We had a black and white male cat brought into our practice on Wednesday evening after being found in Pylers Way, Lydney. He’s very friendly but sadly has no microchip so we are unable to find an owner.
If you believe he may be yours please ring our Lydney branch on 01594 842185.

We have sadly had a cat brought into us that appears to have been in a road traffic accident and unfortunately not survived. She appears to be female, no older than 5 years and a golden tabby, we are unable to tell if she is neutered or not. Regrettably she does not have a microchip so we are not able to contact any owners.

If you think she may be yours please ring our Lydney practice on 01594 842185.

Top tips to help your guinea pigs and rabbits during hot weather

1. Make sure hutches, sheds and runs aren't in direct sun for any part of the day. Move them to a shady cool spot. Hutches and sheds in particular can heat up in the sun and offer no escape from it.
2. Ensure there is always shade available through the day for your pet. Try draping towels or a tarpaulin over part of a run to provide shade. Don't forget to check the sun hasn't moved around it as the day goes on.
3. Don't house your pet in a green house or conservatory or other glass building as they can heat up very quickly.
4. Ensure your pet has access to plenty of fresh water as they will want to drink more.
5. Pets housed indoors should be kept in the coolest part of the house, away from sunlight coming through windows.
6. Check rabbits and guinea pigs daily for signs of fly strike (this is a veterinary emergency).
7. Signs of heatstroke include drooling, taking short quick breaths, being very sleepy or lethargic, seizures, death. If you think your pet has heatstroke, take them immediately to a cool area, wrap in a cool (not cold or icy) wet towel and ring your vet.

HEATSTROKE IN DOGS

Signs of heatstroke to look out for include:

Panting, drooling, red gums, vomiting, diarrhoea, shaking, weakness, tiredness, unable to walk properly, collapse, seizures, death.

Treatment requires cooling them down immediately (but not too quickly) so:

Move your dog immediately to a cool place, out of the sun, or somewhere air conditioned.
Use cool (not cold or icy) water to wet them all over.
Allow them to drink cool water.
Lying them on a wet towel can help.
Phone your vet straight away for advice and to arrange an emergency appointment.

DON'T FORGET:

Most susceptible to heat stroke are short-nosed breeds such as Pugs and Bulldogs, as well as elderly dogs, the very young, overweight, unwell and heavy/long coated dogs.

Pavements can get too hot for dogs feet and can blister them. Use the 7 second rule – if you cannot hold your hand on the surface for more than 7 seconds, then it's too hot for your dogs feet.

Don't leave pets in cars, even for a short period with the windows open as temperatures inside can still soar.

Consider walking dogs in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler.

Always ensure your pet has access to shade and water.

Just to say thank you to all our clients for their patience and understanding over the last week and a half while Mark and Jake were off with Covid, leaving us short of vets. A massive thank you goes out to our vets Heidi and Charlotte who stepped in to cover, worked extra days and though lunch times to manage the work load, and lastly thank you to everyone in the team for managing to keep the practise open and running smoothly.
Mark is back to work now, and hopefully Jake will be back in early this week.

There is currently a global supply issue with cat vaccines, which means our stocks are now running very low. We have no further information when they will become available again, so we are asking cat owners to delay vaccinating at the moment. If you have received a booster reminder card, please ring the surgery for the latest advice.
Dog vaccines are unaffected so please book these as normal.

The sun is OUT! The temperature is tropical! All we want to do is eat ice cream!

Spare a thought for your canine companion in this extreme weather, as they cannot cope with high temperatures as well as we can.

Dogs are at greater risk of heat stroke at the moment, which can be fatal if not treated in time.
Particularly at risk are elderly dogs, the very young, overweight, unwell or heavy/long coated dogs.
The breeds most at risk are short, flat-faced dogs such as bulldogs and pugs, as they find it harder to cool down by panting as their airways are narrower and their muzzles shorter.

Signs of heatstroke to look out for include:
Panting
Drooling
Red gums
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Shaking
Weakness
Tiredness
Not able to walk properly
Collapse
Seizures

Treatment for heatstroke is to cool your dog down (but not too rapidly):
Move your dog immediately to a cool place, out of the sun, or somewhere air conditioned.
Use cool water to wet them (not cold or icy) all over.
Allow them to drink cool water.
Lying them on a wet towel can help.
Phone your vet straight away for advice and to arrange an emergency appointment.

Our advice at the moment:
Keep your dogs exercise to a minimum and walk them in the early morning or late evening, when it's slightly cooler.
Pavements can get too hot for dogs feet and can blister them. Use the 7 second rule – if you cannot hold your hand on the surface for more than 7 seconds, then it's too hot for your dogs feet.
Ensure they always have access to shade and water.
Avoid travelling if possible. If you have to, ensure there is a good breeze circulating to where your dog is in the car, or the air conditioning is on. Shading on the windows would be ideal.
Never leave your dog shut in the car. Dogs can over heat in just a few minutes, even with the windows open .
Consider clipping heavy or long coated breeds.
Try leaving a wet towel to lie on in a shady spot.
Placing ice cubes in drinking water can help to keep it cooler.
A doggy paddling pool in a shady spot may be fun and great way for your furry friend to cool off!

Kennel cough is on the rise in this area, so we are currently advising that if your dog isn't already vaccinated, then please book for a kennel cough vaccine.

Symptoms of kennel cough in dogs are typically a hacking cough, sometimes followed by a gagging motion or swallowing, which can sometimes be quite distressing to see. Usually affected dogs are quite bright, and will still eat and drink and want to go for walkies, although walkies may make symptoms worse. It can last for about 3 weeks, and during that time it is advisable not to allow your dog contact with other dogs as it is highly contagious. We would recommend not to walk your dog while he/she is contagious, as although the majority of dogs will recover with no problems, older dogs, or those with underlying health issues may develop complications, such as pneumonia which can be fatal.

Dogs with kennel cough don't necessarily need veterinary treatment as they will usually recover on their own, however if you are concerned then please make an appointment to see a vet. Treatment is usually anti-inflammatories, but antibiotics or further treatment is sometimes required in some cases.

The vaccine can start to give immunity after 72 hours, but if your dog is going into kennels it's recommended that you vaccinate 3 weeks beforehand to achieve full protection. As with all vaccines, 100% protection can't be guaranteed, but symptoms should be less if they do pick it up.

Please ring if you would like to book an appointment for a kennel cough vaccine.

We can't wait to get back to normal working again, but until all our staff are fully vaccinated we have decided that we will still be seeing clients outside. Some of our younger members of staff are still not fully covered, and we feel that it's too much of a risk to bring clients back in yet.

If members of staff have to isolate it is likely to shut the practice completely, and we are very aware that there is currently a real shortage of vets in the area, so we need to avoid this at all costs.

We are getting ready to welcome our clients back indoors again though, with screens in our reception areas and pet-safe ventilation grills the consulting room windows. All clients will need to wear a face covering to enter.

We are hoping we can allow clients back in once all our staff are fully vaccinated, and the government guidelines have been introduced stating that double vaccinated people won't have to isolate if they've been in contact with Covid.

But for now, car park consultations will continue. Let's keep our fingers crossed that the sun keeps shining!
