There is something special about a redemption story.
It occurs to me it’s often much like our own stories with our dogs….

Imagine the kind where the protagonist has flaws, but tries very hard.
Sets goals, dreams big, but faces adversity and challenges.
Sometimes they aren’t motivated, feel defeated or question their own abilities.
Yet, in the end, there is transformation—

Not because of God given talent and inherent skill but because they do the work.
They demonstrate grit, resilience and mental fortitude.
They learn from failures, seek help and move on quickly from defeat.
They understand they can either have regret or practice discipline, and choose the latter.

Most important to the story is the loyal partner.
One that inspires the lead character, forgives them all their imperfections;
loves them for not only for who they are, but for who they are trying to become.

The partner doesn’t care about ribbons, trophies or trials.
What matters is how they can read each others mind, the secret language they share and
all the tasks they accomplish, when no one is watching.
The partner knows the story is really about the time they spend together and their extraordinary bond,
that enriches the lead character’s life immeasurably.
The partner is the hero❤️

Planning on getting a dog, getting everything ready, leads, bedding, toys etc..is all part of the excitement🐾
preparing yourself with as much knowledge as possible prior to puppy’s arrival is equally as important.. 📖

If you already have a dog and training isn’t going to plan improving your understanding is key!

One of my favourite books, everything is explained well, easy reading for anyone wanting to understand and improve their knowledge and skills ⬇️

Award-winning behaviorist, Shay Kelly, combines his hands-on experience with years of study to produce this practical guide to training dogs and overcoming behavior problems. Bite size training 😃

Flat Work - Front Cross

The front cross is a fun basic exercise that you can do anywhere on or off lead ( if safe to do so)

It’s probably one of the first moves you learn when you start foundation work for Agility/Hoopers.

Simple exercises are the best for building voluntary engagement.

Great foundation skill for loose lead walking

Great exercise for turning away from potential triggers when out walking…😀🐾

The front cross transfers your dog from
your right side to your left or vice versa

Start off super slowly, you can use food to help guide your dog’s head in the right direction. Continue to build on your dog’s understanding by reinforcing on or just after the turn, gradually add in distance between turns.

Happy teaching 🐾

How odd we must be to our dogs?
We have two legs that make us high off the floor. This makes a hello very difficult for our dogs. And when they do go to say hello with an appropriate muzzle sniff, they are often met with people shouting at them and pushing them away.

We leave food in easy-to-reach places, kitchen worksurfaces, coffee tables, bins. Perfect places for our dogs to do what has kept them alive as a species for thousands of years. scavenging and foraging, using their nose to find food. And us weird humans shout and get angry, wonder why our dinner got stolen, and think of them as bad dogs.

We think sniffing natural things like dead animals and urine is disgusting and yet we constantly try to cover up any natural smells we have with chemicals, often toxic to the world around us. Detergents, perfumes, chemical sprays. We must smell overwhelming and pretty horrid to our canine friends.

We greet each other with a friendly smile, only touching each other when we give consent to do so. And yet we often greet our dogs by leaning over them, patting them on their head. If we greeted humans the way we greeted dogs it wouldn't be long before we had no friends and were arrested for assault.

We leave our dogs alone when we go out or put them in separate rooms. We use doors to confine them when it suits our daily needs. Then we wonder why this hyper-social animal feels distressed.

We have these rather odd things called hands. We touch and feel things with them. We use them to navigate the world, we grasp and pull, we hold and touch. Our dogs don't have hands, they have mouths. They use these to navigate the world around them and yet when they bite and chew, they are often told off.

We talk. We natter away, this jumble of noises that only people from the same place as us can understand. Some of us may be able to speak to some other humans from a few different countries but often struggle even with our own language. Dogs are fantastic communicators. Being able to communicate with other dogs all over the world. How confusing must our jibber jabber be to them? They often understand us a lot better than we understand them and when they do communicate with a bark they are labeled a nuisance.

