I’m sure most rescues have had this request! Having a single Guinea Pig won’t force them to bond with you better. Human contact doesn’t replace the companionship of their own kind. As a prey animal, living in pairs, groups or herds gives them a feeling of safety and security- so actually they are more likely to be friendly.

We currently have a spare hutch, which has been sitting out in the full sun - so I thought I would see how hot it got in there! 37.2 degrees on a 27 degree day. It was so hot that my phone stopped working. If you have outdoor Guinea Pigs and you don’t have the option to bring them indoors, you need to ensure that your hutch is shaded and you take precautions to keep your Guinea Pigs cool. Provide shade without restricting air flow - parasols work well. Most of the heat will be coming in from the felted roof, covering it with a wet sheet can cool it down but you’ll need to re-wet it regularly. Use fans with a bottle of ice in front of them to cool the air (don’t point it directly at the Guinea Pigs though) Provide freezer blocks or frozen bottles of water. Replace water regularly to encourage more drinking and remove any plastic hides. Give them time in their runs early morning or late evening (I like to leave the doors of the hutches open to let out all the hot air)

This is also general advice, some individual pairs may have specific housing needs. For larger groups, I will be happy to advise.

I do always feel a bit bad telling people these aren’t suitable, as they are so expensive! There’s a couple of things we need to address that are problematic.

Firstly, look at the size of the enclosed area. If you were thinking of using it as a permanent home, if it was raining, they would be restricted to that small bit. The advertising also suggests you shut them in that section at night, which again isn’t appropriate as Guinea Pigs are active at all hours.

Secondly, the base of the run is wired, presumably to keep predators out. Wire floors aren’t suitable for Guinea Pigs delicate feet and can cause bumble foot - which is seriously nasty!

I’ve also heard tales of them not actually being predator proof.

If you would like to keep your Guinea Pigs outside for the summer, you would be better off with a solidly built hutch (6 foot for a pair, ideally situated under shelter) and then daily supervised access to a run on the grass.

Age on Arrival - 9-11 months.

Species - Acacia Rat.
Reason for arrival - Originally came in due to owner no longer being able to care for her. She was rehomed briefly with her sisters, but came back as she kept bullying them.
Character - Generally fine for handling, but can be fast and has bitten when spooked.
Health - In good health.
Other - Will need a large cage with lots of climbing opportunities.

Sadly, we’ve had to separate a couple of pairs recently. Out of the 80+ pairs we’ve had here, we’ve fortunately only had to do this about half a dozen times. Stress bonding is a common reason why pairs who seemingly got on well before, start to fight in rescue.
