First week after the holidays..👇

It is always a bit busier as we need to catch up with a fair amount of work. However, working with dogs makes it a lot easier.

We accomplished a great deal this week, from haircuts to daycare and even embarking on new equipment building adventures. The third grooming table has arrived, and we successfully assembled it without any issues, which is a significant achievement for us.

Our business is thriving, and we returned from our holidays with heads full of ideas. We can’t wait to share them all with you, so stay tuned and follow us for more updates!

🏋️‍♂️Overexercising your puppy.
When you take your puppy for short walks, observe them during them, and ensure they get plenty of rest.

🍔Giving your puppy dinner leftovers.
It is ok to give your puppy some plane human food scraps away from the dinner table, monitoring the amount of it and moderating when necessary.

✂️Delaying your puppy’s first visit to the groomer.
It is perfectly fine to book their first grooming visit just after they are allowed to socialise with other dogs. That goes for all dogs, even short and smooth hair breeds. When you bring your puppy to us early, grooming becomes a part of their routine, and they enjoy being pampered. All the dogs that have come through our door as little pups are the perfect example.

Hello, we are Anna & Kasia and we have been happy owners of Dog World Grooming for the past three years.

So much has happened since the day we decided to open a grooming salon together...

40 years of friendship and who would have thought we would be here now running a business and doing what we love together. All while being surrounded by cute floofs all day long.

To think that a while ago, Dog World Grooming was just a dream and now it's our reality.

We opened our business reight at the start of the pandemic for one day and went into lockdown. Two and a half months later we reopened and as a new business we didnt qualify for any help. Tough, we thought but being hard working and independent we were determined to make it work. And we did!

As business owners it can be easy to fall into the trap of wanting more - faster growth, more clients, more money... But when you take a minute to look where you came from, it's humbling to see how much has changed and how far you've come. There is always so much to be proud of and grateful for.

Do you remember how difficult it was to cut your first dog’s nails for the first time?

If we only knew the tricks, we know now! It would make our lives a lot easier.

We learned how to cut dogs’ nails during the grooming course and started by cutting small nail tips. Trimming it bit by bit prevented us from cutting too much and causing the nail to bleed. Remember to continually assess the nail from each side before you start cutting it.

It is easier to spot the vein that runs through the nail in light-coloured nails than in dark ones. But cutting small pieces each time also works well with dark-coloured nails.

We opened our salon in the middle of the pandemic and quickly realised that many people in our neighbourhood had become new dog owners.

Knowing how important it is to introduce your dog to grooming as soon as possible, we had created our puppy package. It is inclusive of two puppy grooms and a full groom for the price of two puppy grooms.

The idea behind the package was to slowly introduce a puppy to the grooming process, gently expose them to all the processes involved, and create a bond between us and the new little doggies. Every new pup has their first visit tailored to their individual needs.

Introducing the new surroundings and different sounds, puppy shampoo bath, gentle blow-drying, brushing, eyes and ears cleaning, paw tiding up, and nail clipping is essential and helps your puppy become comfortable and confident during grooming.😊🐶

The package turned out to be a great success. Most of the doggies that started with it are still with us, and they grew up to be calm and happy dogs who enjoy being pampered. 🛁🐩

What is your favourite breed to groom?

When we were discussing ideas for Dog World Grooming at the early stages of our venture we decided that we would welcome dogs from all walks of life. The ones with short or long hair, young and elderly.

We also wanted to create a place where dogs can feel relaxed and have a snooze if they need to.

As this works for us, it may be different for you. And that’s ok:)

What helped us to build a successful business?

Patience, Practice, Perseverance

We have shown up every day since the moment we got the keys to our salon. The most challenging days were those we didn’t have any clients booked. It was sometimes daunting and disheartening, but we didn’t give up. Growing a business takes time, and it’s true when they say that patience is a virtue.

You will most likely succeed if you show up consistently and have good foundations and a vision for your business.

We have studied dog grooming and learned tricks from some of the best people in our industry. We’ve watched thousands of grooming videos to extend our knowledge even further. It’s essential to get out of your comfort zone as that’s the moment when you learn the most. And maybe practice doesn’t make perfect, but it makes it much better.

To become a confident groomer, you need time to polish your skills. It means doing the same thing repeatedly, being ready to make mistakes, and being open to learning from others.

Establishing a timeline and short-term and long-term goals has been crucial for us to stay on track. Over the last three years, we’ve had moments of doubt, and at times we feared failure. Luckily, we can rely on each other, and we are good at picking each other up.

