Pete presented as an emergency out-of-hours with a high temperature and an extremely swollen and painful left hindlimb. He was treated with anti-inflammatories and antibiotics.
Pete made good progress initially but then relapsed and attended the clinic at Lanark for further investigation. The vets looked for a source of infection using x-rays and ultrasound, as well as sampling different synovial structures within the limb.
No puncture wound could be detected but unfortunately it appeared the infection was starting to affect his Tarsal sheath, a synovial structure protecting the ligaments around the hock. Surgical flushing of the structure was the recommended treatment but was not an option for Pete. Despite our concerns for his prognosis, Pete went against the odds and slowly made a good recovery at home over several weeks.
Vet Clare says, 'The dedication of Pete's owners was above and beyond and I'm so pleased at the outcome. Pete will forever be a special patient.'

This foal was born in the summer and sadly suffered from Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, also known as Dummy Foal syndrome. Upon arrival, the foal was unable to stand up or nurse by herself and was diagnosed with many other complications associated with the lack of oxygen to her organs. At our hospital, Vet Mercedes and our dedicated nursing team cared for the foal until she was able to stand and nurse by herself. Today, we are happy to say that she is a healthy foal, and we are all very impressed with her recovery! โจ

With the hotter weather we've been experiencing recently, we'd like to remind you about the ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ป๐ด๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ต๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ ๐ฒ๐
๐ต๐ฎ๐๐๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป for your horse.
Heat exhaustion can be a very serious condition and can occur if the horse is exposed/exercised in very hot or humid conditions and is often also suffering from dehydration. Signs of heat exhaustion may include the signs of dehydration and more:
โ๏ธ Fast, shallow breathing (panting)
โ๏ธ Nostril flaring
โ๏ธ Increased rectal temperature
โ๏ธ An irregular heartbeat
โ๏ธ Decreased appetite and thirst
โ๏ธ Slow recovery after exercise
โ๏ธ Muscle spasms
โ๏ธ Reduced performance
If your horse is showing signs of heat related illness ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ ๐๐ ๐ผ๐ป ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฑ๐ฑ๐ฑ ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐ถ๐บ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐น๐, move them into the shade and start to cool the horse by continuously applying cold water all over the horseโs body until help arrives.
If not quickly and carefully managed, a horse suffering with heat exhaustion can progress to develop life threatening heat stroke. This may lead to the horse becoming unsteady on their feet (ataxia) and/or collapsing.๏ธ
This horse is loving being cooled down with the hose! ๐

We've been Houston Farm Riding School's equine vets for many years, treating their 54 horses on yard. Houston Farm Riding School is a family run, licensed riding school approved by both the British Horse Society (BHS) and Association of British Riding Schools (ABRS). They offer riding lessons for all ages, including special needs and disabled children, many of whom have ridden there for years. The school has also provided work experience to Oatridge college students and equine experience for many children and adults. The lady behind it all is Elizabath Comrie, AKA Mrs Comrie, who has been at the farm for 60 years this year!
We went behind the scenes to show you the place ourselves! ๐ฅ
โ ๏ธ NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED!! โ ๏ธ
This horse had a soft fluid lump on his chest a few days ago. It hadn't gone away so we were sent out to look at it...
This was probably the result of some sort of blunt force trauma, such as a kick from another horse or a collision with a fence post.
One of our patients, Oats, certainly enjoyed a little time outside ๐