They can only eat, sleep, have s*x, play, socialise, run, sniff, hunt, be free, be dogs! when we enable or allow it.
Our dogs are ridiculously tolerant of our weird human ways.
We owe it to them to be just as tolerant. We owe it to them to learn more about them, communicate, and teach them in ways they understand.

They do not have unrealistic expectations of us, they don’t judge or shout at us when we get things wrong. Let's try and be as tolerant and patient with them as they are with us.

Bite size training 😃
A short series of Ground work exercises You can do anywhere on or off lead.
⚠️Always take your dogs age, health & physical ability into consideration⚠️

Part 1:

This is often referred to as flat or circle work
Its a fun, useful skill to work on:
Helps with lead walking, focus etc..
A great prerequisite for sports like Agility or Hoopers.
Physical exercise for both of you without having to go far 😃⛈️☂️

The aim - building Chase’s ability to stay next to me as I circle clockwise or anti clockwise. Im looking for Chase to stay in line with me, no rushing ahead or hanging back.
She is working on the outside of my body the whole time ( much easier for beginners)

You can use food or toys as reinforcement,
I find food works best to start with, it lets me reinforce cleanly, delivering food to her mouth on the move. I can transfer to a toy when she has a good understanding of the game.

When you first start reinforcing regularly is key! Imagine you are working round the clock:

Start at 12pm
Reinforce at 3pm
Reinforce at 6pm
Reinforce at 9pm
Reinforce at 12pm

Some dogs might need more reinforcement, Work at your dogs pace..

Try to deliver the reinforcement by your side not in front of you

Gradually drop the treat from
3pm and 9pm
Eventually drop treat from 12pm and 6pm

Continue reinforcing randomly!
Build up until you can do a few circles before reinforcing. 😃
Start with small circles gradually increase to bigger circles.

❗️No correction! If it’s not working assess and adjust what YOU are doing to make it easier for your dog to understand and achieve!❗️

Keep sessions short
Have fun developing your relationship.🐾

Training shouldn’t be something you do at a set time each day, dogs should never know when it’s training time!

Training should be part of daily life “ normal.” Practice and reinforce the behaviours you want as often as possible to build strong habits

It can be easy for the behaviours you are teaching to fall by the wayside if you don’t practice and reinforce them enough ( especially with puppies)

Preparation is 🔑 to success!
Create a supportive environment

Having reinforcement readily available in strategic positions around your home, makes it easier to practice and reinforce the behaviours you want when you see them 😃

Yes, your house will smell like a dog treat factory 😂it will be worth it!

A Tale of Two Puppies - based on many true stories

Chapter 1 - In The Beginning
Once upon a time, there were two puppies, Adam and Marty. They lived with their brothers and sisters, and their mum in an old farmhouse in the countryside. Little did they know that very soon, they would have to go their separate ways and make a new life for themselves in their new forever homes.

The day finally arrived when their new families came and they then realised that they may never see each other again, so they were a little sad, but also very excited about this whole new adventure in front of them.

Before they said their goodbyes, the new family were given lots of instructions, what and when to feed them and other important details. They were also given the link to a Facebook group called Dog Training Advice and Support, where they would receive all the help and support they needed for anything that would undoubtably arise with a new puppy.

What could go wrong? Of course, both families had very responsibly, already started researching how to raise a puppy, before they went and picked them up. With so much advice out there on the Internet it wasn’t really very clear but they thought they knew what they were doing.

Puppies soon settled in once they got home, had cuddles, happily p*ed in the garden, played with the children who weren’t thrilled with the puppy teeth which hurt but it wasn’t too bad, it was only day one. By bedtime, everybody was very tired especially the puppies. They were put in their crate and soon fell asleep.

