Next up we have the handsome boy Casper to reach an ideal body condition score this week. Again Casper’s owners had been trying to get some weight off him and things had come to a bit of static point so we introduced Royal Canin Satiety food which got the pounds coming off again without the hunger and 27 weeks from starting his weight loss journey Casper has lost 7.8kg (19.5%) of his bodyweight! Amazing work Casper and his dedicated owners. Check out his ‘professional’ photos sent in from his mum from his before and after photos at the groomers! đŸ„°

We have had a great week for weight clinics patients this week, with many reaching their target weights. First up is Lottie. When I met Lottie her owners had already been trying to get some weight off her but things had come to a bit of a standstill. With the right advice and support and the use of Royal Canin Satiety diet, and here she is, 2.1kg lighter (12.7% loss). Well done to Lottie and her owners, hard work pays off!
(We unfortunately don’t have a before photo of Lottie, check out the comments for her mum’s photo.)

Consulting nurses/specialist clinic nurses

Just like human nurses, vet nurses perform consultations for routine procedures such as a**l gland expressions, second vaccines, wound checks and suture removals, long term monthly injections to name just a few.
Vet nurses will often run more specialised clinics and we have many of these on offer at GLV with our nurse, Becky. These include weight clinics, mobility clinics, senior clinics, diabetic clinics and more.
Here you can see our nurse consult room set up ready to welcome a combined weight and mobility patient.

Many of you may have already met our final member of our nursing ‘meet the team’ as Becky joined GLV in October 2023 as an experienced consulting nurse. Her real passions are diabetes, weight management and senior healthcare and she offers a range of specialised nurse clinics in practice. When not at work, Becky likes to spend time with friends and family and enjoys walking her Labrador, Russell, especially in the Lake District. She also enjoys cooking, baking (regularly feeding the team) and watching rugby.

Theatre/surgical scrub nurses

Vet nurses also regularly scrub in to assist with procedures when the vets need an extra pair of hands such as during complex orthopaedic procedures. Here you can see our head nurse, Rachael, assisting Toby with a TPLO cruciate surgery.
Vet nurses are also allowed to perform minor surgical procedures of their own under the RCVS Schedule 3 procedures, just as human nurses would. These include toe and tail amputations, stitch ups etc.

Sterile services technician

Our nursing team as well as delivering hands on nursing care are responsible for the processing of instrumentation and equipment that has been used during surgery.
This involves cleaning by hand a huge range of equipment from general instruments to complex orthopaedic equipment, delicate opthalmic instruments and the very tricky laparoscopic spay kit. Included in this part of our day is the operating of machinery such as the ultrasonic baths and our autoclaves.
Here you can see our nursing assistant, Chloe, wrapping and packing a surgical kit ready for sterilisation in an autoclave.

Management roles/MEET THE TEAM

Some nurses choose at some stage in their career to progress onto managerial roles rather than clinical. Our vet nurse Chloe has a combined role as our Clincical Manager meaning she deals with all aspects of anything clinically related and is the go between from our management team and nursing and vet teams.
Chloe joined the GLV team in 2009 as a student vet nurse (SVN) qualifying as an RVN in 2017 and over more recent years has worked her way to Clinical Manager. She enjoys being able to assist her colleagues with any problems, small or large! Chloe’s free time is taken up with looking after her 3 year old little boy, Freddie along with working her beloved three spaniels on local shoots and helping her friends with their small holding.

Clinical coaching or mentoring

Some nurses choose to undertake extra training to gain a clinical coach qualification.
A clinical coach is an RVN or MRCVS who agrees to mentor a student during their training. It involves teaching, or organising teaching, of the practical clinical skills a student must learn. These skills are then recorded in the students’ online log.
Clinical coaches, after their initial training, have to attend an annual standardisation to keep their skills up to date.
Qualified nurses are often also responsible for mentoring animal nursing assistants (ACAs) and veterinary care assistants (VCAs).
Here are our clinical coaches, Rachael, Becky and Izzi.

Vet Nurse Awareness Month

Did you know that the BVNA (British Veterinary Nursing Association) is tirelessly campaigning to gain regulation and to protect the Title 'Veterinary Nurse'?

You might ask why do we need to protect the title? Why is it important? Did you know that in the UK anyone can call themselves a Veterinary Nurse - even if they are not trained, or qualified. This wouldn’t happen with any other qualification, you can’t work in a hospital and call yourself a Doctor or in a vets and call yourself a Veterinary Surgeon.

Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs) undergo a huge amount of intense training and study to achieve their degrees and certificates, before they are qualified and then entered onto the RCVS Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons register. Once qualified they have to undergo Continued Professional Development (CPD) every year and abide by the rules of the Code of Professional conduct (just like Veterinary Surgeons). RVNs often undertake further training and qualifications to further enhance their skills and knowledge.
