Unfortunately a deceased male cat has been handed in to us. He is black and white, he is neutered and has a microchip but unfortunately the details are not up to date. Cat owners - did you know that according to Cats Protection, 115,000 cats go missing without trace every year? Today marks the start of an initiative to help that number come down as it becomes a legal requirement to have your cat microchipped. If you haven't had your cat microchipped yet, just give our reception team a call on 01434 608999 to find out how quick and easy it is and to make an appointment with one of our vets.

The medicines we prescribe to keep your pet free from worms and insects such as fleas are called parasiticides and the regulations for prescribing them have changed. This is because of concerns over the rise in resistance to these medicines, coupled with the potential impact they have on the environment.

What this means is that from now on, to prescribe, and dispense the more effective products that we prefer to use (the prescription-only products) we have to examine your animal every 12 months and discuss with you the need for these products.

If you require prescription-only parasiticides and your pet hasn’t had an examination in the last 6 months, you will need to book an appointment where we will perform an examination and discuss your pet’s needs. If you combine this examination with a vaccination or with a consultation for something else there will be no additional charge. If you simply require parasiticides then there will be a minor consultation fee, as well as a charge for the products.

We are delighted to announce that on 1st September, our vets Steph Cook and Euan Laidlaw officially became directors and shareholders of Scott Mitchell Veterinary Care Ltd. We are very proud to be maintaining and reinforcing the independence of the Practice at a time when so many vet practice owners have sold to large corporate organisations. We strongly believe that selling to City investors dilutes the passion and care that comes from being owned by local people. We are therefore firmly committed to staying independent, offering a truly caring service to you, our clients - and the animals that you love. We will continue to build and grow the Practice and provide opportunities for our amazing team to invest in SMVC. Scott Mitchell Veterinary Care, a highly respected, independent small animal and equine Practice in ‘the happiest place in the country to live’* Hexham, seeks a Small Animal Vet to join our team. You may be a new graduate or a very experienced vet – we’re just looking for that special someone!
We will happily take a flexible approach to your work/life balance, and your days can include a combination of surgery, medicine-work-ups and consultations – to some extent as per your preference. Anything from 2 to 5 days a week would be fine, ideally with an on-call contribution, as we are open and staffed 24 hours. You’d be working with a loyal and varied client base, with plenty of opportunity to work up your own cases in a professional but fun environment, and with happy and motivated colleagues.
We have a deeply embedded culture of care – for our clients, for their animals and for each other. We offer both a new graduate programme and a return-to-work programme through XLVets to support new vets or those returning after a career break. We also provide in-team mentoring and regular clinical meetings.
We have interim accommodation available to rent for anyone re-locating.

Taking care of your small pets in the heat is really important, especially when there's a lot of flies about. Flystrike, where flies lay eggs on another animal which then hatch into maggots, can be life-threatening for rabbits and guinea pigs. Check your pet daily, particularly around their back end and under their tail, and clean it if dirty. Clean your pet’s toilet areas every day and change bedding at least once a week. If your rabbit or guinea pig is affected by flystrike, please contact us immediately.

Whilst summer can be an enjoyable season for many of us, higher temperatures and summer activities can bring increased risks to pets. A previous survey by BVA found that half of vets had treated animals for heatstroke, and more than a third had treated animals for other heat-related conditions, including breathing difficulties, burnt paw pads and sunburn.

Today is World Veterinary Day, so here are some facts that you may or may not know about vets!

💙It takes at least 5 years of schooling to qualify as a veterinary surgeon.
💙There are 11 recognised veterinary schools in the UK.
💙There are over 29,000 vets working in the UK.
💙Full time vets will work an average of 42 hours a week (ours actually work more!)
💙More than 50% of UK vets work in small animal practices.
💙Vets in the UK have seen 40% more patients since the Coronavirus pandemic.

The time, effort, energy, motivation and hard work that goes into becoming a veterinary surgeon is remarkable and it takes a special type of person to make the grade! We're all looking forward to taking a little break over the Easter period, so we'd just like to remind you that on Easter Saturday we're open for appointments between 9am and 12 noon, and our out of hours team will be working to help you with emergencies and looking after inpatients round the clock on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. We said a temporary farewell to nursing assistant Joanne last week as she went on maternity leave. Her baby girl is due at the end of the month and we can't wait to meet her! Benson is looking far a Valentine! This lovely boy is 9 year old Benson, he's been visiting us today from his temporary lodgings with the RSPCA. He's had lots of love (and a big tummy rub) from us, but what Benson really, really needs is a loving permanent home with people to care for him every day, not just Valentines Day. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and we're all looking forward to having a bit of a break! Whilst we will, as always, be open 24 hours a day for emergencies, our surgery hours over the festive period are as follows:

Christmas eve: 9am-12pm
Christmas day: emergencies only
Monday 26th: emergencies only
Tuesday 27th: emergencies only
Dec 28th-30th: normal surgery hours
New Years eve: 9am-12pm
New Years day: emergencies only
Monday 2nd Jan: emergencies only

We're Recruiting - could you be the person we're looking for?

Here at our Hexham surgery, we look after animals 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and some of the most important people on our team are the night nurses who take care of our inpatients from 9.30 at night until the day shift takes over at 6.30 in the morning. We're now looking for that special someone to join the night team, working Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights every week with the rest of the week off. Attitude and commitment is more important than experience, although if you've worked with animals before that's a bonus. Full training will be given, so the first few weeks will entail working with the day team. £11.80 per hour for 27 hours a week.
