7 days in the biz:

🐶 If you’re wondering where the doggos have gone and why my feed’s become a bit, well, PERSON-heavy recently, it’s not because I’ve been on holiday (although it definitely felt like one!), it’s because I spent last week in Lisbon on a business retreat. Here’s just a taste of what happened:

🥅 I learned to set goals that were so much bigger and more audacious than any I had set before.

💪 I confronted some of my limiting beliefs and discovered how those have affected how I do business. I may unpack those for you another day but they left me feeling vulnerable so I’m going to need to feel strong before sharing!

🤸‍♀️I met the most inspiring, supportive, wonderful group of women entrepreneurs. We had such an obvious connection between us that our inspirational coaches and have decided to continue our work together as a group.

💃I’ve already signed up to work directly with one of them, the fabulous who I just know is going to keep me on track with my email marketing. And I have no doubt I’m going to end up working with others.

🪩 One of them is coming to stay with me in a couple of weeks, the wonderful .rangnekar from Kentucky, who is coming to scope out London as a potential place to live.

🌱 So to any female entrepreneurs out there who are feeling isolated and lonely, I’ve learned that’s not how it needs to be. Find your tribe and you will feel heard and inspired, be helped to grow and be held accountable.

🏋️‍♀️ When women support women we can do anything.

One of the innumerable pleasures of the business retreat I’ve just attended in Lisbon was being able to see the look on our mentors’ faces when I handed and their COACH sweatshirts in person.

I’d sum up that look as joy. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Ok so this week’s The Week That Was is a naked attempt to keep the dream alive with a few holiday snaps.

🏖️ I took my first full week off work in over a year and let the sounds and sights of Ibiza work their magic. It was so good to recharge the 🪫 and just BE for a bit.

📷 I’ve loved receiving some of YOUR holiday snaps. Here’s one of our House of Dog sweatshirts spotted on holibobs in the Highlands.

🐶 And of course when you’re a dog every day is a holiday. For the last six weeks every sofa in the house has held a lounging pooch, while every walk has been like a scene from the Famous Five. At the end of last week the last of our holidogs headed home. We will miss them, although it is quite nice to have the sofas back 😉…

Now that we’re into September and what feels very much like autumn how are you keeping the dream alive? If it involves boring everyone with your holiday pix then so much the better!

Sorry for breaking another dubious record - it’s the latest week that was that ever there was!

🛫 I guess that’s been because we’ve been in the holiday spirit round here. Hotel HOD has been full of your lovely dogs, enjoying their holibobs with us while you’ve been away on yours. New walks have been discovered and adventures had.

🇨🇭 Meanwhile, Mags and I kept the promise I’d made during the £10k in 10 Days Challenge to go and visit my brother in Geneva and finally meet his new little girl Evelyn.

👶🏻 Her big brother Theo has nicknamed her Mimos and it’s stuck. We think she’s a total 🍑. But golly I’d forgotten how having little ones is 7 parts joy to 3 parts total chaos!

🏊We also had a wonderful time swimming in Lake Geneva and messing about on Captain Nick’s little boat.

Wishing you a wonderful Bank Holiday weekend, especially if you’ve venturing out to Carnival. Keep that holiday spirit alive!

The week that was:

📆 How was yours? I somehow never get round to these weekly updates till Tuesdays so I think I finally need to accept that my week runs from Tuesday to Monday 😆…

Here’s a taste of what happened:

🍄‍🟫 Pic 1) We had a brilliant day out on Portobello - our last Saturday out there till the end of the month.

🧡 Pix 2 & 3) It’s always such a joy and a privilege to meet people at the very moment they fall in love with a particular sweatshirt. Lorraine tried one on and then rushed home to tell her husband she’d found her perfect Birthday 🎁 - anyone else relate 😂?!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Pic 4) We’ve been super busy in the back end of the website, doing SEO and setting up a new reviews app. Can’t tell you how much of a thrill it was to receive our first two verified 5 star reviews! I know we all get bombarded with requests these days so to those of you who took the time out of their day to let us know how you feel, thank you 🙏🏻 from the bottom of my ❤️.

🌞 Pix 5-8) Phewee what a scorcher! While the dogs spent most of the week in the river poor Gerson spent 5 days up a ladder, painting the front of the 🏠 so now HOD HQ looks super smart and welcoming again. Thank you - you are a total superstar 💫.

The week that was:

☀️I don’t know about you, but I feel like it’s only last week that summer finally started in earnest - hallelujah 🙌!

💦 Of course that’s meant seeking out water whenever we can coz cool doggins = happy doggins.

📺 We may have done a little happy dance when we found out that one of our WOOF sweatshirts is going to appear on the telly. Mum’s the word on the specifics at this stage, but we can reveal that it will be worn by the wonderful .

💃 I took Mags to her first proper festival - the fabulous . It’s the friendliest festival out there, with the absolute best music, so if you love house and disco and want to make 100 new friends in a weekend I urge you to put the last weekend of July in your diary for next year!

