Fantastic group walk this morning, at the end of our walk after we have done some different exercises (passing by etc) we work on focus doing lots of different things.
Who would like to take a guess at how many reactive dogs were on todays walk?? 🐶🤔
Loose lead walking 🐶
They are many techniques you can try to get your dog walking on a loose lead next to you.
Try treats if your dog struggles to focus on you.
Change the speed on your walk, fast to slow.
Stop if they go out in front and teach a back cue.
Voice cues talking to them in a slightly higher pitched voice.
Practice in your garden with no distractions.
Start off with just a few steps and build on that.
Repeat daily.
With Lewis if I look at him and talk to him telling him how good he is being he loves it and trots next to me on a loose lead looking up at me all proud.
With Benny I worked on slowing my walk and getting him to focus on what I was doing.
What’s your dogs feeding routine like??
Does your dog get over excited and jump up at food time?
Do you just put the food down and walk away?
Does you dog sit and wait for it’s food?
Do you make your dog do a few tricks for food?
Does your dog eat straight away or graze?
Share your routine in the comments…
I feed my dogs all separately for safely reason obviously I have a lot of different dogs in my household. Food goes down and gets taken away 5mins later as all my dogs are in together I can’t leave food down.
My old dogs and house guest are always asked to wait so I can put the food down without it being taking from my hand.
Lewis likes to work for his food so we do some extra mental stimulation at food times 🤎🐶
It’s important to teach manners around food and at food times.
Someone’s having a bit to much fun in this morning training session 🙈😂🤎 i love him he’s like a big bear 🐻
Bobby can be very high energy when off lead with his brother Billy, often charging at him knocking into him and jumping all over him. He is totally the wrong energy and very over the top!
Dogs energy level can escalate very quickly so it’s important to have the right state of mind before letting them off in a safe environment.
What is there play like at home? If they get out of control at home or in the garden the same will happen when on an open field.
Do they loose focus quickly and switch off to your command? Practice at home with little distractions and build up to when they are distracted, so when you tell them to calm they listen.
Do not let them off unless they are calm, let them off individually first to run off all the pent up energy.
Use a ball, treats so them are more distracted on that than playing.
These are just some of the points we went over today to help Bobby and Billy’s owner be more prepared with training.
Even when he’s asleep you always know where he is 🙉😂😂
🥰 how could you not fall in love with that face!!
I have so many clients that have experience off lead strange dogs running over to their dog (which is on lead) causing an issue.
Off lead out of control dogs are a huge issue at the moment!!
I always say to people if you didn’t know me and you were walking through the park with your family and I came running over to see you all excited, would you join in with my excitement 🤔… NO
If you were walking through the park with you family and I paused and stared at you then ran at you, would you be calm and happy about the situation 🤔…. NO
We as a human race don’t greet each other like that but we expect our dogs to???
Trust and friendship take time!

Huxley is with us today for some more socialising/training around other dogs.
He’s so good at mine happy, relaxed and just fitting in nicely with my dogs.
You would never know he was once a very highly reactive dog (up there at the top with some of the worst I’ve seen and worked with)
He still had his moment when out on walks but we are continuing to work with him and make improvements but this is not a quick fix.
It’s months and months of hard from his owners!
(Excuse the pile of fencing we are updating some old fencing in the garden)
This evening I’ve been back to see how Bobby is doing with his lead training he can be high energy on the lead especially around other dogs.
I was pleased to hear training has gone very well and lots of progress has been made since our first session.
Lewis came to help tonight, we did lots of different exercises to help Bobby be calm and relaxed around Lewis we also went on a long walk.
As you can see in the video by the end of the session Bobby was so calm, happy and relaxed in mine and Lewis’s company 😊🐶
This week I met Winnie for her first session she has issues in the house, garden and out on walks with her barking at most things and noises.
Winnie has taken on a guard/patrol roll in the house but this has made her a very nervous anxious energy.
One of the things we worked on was her energy in the back garden as she pushes out of the back door (like a bull in a China shop) runs round barking and patrolling the fence.
Changing her state of mine so she leaves to go out in the back garden in a calmer relaxed state of mine was the first thing to work on.
We did a few blocking exercises in the house first then moved straight to the back door to practice.
Well done Sam and Winnie fantastic first try!! 🤩🤩
Sorry about my filming skills I was trying to teach and film at the same time 🙈
Little bit of fun but still learning for Sam.
At the end of Sam’s training session yesterday we worked on him giving up the ball something he doesn’t like to do unless it’s on his terms.
He did so well and within minutes he understood what we wanted from him 😁🐶
My son is only three he love to get involved and learn about training with Lewis 🤎🤎
Going to post a before and after video!!
BEFORE
Yesterday I met cookie he has a few issues we are working on but this is the main one he go crazy when he sees animals on tv not just dogs but farm animals as well. He jumps up at the tv barks, growls and gets very anxious and over excited.
This can not carry on he gets so worked up he could end up doing damage to himself.
We started with stepping in front of the tv and backing him away this worked really well and he stopped running at the tv but he was still sitting staring with intent getting himself worked up. We tried to interact with him but nothing worked not even his favourite ball could take his mind off the dogs on tv.
More work was needed to get him to focus on us and not worry about the animals on tv.
We continue to back him away out of the room when ever he looked at the tv.
Check my next post to see how well he got on!! 🐶
This girl deserves a gold star ⭐️
When we first met i would have never been able to even walk on the same side of the road with Lewis as missy was highly reactive and couldn’t be trusted not to take her frustration out on her owners.
I think this is our 4/5 session and we have push on more with her training she can now be off lead in the same space as Lewis and she’s calm and focused on what her owner is saying. She’s so happy in Lewis’s company now and has even shown signs of wanting to play today 🤩🤩 although she doesn’t quite understand how to yet so this is something we will work towards.
