Hi. Here is a little bit more information about me and about why I love dog training and Hoopers so much.
I have grown up around animals, in particular dogs of all shapes and sizes. Being a farmer we have had dogs that worked on the farm, but these have always been members of the family. I have since taken over the running of the farm and have just a few dogs to keep me company.
I started training seriously when I got Zoe the lurcher 9 years ago, I promised that I would take her to puppy classes and it just went on from there; we slowly progressed to competitive obedience and agility (lurchers are not the easiest to train and Zoe is very feel spirited!). I started training obedience at that club, and still do to this day. However, one day Zoe refused to jump at an agility show, she then refused to jump at training and just lost all interest in agility despite not showing any signs of injury or illness. So we went along to a hoopers day, and just like that my happy zoomy Zoe was back. I immediately asked to train to be a hoopers instructor.
The reason why I love hoopers so much is because it is such an welcoming and inclusive activity. We only use positive reward based training, encouraging independence and building confidence. I have watched as nervous dogs have slowly moved from behind owners legs to running through hoops on their own, tails held high. It is low impact, there is no sharp turns or jumps so young puppies and old dogs can be included in the fun, I train dogs that have back and leg problems and provided the vet says it is ok they can join in with the younger fast dogs. It is welcoming to space dogs (also known as reactive dogs), dogs that can struggle in groups with other dogs are given the space and time needed to be able to focus on the game. Even at shows we make space for each other. There is also the unbelievably nice Good Hoopers Awards which we work towards in classes.
