This May, we're celebrating our nurses, who are the unsung heroes behind the scenes. With the help of the alphabet, we're going to be shining a spotlight on the incredible work our nurses do!

In equine practice it is an anaesthetist in the hospital that monitors and maintains anaesthesia. However, the nursing team play a vital role in field anaesthesia, monitoring the anaesthetised patient with direction from the Vet. Nurses also assist anaesthetists in preparing the horse for surgery and induction in the hospital setting, ensuring the smooth running and handover from theatre to yard and vice versa.

Our nursing team assist our Vets in providing a comprehensive veterinary service for horse breeders. This involves looking after the precious stores of semen in the clinic all year round, admitting broodmares sometimes with foals at foot, their daily care and assisting with reproduction scans. Once the mare has ovulated it is the nurse that ensures all equipment is on standby, selecting the correct frozen semen straws for thawing and assisting the vets in administering this precious cargo.

Katie graduated from Oatridge and has an AC in Equine Care. Before joining our team, she worked in the hospitality industry, with experience as a bar and restaurant supervisor.

She is a novice dressage rider and has owned horses for 10 years, alongside working on a few yards and being part of Pony Club. At home, she has four horses, Ziggy, Jewel, Cooper and Bentley. In her spare time she enjoys going to the gym, horse riding and quad biking.

As we welcome spring, it’s important to be aware of the increased risk of laminitis.

If you suspect laminitis in your horse, it's crucial to consult with your vet promptly for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Early intervention can significantly improve the chances of a positive outcome.

𝘼𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙡'𝙨 𝙎𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮: 𝙍𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙜𝙣𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙏𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙃𝙮𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙚𝙢𝙞𝙖

Did you know that pain, illness or changes to routine or companionship can cause donkeys to become inappetent which poses a significant risk to your donkey’s health?

If donkeys do not eat properly they are prone to a condition called hyperlipemia; an increased level of fat in their blood. If not treated quickly, it can progress and cause severe liver disease and even death in some cases.

Angel is a 20-year-old donkey mare whose owner quickly noticed when Angel started taking herself away from the herd and becoming inappetent.

Road vet Sophie attended Angel and diagnosed colic. Due to her inappetence Sophie acted quickly to prevent hyperlipemia, which included treating Angel with glucose, fluids, Readybrek (multipurpose, we know!), and electrolytes in addition to treating her colic signs.

Thanks to Angel’s owner’s prompt attention and diligent aftercare Angel is feeling much better!

Donkeys are very stoic and do not often show signs of illness until they are very sick. If you notice your donkey is inappetent or behaving differently, please contact us immediately📞

🐴 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗗𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗱, 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆.

Donald initially presented with a large pelvic impaction. Diagnostics were carried out and it was decided intensive care and treatment from the hospital was needed

As Donald's condition progressed, he developed peritonitis, a common complication stemming from colic cases. Our dedicated team promptly adjusted his intensive care plan to address this new diagnosis, incorporating antibiotics and anti-inflammatories alongside ongoing supportive care.

Donald's progress was remarkable, and after receiving intensive care and treatment, Donald was eventually cleared to return home, transitioning to oral antibiotics and anti-inflammatories.

At his follow-up appointment, Donald received the all-clear to resume his normal activities, including returning to ridden work!

🐴🩺 𝙀𝙙𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙙’𝙨 𝙎𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮

Edward’s owner contacted us in Autumn 2023 to ask about a swelling she had seen under his abdomen and over his sheath.

Vet Sophie examined him and took bloods, and diagnosed ventral oedema from hypoalbuminaemia (swelling caused by low proteins in his blood). Edward under went blood and faecal examinations which showed no cause for low proteins so Sophie and Judy performed a detailed ultrasound examination of Edward’s internal organs to find the cause.

The scan showed increased thickness of the walls of Edward’s intestines and Edward started a course of oral steroids to treat the inflammation.

After the course, Edward was carefully weaned off the steroids, and has made a full recovery! Sophie was glad to see him happy and healthy this week! Well done Edward!

