Poppyfield Equestrian was established in 1996 by Simon Kettleboro and his Daughter Jo Kettleboro. Jo had long been a keen rider and she together with her father wanted to provide less fortunate children with the opportunity to see life from on horseback, where so often the view of the world is so much greater. Determined that this should not be a pastime available to only those with available fund

s, but to those with passion, drive and enthusiasm, Poppyfield came into existence. The Lincoln riding school centre prides itself on being family based and orientated with a happy atmosphere and team. Poppyfield is BHS (British Horse Society) Approved, which means that they are regularly inspected and has to perform to very high standards. It is also an Approved Pony Club Centre which regularly runs activity days and courses for the children, such as 'Own a Pony' Days, Examination Days and many fun activities throughout the year. We cater for everyone from the small child to the Adult Learner, and provide first time ponies to Elementary level and show jumping horses for clients to ride. We also offer fantastic hacking/ treks in the beautiful countryside.Poppyfield Equestrian has on offer BHS Badge Days, multiple levels of Horse Livery, Horse riding lessons, many levels of horse training and an onsite Poppyfields Shop. By being an approved BHS riding school we pride ourselves on maintaining the highest possible standards. BHS regularly inspect Poppyfield Equestrian to check that we meet their requirements for safety, horse welfare and tuition, ensuring compliance and giving you peace of mind. Poppyfield Equestrian undergo an additional, training specific inspection to ensure that the training provided for career students meets the standard we have been approved to deliver. Just a thought- when I get on any horse, whether it’s slow, fast….. wants to run out stop at a double, spook at a filler, if I’m a true rider think of this………..

For the love of all riding school Ponies and Horses

A small stab in the heart is what you feel when you put up the day’s riding list and you see riders sinking heavily in their shoulders when reading which horse they are assigned for the lesson. A small stab in the heart for that horse that for an hour will carry around a rider who has already decided that he does not like his horse. A small stab in the heart for the horse that did not choose the rider himself but still does his best, lesson after lesson.

Riding is a privilege and something you have chosen to do. If you chose to ride at a riding school, your instructor assumes that you actually want to learn how to ride. The instructor’s highest wish is that you get good at it.

Often there is a plan and a thought as to why you are assigned to that exact horse. Before you mount up next time, ask yourself “what can this horse teach me today?” All horses have something to give, a feeling or a new tool in the box.

The art is actually in being able to get a lazy horse to move forward, to get an uncertain horse to gain confidence, a naughty horse to focus or a tense horse to be released. It takes work. If you think a horse is boring, it’s more likely that you don’t ride the horse as well as you think! It’s not easy to be confronted with your own shortcomings, but it is in that very situation that you get the chance to truly grow as a rider.

The excuse that “it’s not my kind of horse” is actually a really bad excuse. A good rider can ride any kind of horse. A good rider has trained many hours on different types of horses to become a good rider. A good rider can find and manage the gold nuggets in every horse.

If we absolutely want to ride, it is our duty to strive to do it as best as possible, even if it’s only for fun. We owe it to every horse that carries us upon it’s back.

Good afternoon all current riders with us.
Important message for you all.

Just to let you all know that we are having to update our rider registration forms this weekend.
Therefore, we will be needing to weigh everyone when you arrive (including your hat) and we will also require your heights.
This is something that we do regularly to ensure you are matched to a suitable horse. We have our horses seen by an amazing physio every 6-8 weeks Nikki Hall Equine Sports and Rehabilitation Massage Therapist to ensure they are in tiptop condition for you.

Please read and share to raise awareness of how dangerous fireworks can be around horses! 🎆 🐎

Today i had a one off treatment for a reason I never wish to experience again.

This mare lives out happily with her other pony friends and due to foal in February. During fireworks last Saturday she became extremely stressed and unsettled which resulted in her giving birth to a stillborn foal 4 months early! After veterinary examination and thankfully no further problems with her she was able to be treated.

She’s still very needy and enjoyed her visit from me but treating this mare knowing the circumstance is heart breaking and only humans are to blame 😡

Pole work exercises are commonly used in equine training/rehabilitation programmes to build core strength and improve limb flexion.

Ground/raised poles are thought to be beneficial for:
🐴Training proprioceptive skills
🐴Improving/restoring joint range of motion
🐴Strengthening propulsive muscles
🐴Providing variety within training programmes

This popular* 2-hour webinar will review the literature and present new research related to the use and application of ground and raised poles when walking and trotting.