Adam’s new dad stayed with him while he was sleeping rather than leave him alone and then thought he’d check out this Facebook group and saw that you have to read the guides first. “Oh my goodness that’s a lot of reading, good job I’ve got nothing to do while I’m watching over this puppy on his first night.” He made a cup of tea and got stuck into reading the guides. He found them very interesting but he skimmed over them and thought he would go back later and read them properly. He wanted to read about puppies and he was delighted to find an article called ‘puppies first night’ even more so to read that he was doing the right thing by not leaving puppy alone. He’d just finished reading when puppy woke up and realised he needed to p*e. His new dad got him out into the garden and then they came in and had a cuddle by which time they were both so tired that they fell asleep together on the sofa until next thing they knew it was the morning.

Meanwhile at Marty‘s house he fell asleep in his crate in the kitchen and everyone went upstairs to bed, tired but happy and excited for the next day’s adventures with their new puppy. Apart from Marty who slept for an hour tops and then woke up and found he was all alone. It was dark, his brothers and sisters weren’t there, he was scared and desperate for a p*e. He cried, he cried some more, this time, a little louder. He hadn’t had a lot of practice at barking, but he barked to see if anyone would hear him. Upstairs the family were all awake, listening to him, just listening, not doing anything because they read somewhere on the Internet, watched the videos on TikTok - do not spoil your puppy, put him in his crate. He’s going to cry, but let him, he’s got to get used to it. They felt a slight tinge of sadness, listening to him but they knew they were doing the right thing. Eventually Marty fell asleep, in his p*e soaked bed, exhausted, scared, his brain saturated with stress hormones and his new family grabbed another 45 minutes of sleep until a distressed puppy woke again.
To be continued

Fab post ⬇️

When a trainer asks you to speak to your vet or a veterinary behaviorist about whether your dog may be a candidate for anti-anxiety medications:

Our goal is not to sedate your dog.

Our goal is not to turn your dog into a zombie.

Our goal is not to remove your dog’s personality.

Instead, our goal is to give you more tools to help your dog cope with the world. Our goal is to give your dog a better chance at recovering from sometimes pretty severe behavior problems.

There is still a HUGE stigma around giving dogs behavior medications, but the truth is that much like some humans, some dogs are born with brains that literally cannot create the chemicals needed to cope with life’s stressors. And some dogs go through such trauma that their brains change to the point where they also cannot cope.

If you went to a medical professional and they diagnosed your dog with diabetes, would you refuse insulin because maybe a diet change might work? All the while knowing your dog was physically unwell?

If your dog broke their leg, and you brought them to the vet, and they prescribed painkillers while your dog healed, would you withhold those painkillers because you feel like your dog should be able to heal without them?

Honestly, the chronic stress that sometimes effects our dogs can seriously impact their quality of life, and this stigma of “anxiety meds bad” is doing a lot of harm.

And if you’ve tried meds before but didn’t like how your dog was when they were on them? Have a dialogue with your vet, or seek out the help of a boarded veterinary behaviorist! There are a multitude of options available out there, and like in humans, some meds work better for certain individuals than others! Don’t let one bad experience sour you on all anti-anxiety medications, that’s like throwing the baby out with the bath water!

The last thing I wanted to say:

If you try anxiety medications for your dog you have NOT failed them. You are not “giving up”. It doesn’t make you, or your dog, weak, or bad, or less than. In fact, you’re a rock star advocate for your dog, and I applaud you for doing right by them.

Some dogs can’t produce enough of their own serotonin; for those dogs, store bought is often best ❤️

Great advice here… a dog does not need to smell your hands, they can smell you coming from a mile or further 😃

Great advice here… a dog does not need to smell your hands, they can smell you coming from a mile or further 😃

Always let a dog come to you. 🐕

You can invite the dog over. If they don't come to you they want to be left alone.✔️

Don't reach out your hand to a scared dog.🖐🚫 That will usually make the dog more uncomfortable and can lead to getting bitten.

Neutering does not solve all problems! It’s not a quick fix, most of the dogs I work with are struggling to cope simply because their needs are not being met! lack of breed understanding, lack of empathy, pure boredom, lack of physical and mental stimulation, and mostly due to ridiculous unreasonable human expectations.. 🤬🥲
