πΎ PHYSIO .... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT πΎ
πΎ KNOWLEDGE - PHYSIO .... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT πΎ
π³ The woods have such a diverse amount of sights, smells, sounds, species, surfaces, textures, objects for us - & our dogs - to experience. π₯°
π Handy for some real life physio too! For example .....
π³ Walking over tree roots - great for proprioception, ie where are my limbs & what are they doing, range of motion (getting joints to extend & flex), weight bearing on different limbs, balance & muscle activation.
π As far as your doggies is concerned .... they are just walking over somethings on the ground! xx
Post Cruciate Ligament Fun
πΎ DREAMS CAN COME TRUE πΎ
π This might look like "just" another video of dogs running in a field.
𦡠BUT ... what is particuarly lovely is the big fella with the big smile & flappy black ears had knee (cruciate ligament) surgery earlier this year!
π One of the things Yogi's owner was hoping for, was for him to enjoy running around having fun again .... & LOOK .... he is! π
β We put together a plan to gradually build Yogi up to this point, minimising the risk of further injury and compensation issues etc. Another post on that to follow ....
π For now let's just enjoy the pure JOY on this boy's face. This is why I LOVE what I do ..... π
ββββ For bonus brownie points, anyone want to guess how old Yogi is? Comment below! x π
πΎ TOP TIP - WORKING ON ACTIVE RANGE OF MOTION FOR DOGS πΎ
Early in the week I mentioned Range of Motion (ROM) .... this can be done
ππ» Actively - ie the dog is doing it themselves
ππ» Passively - ie someone else is doing it for them
π³ A nice way of working on Active ROM (AROM) is walking through the woods over low level items. π³
π¦ΆWhen walking (not trotting/running as a different footfall), your dog has to put weight through each limb individually ....
π¦Ά By lifting up their legs, they are ACTIVELY flexing and extending their joints.
π TOP TIP - if your dog is currently lame, suspect an issue, in recovery please contact your vet/therapist to see if this is appropriate. Always use low items, never force, do in walk. π
πΎ WALKING THE LINE πΎ
π€ When you're walking your dog, have you noticed if they are actually "walking?" Or are they trotting? Both? More one than the other? Can they walk in a straight line? Do they side step, twist? π€
π Dogs are designed to go forwards ...
πΆββοΈWalking can be one of the most important movement exercises for dogs and many struggle to actually walk in a straight line. π²
π«Quite a lot is going on when they're "walking" & many dogs find it tricky. When they walk ....
𦡠They are more likely and able to load each limb equally - they have to use each limb independently
𦡠Will bear weight for longer on each limb
𦡠Helps to improve their gait pattern - ie how they walk
𦡠Improves how they use the limb and each joint
𦡠Activates muscles that haven't necessarily been used for a while (esp after injury/op)
𦡠Starts to build up strength stamina
𦡠Kicks off proprioception and balance - especially useful for dogs who have had Neuro issues.
π§So when you're next out with your dog have a look. Let them decide the pace & see what they tend to go for during the majority of the walk.
π Let me know what you see with your dog in the comments below! π x
Baxter The Dog Loving A Wall Rub
πΎ DOES YOUR DOG LOVE TO RUB? πΎ

π Has been dried off (as in this video) after getting soaked in the rain or being rinsed off
π«£ What does your dog like to rub themselves against?! π€£