🪩 Spotted a few of our sweats out and about at Campo - a couple were even on the dance floor before things got too hot in there…

The week that was:

was a holiday ✈️ week for lots of you, which meant that your doggins came to us for theirs.

🏖️ Pix 1 & 2) We loved having Benji and Tigger for their hols. They went everywhere with us, even on a date.

🤗 Pix 3 & 4) We welcomed two new members to the club - the delectable Cotton and Coco.

🦴 Pic 5) It was another busy week on Portobello, where our yak chews and chewroots were particularly popular with the pups.

📸 Pics 6 & 7) We received our biggest drop of sweatshirts to date and had a mammoth photography session only to find that they flew out as quickly as we could photograph them! It makes us so happy 😁 to see you looking so happy in yours.

🧡 I’ve been in a continuous state of surprise and delight at how much you seem to love our sweatshirts. They’ve been flying off the stall on Portobello, as well as online, where it’s been great to see you getting creative with your slogans. 🌱 With things FINALLY drying out grass seed season is unfortunately upon us again. These spiky b***gers are the ones to watch out for. Checking your dog’s paws after they’ve been in long grass could save them considerable discomfort and you an expensive trip to the vet.

🎾 I got to play hooky once or twice and spend some time with my girl.

I hope you’re able to play hooky too - it’s what summers are for. And I don’t want to jinx it, but have you checked out the forecast? Perhaps a proper ummer is finally on its way 🤞🏻?!

Our favourite Jack Russell Robin has been powered by our treats and toys ever since we opened our online shop 2.5 years ago. Introducing a new regular feature: Woof of the Week!

This week our award for Woof Of The Week goes to Friday, our favourite miniature Schnauzer with the heart of a lion.

She’s always been epileptic but hadn’t had a fit for years. Sadly, a recent operation triggered her epilepsy again. The anti-fitting meds she was prescribed then gave her severe side effects.

But, after some close attention and lots of love she’s bounced back to full health like the trooper she is.

Here she is is just two weeks after the crisis, full of the joys of life again. We couldn’t be more delighted. Run Friday run!

£10k in 10 Days Challenge contd!

Here are some of the things I did to raise extra funds:

👉🏻 Committed to doubling my days on Portobello market - up from 2 days to 4 a week.

👉🏻 Took on new service clients.

👉🏻 Sold through stories, running an online promotion for our bestselling sweatshirts.

👉🏻 Chased unpaid invoices.

👉🏻 Put on a VIP photo shoot so our clients could get their paws on professional photos of their dogs at a bargain price.

👉🏻 Gave a sweatshirt to a friend who’s an influencer in the hope she would promote it to her followers.

Here’s what I didn’t do:

❌ Obsess over exactly how much money was going to come from where. I left room for happy happenstance and definitely received it in the form of a long, unexpected booking.

❌ Force things - if they couldn’t come to fruition during the 10 day challenge I kept faith that they would do so in their own time.

❌ Tally up my total every day. I only allowed myself to do it once, after 5 days, and when I could see I was on track I allowed myself to unclench a bit!

The one thing I did that I definitely won’t do next time was allow fear to paralyse me. After a single day of zero revenue I embarrassed myself in front of my Mastermind group by weeping with frustration and self pity that I had set myself up to fail… They didn’t believe me and encouraged me gently but firmly to keep going.

✨ You may have guessed by now that I made it in the end. £10k in 10 days. I’m proud of myself for sticking with it. And full of gratitude, especially to my team and for making it possible for me to spin extra plates because I’m always sure that they have such a firm hold on theirs.

If you’ve made it to the end of this little essay it’s probably because it’s piqued your interest. All I can say is, if it’s possible for me it’s possible for you too. So maybe take this as a small nudge to ask for that raise, start that side hustle you’ve always wanted to do. or commit to taking your business to the next level, because if I can do it you can too!

We Brits just don’t talk about money do we? Feel free to scroll on past if you find talking about it icky, because that’s what last week was all about. But I want to share this story in case it tickles your interest or even inspires you to take your own action.

First off, mahoosive props to whose brilliant book We Should All Be Millionaires has taken me about 2 months of snatched moments to read. Whether you have a 9 to 5 job, a career, a side hustle or your own small business I can’t recommend it highly enough for its practical take on how to get there, as well as its sheer joy. She shows you that making money isn’t dirty and doesn’t have to be solely about hard graft and sacrifice.

One of the action steps she advocates is challenging yourself to make £10k in 10 days. I love a challenge so that part really resonated with me. It felt audacious and scary but not impossible. It felt like it could be a game-changer on so many levels. Most of all in terms of my own confidence and self belief.

Here’s what she says.

1. Commit to the challenge. If £10k isn’t possible for you make the goal a realistic one and then add on an extra 30%.
2. Commit to a start date
3. Brainstorm what you’re going to do to make the extra money.
4. Write down what you’re going to do with such a life-changing sum at the end of it.
5. GO for it!

If you want to know how the challenge went, I’m going to have to do a separate post with the results because I’ve reached my world limit. Part 2 coming up!
