Over ten years ago we made the move from routine worming all horses to a faecal egg count system so only the horses with a worm burden were wormed in order to reduce wormer resistance. From an environmental viewpoint, a reduction in wormer use is beneficial for dung beetles and other invertebrates. Together with efficient paddock management, not over grazing, and with paddock rest periods we fall into the low risk CANTER category. Additionally, we do not use ivermectin nor Moxidectin as both drugs are toxic in the environment for long periods, your horse can still be shedding ivermectin up to 45 days after dosing. Both drugs have a disastrous impact on invertebrates, and birds who feed around horse droppings in the paddocks.

Another busy clinic held at Earlsway Farm with lots of progress being shown from everyone. As usual I’m rubbish at remembering to get any photos of all my lovely clients (too engrossed with teaching!) . . . but I did have a little ride on the lovely Roo and her mum had the camera out.

Plan to arrange some more clinics at this lovely venue so watch this space for details.

It is with deep regret that I must cancel the forthcoming British Dressage competitions here at Earlsway Farm.

Earlsway Farm has a high environmental status being net carbon neutral for over a decade. We capture carbon in soil and wildlife areas, we grow our heating fuel and we offset carbon by generating renewable energy via a wind turbine. This has involved considerable financial investment, but we are very committed to environmental sustainability. We have been acclaimed by organizations such as the NFU and the CLA and featured in their national publications. Richard has spoken at agricultural and environmental conferences.

British Dressage has a rule stating rosettes must be given. I wished to stop using the single use plastic rosettes and proposed alternatives. Despite their move to environmental sustainability, this request was not given any consideration. I started a polite and truthful discussion on FaceBook over this matter. I received positive response and many excellent ideas. Following this post, the situation was escalated by British Dressage in terms that I would describe as not conducive to future collaboration.

Earlsway Farm is a reputable long standing business and we deal with all clients, customers, and suppliers in the same professional manner. British Dressage is the first organization to doubt us on over our net carbon neutral status. We were left with no choice but to discontinue working with them.

I know that all competitors will be disappointed with the loss of a venue in an area with few venues.

All competitors who have made an entry have been emailed, a full refund will be made, and a free hour arena hour will be offered as a small recompense.

I would like to thank Duncan Whitney Groom who was to be the secretary for all the competitions here for his help and his work in setting up the competition structure.

So sorry as this was to be the final dressage competition run here by Duncan.

Very sadly and following an inspection of the outdoor surface at Earlsway Farm, the decision has been taken to cancel tomorrow's competition.
With overnight temperatures set to plummet again and a high of just 1 degree tomorrow, it is highly unlikely the outdoor surface will defrost. An email has been sent to all those entered.

We will travel anywhere in the country but this is what we need...

We will always try and combine clinics to cover 2 locations on similar routes to reduce the carbon footprint or if you cant quite meet the number we need to make it viable.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, British Dressage has taken the decision to relocate the 2024 Winter Area Festival, originally allocated to Anvil Park Stud, to Forest Edge Arena in Drymere, Swaffham, Norfolk.

The Area Festival is scheduled to run on the same dates as originally planned, from 9 – 11 February 2024. We are grateful to Forest Edge Arena for stepping in at this stage to enable the event to run in the region on the same dates.

What a difference a week makes!

Last week we struggled with flooded approach roads and getting soaked during warm-up, whereas today was dry and bright making for far better conditions for our competition at Earlsway Farm with combinations taking part in classes which ranged from preliminary to medium including freestyle.
Lovely to see those who took part and their supporters and thank you to Lotte for judging and Liz for writing.