🎂🏇 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝟮𝟵𝘁𝗵 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗖𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲!

Yesterday, our vet Judy’s pony, Crunchie, celebrated her 29th birthday. At Clyde Vets, we love our golden oldies, however they do require more care than their younger companions.

As horses get older they require annual health checks and dental check ups to ensure they are kept happy and healthy. At a health check you can expect the vet to body condition score your horse and discuss diet, listen to the heart and lungs, blood sample to check major organs and red and white blood cell count and a worm egg count.

Some diseases are at higher risk in the older horse such as cushings disease, laminitis and worsening of pre existing conditions such as equine asthma or arthritis.

Normal signs of aging can include grey hairs, loss of muscle tone and drooping of the lower lip. Abnormal signs can include weight loss, loss of appetite, stiffness and changes in the hair coat- if you notice any of these it may be time to get your horse a check up📞

🐎👨‍⚕️ Huge congratulations to James McStay, who passed his final exams in December to become a Qualified Equine Veterinary Nurse.

The Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (Equine) is a two year course that is regulated by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). It involves 600 hours of study, supported by 1800 hours of practical work in the Practice.

James has been with us for 8 years, starting as a part time groom, and working tirelessly to get where he is now. He has spent the past 2 years travelling up and down to Liphook Equine Hospital to complete his nursing course, at the same time as working full time plus on call. He also managed to still fit in riding and caring for his own horse, and fitting in the occasional show🏇

We are so proud of how well James has done and thrilled to be able to add another RVN to our team, alongside our head nurse Emma. James works so hard to ensure your horses receive the best level of care whilst here in the hospital and will be putting his new skills and responsibilities to good use to help with the smooth running of the hospital.

Today is the day... the Lanarkshire District Young Farmers Talent Spot competition. Six clubs from the district are gearing up to compete for the prestigious title of Lanarkshire Talentspot Champions 2024!

Good luck to all clubs participating, and an extra special cheer to Lanark Young Farmers, where our very own Equine Nursing Assistant, Kalise, is competing! A big shoutout also goes to our Veterinary Receptionist, Laura Darroch, for her support in helping Lanark YFC prepare for this event👏👏

🐴💤 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙 𝙎𝙡𝙚𝙚𝙥 𝘿𝙖𝙮

Did you know, horses have their own unique sleep rhythm? Typically requiring three to four hours of sleep each day, they divide their rest into short bouts.

👉 Unlike humans, horses can do slow wave sleep while standing, thanks to the fascinating "stay apparatus." This adaptation allows them to lock their limbs in place, staying alert to potential threats even during rest. Their finely tuned survival instincts ensure a swift response to any environment changes.

😴 While horses can't have and maintain REM sleep while standing, they find a cozy spot to lie down for this essential part of their rest. Usually comprising 20-30 minutes of their total sleep in a 24-hour period.

Jamie has been awarded a Nettie Recognition Award for going truly above and beyond. His extraordinary commitment to the team shone during the festive period, when he covered multiple additional days and nights for out-of-hours services.

Despite personal sacrifices and cancelled festive plans, Jamie worked tirelessly, ensuring our out-of-hours service ran seamlessly.

🐴 𝙋𝙚𝙩𝙚'𝙨 𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙟𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙮!

Pete presented as an emergency out-of-hours with a high temperature and an extremely swollen and painful left hindlimb. He was treated with anti-inflammatories and antibiotics.

Pete made good progress initially but then relapsed and attended the clinic at Lanark for further investigation. The vets looked for a source of infection using x-rays and ultrasound, as well as sampling different synovial structures within the limb.

No puncture wound could be detected but unfortunately it appeared the infection was starting to affect his Tarsal sheath, a synovial structure protecting the ligaments around the hock. Surgical flushing of the structure was the recommended treatment but was not an option for Pete. Despite our concerns for his prognosis, Pete went against the odds and slowly made a good recovery at home over several weeks.

Vet Clare says, 'The dedication of Pete's owners was above and beyond and I'm so pleased at the outcome. Pete will forever be a special patient.'
