ๐—บ๐˜€: Many dogs encounter rapeseed without any ill effects.

How many toes does your cat REALLY have?

Most cats have 18 toes! 5 on each front paw (including that dewclaw that likes to snag on everything) and 4 on each back paw.

But some cats are special! Polydactyl cats have extra toes, making them look like they have little thumbs.

No matter how many toes your cat has, hereโ€™s how to keep their paws happy and healthy:

๐ŸพRegularly trim their claws to avoid snags and ingrown nails.

๐ŸพCheck their paw pads for any injuries or irritations.

๐ŸพWipe away any debris like dirt or litter that might be stuck.

๐ŸพBonus tip: Indoor cats can benefit from scratching posts to keep their claws healthy and furniture safe!

Our nurses are fantastic with helping you keep up to date with all things cat care including regular nail clips and grooming.
You can easily book a nurse appointment via petsapp at your leisure or calling between 9am -6pm on 01732 868680 ๐Ÿ“ž

IS YOUR CAT OVER THE AGE OF 7?

We are holding a Senior Cat Clinic day at our purpose built cat only clinic opposite the practice on Tuesday 14th May.

We know cats can get stressed at the vets, now is your chance to visit our dog free clinic and benefit from this special offer!

For Hypertension Awareness Month we are screening for early detection of hypertension (high blood pressure), kidney disease and reduced mobility.

Early diagnosis of these conditions is key to extending your catโ€™s quality of life.

If any abnormalities are detected, you will be referred to one of our veterinary surgeons for discussion of treatment options.

Places are limited, please book early to avoid disappointment.

You can send us a message on PetsApp or give the team a call to get your cat booked in.