If you keep believing in yourself and surround yourself with people who have your best interest at heart, you can make magic happen.

It always seems impossible until it’s done.

Why is having a (business) plan important?

We started our business without a solid business plan. We wanted to fill our salon with furry clients as fast as possible, having to remain closed for some time due to the pandemic.

We quickly realised we were attracting clients we wanted to avoid working with in the long run. We wanted people who would like to make regular visits and book them immediately when picking up their pup after the groom. We wanted clients who would understand the importance of regular grooming and who would consider our advice. We tried to run a sustainable business with as few cancelled appointments as possible.

We needed a plan!
And so we developed a business and a practical plan to achieve what we wanted.

A good plan helps you to set and achieve appropriate goals and use your time more efficiently. You can analyse your objectives and readjust how you want to reach them, breaking your bigger goals into smaller pieces. Planning makes you accountable, reveals your strengths and weaknesses, and increases confidence and certainty. It reduces risk, encourages your creativity and improves your decision-making. But most importantly, it brings you more peace of mind.

Can we tell you a secret?

When you start socialising your dog with other dogs and humans as early as possible you'll have a well behaved and friendly pup on your hands.

A doggy daycare is a great place to start. You can leave your dog for as little as a couple of hours and then slowly extend the time that your pup spends without you.

It is important for your dog to get used to being left alone or without you in different environments such as your home, vet clinic, grooming salon, your friends house. You don't want to have a barking and anxious doggie every time you leave the room.

Hello, Anna here:
My goal was to split a grooming day into two sessions, morning and afternoon. We all know that timing is crucial for appointment-based businesses and that when one client is late, you'll finish late that day. I witnessed that when clients drop their pups off at 9am and then 2pm at a salon where I did my grooming course a while back now, and I remember it worked well. It makes the work day more organised because even if someone runs late, you have a different pup there ready to be groomed.

I was super stoked when we finally could start organising our clients into sessions. It took us 2.5 years because we wanted to get to know the dogs and for them to feel comfy at our salon. It's working well, and soon, and we will be able to take on more puppies! And who wouldn't want that??

What would you have done differently if you had a chance to do it all over again?Being your own boss gives you a lot of freedom and flexibility, so we would have grabbed that opportunity earlier if we had a chance. If we can do it, so can you! We find creating video content easier now than at the beginning of the year. Given another go, we would have practised creating more videos from the get-go. You gain more confidence the more you practice.At the start of our venture, we were stressing out about being new business owners and not being experienced enough. One Christmas evening a few years ago, we sat together with a bottle of gin to tell stories about what’d been happening in our lives. How did I overcome the fear of trimming dogs’ faces with scissors?💡Anna and I decided to start our own grooming business when my life turned upside down, and I needed a new project to concentrate on and forget about the pain I was going through. I feared starting something from scratch and relocating back to Europe from Australia, where I’d been living for the last decade. 🐕I decided to volunteer at a grooming studio near my home in Melbourne, and I was lucky enough to secure a spot. Everyone was young and eager to show me everything I needed to know. I just turned 42, and I thought that I would never be able to hold scissors in my hand as well other groomers did. ✂️When I finaly returned to London I signed myself up for a grooming course at a Dog Grooming Studio in Wandsworth. As I was confident when trimming the entire body of a dog, I still was not comfortable when it came to cutting around their eyes and snouts. 👩‍💼My favouri teacher was my business partner Anna. She was patient with me, and even when I was having doubts, she always believed in me and my perseverance. I knew that I needed to practice and practice some more. And so, I did that. I practised under Anna’s watchful eye because I wanted to be better and contribute more to our business. Just look at me go on that video! I wanted to make Anna proud, but I wanted to make myself proud most of all.🏅Today I can proudly say that I have grown to be a confident groomer, but this is not the endpoint. 💚Sometimes we try hard to record a perfect video, match it with perfect audio and throw a perfect filter on top. And the truth is that nothing is perfect, and everything is evolving. 💛This clip is of us trying to record a reel, which didn’t work out, but we kept the videos. While making this completion, the two of us laughed so hard, remembering how much fun we had during filming. 💙We need to have a crack at something and allow ourselves to make mistakes to learn and grow regardless of our field of expertise and interest. We all feel self-conscious about something, experience the imposter syndrome and fear being judged. Why are we worrying about what others think or say about us?
