🎃Halloween - trick , treat or toxin?

Halloween is an exciting time of year. However, it can also cause problems for our pets with sweets and decorations around the home and outside. If you are concerned, call us for advice.

👻Glow sticks - when chewed, have a very bitter taste which can cause some distress and dribbling. A drink of water will help to ease this.

👻Chocolate - affects the heart rate and central nervous system and cause gastrointestinal upset depending on the quantity ingested and the type of chocolate.

👻Raisins - risk of kidney injury even if only a small number are ingested.

👻Chewing gum - sugar-free gum often contains high levels of a sweetener called xylitol which can cause hypoglycaemia and also liver disease.

👻Pumpkins - shop bought pumpkins could cause sickness and diarrhoea if ingested but are not likely to be the more toxic bitter variety. Mouldy pumpkins carry a risk of tremorgenic mycotoxins.

👻Candles - risk of burns. If ingested, the wax will usually pass through but there is a risk of obstruction and there may also be vomiting and diarrhoea

Rabbits are hard-wired to be sociable. In pairs, they will spend most of their time
together and are healthier than those kept alone. Particularly in times of stress,
they rely on each other. Mutual grooming is a joy to watch, and it is a vital natural
behaviour for rabbits. In the winter, they share body warmth to keep out the cold.
Guinea pigs are not suitable companions due to very different dietary
requirements and the risk of bullying

With the weather heating up now summer has arrived, it’s important to
remember that dogs should not be left in the car on a hot day. It can have fatal
consequences.
Did you know? A car on a 23c day can reach 35c in just 10 minutes and cracking
a window or parking in the shade has little effect on cooling down a car🏜🏜🏜

Top tips on keeping your rabbit cool
Don’t keep the rabbit hutch on the ground – improve ventilation by elevating off
the ground eg with bricks. Ensure the hutch is kept in the shade all day. Provide
small pieces of water rich vegetables or fruit, such as celery, as this will help to
keep them hydrated. Regularly clean the hutch. Hot weather attracts more flies
to the hutch. The eggs they lay result in maggots, which often leads to Flystrike,
a fatal condition in rabbits

Be gentle and respectful
Teaching your little ones to be gentle and respectful around your family pet is a
good way to help them to have a great relationship with them.
Make sure your children know to be in your pet’s line of sight before going to
interact with them so they’re not surprised. Then encourage your kids to stroke your
pet gently to give them love and comfort.
For more pet care tips, check out the MiPet Club activity booklet which you can pick
up in our practice today!
