These particular videos won my heart today,,, DeeDee bounces through the grass because she cannot see over it and Alice deliberately leads her followers through a stenchy bog!! Kitty is just enjoying the wallowing... All bathed in the sea before they were allowed home 🙏🤗

So DeeDee has decided to go on her first holiday abroad this year. We are being super careful, as over the years we have received phone calls from desperate owners who were not able to travel because their doggy paperwork was not complete!

What a minefield!
Here are some points for EU countries which are not all obvious!

- All vaccinations must be up to date.

- A Rabies vaccination is needed at least 21 days before travelling (the jab lasts 3 years and costs around £97).

- Dog must be microchipped before the rabies vaccination and the microchip must conform to ISO 11784 and ISO 11785 standards.

- A new Animal Health Certificate (AHC) is required for every holiday (costs around £240 and takes 1 hour).

- The AHC can NOT be conducted by any vet, only specially registered ones, we have just one of these vets at DeeDees' practice. If he's on holiday we need to travel to Chelmsford.

- The AHC can only be done once the rabies jab is 'live' ie 21 days after vacation. The day of vaccination is counted as day 0.

- The AHC must be done not more than 10 days before travel. Take into account vet availability, weekends and travel duration, IE if travelling overnight on the ferry!

- The vet must sign and STAMP the AHC.

- Proof of ownership must be obtained from the microchip register, this is provided by PDF and takes up to 2 weeks, check the details are correct before requesting.

- A declaration form is required to state that you are not selling or transferring ownership of your pet, obtained at:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/pet-travel-declaration-for-the-non-commercial-movement-of-animals

- If staying in the EU for more than 5 days your dog needs to visit a vet not less than 24 hours before returning home and not more than 5 days, remember to consider weekends and travel duration!

Treatment is required for Echinococcus multilocularis tapeworm, and must contain: Praziquantel or an equivalent proven to be effective against the multilocularis tapeworm.

- The Echinococcus treatment needs the following recording on your pets AHC:
Name and manufacturer of the product
Date and time of dog treatment
Stamp and vet signature

- Book your appointment at the veterinary in the EU country before you leave on holiday, the tapeworm treatment is a tablet and costs around €49 plus Milbactor tablets and travel to and from the veterinary centre.

If you find this helpful please follow this post, as I will update it if I find out anything more regarding travel.

Other points:

StenaLine provide a limited number of pet friendly cabins, though they need to be in a travel crate/pet buggy at boarding.

When booking our hotel, despite making it clear that our DeeDee was traveling with us, her board was NOT included in the invoice and when we arrive we will need to pay for her stay amounting to £115 for the week at our hotel 🤗

I do not guarantee this list is exhaustive, but certainly covers more than what we were first led to believe 🙏

Update 20/05/2023:
Stena Line emailed me with the expectations of DeeDee when boarding the ship for her holiday, it reads;

Hello.

When boarding to go to your cabin, your pet must either be in a carrying case (maximum dimensions 80cm x 52cm x 52cm) or on a non-retractable lead. For safety, we also recommend pets wear muzzles while in public spaces.

Please stay safe exercising your dogs during the heatwave.

One2One Pet Care have been walking clients early or very late in the day to try and provide an enjoyable session.
Those pups which have fixed appointments are exercised on shaded sand and grass, also given access to our pool, cool mats and plenty of water!!

I find wearing slip-on shoes helps me check ground temperature frequently and instantly.

A Big Welcome to our new family member, DeeDee. She is a 6mth old Bichon Frise cross German Spitz. With the help of our friend, Bella, today DeeDee has proven to have an excellent temperament for our home and business. We are totally in love with her, one amazing little lady ❤️❤️❤️
