A showcase of the improvements made with Elsie and Smidge ๐Ÿพ

One of the simplest ways to improve interaction on walks is to reinforce automatic check ins. They'll improve your recall, simply because you'll have taught your dog to keep you in mind rather than taking the opportunity to make their own adventures.

It couldn't be easier, as all you're looking for is for your dog to look in your direction. If you think you'll struggle to get any interaction, start off easy. In a place with little to no distractions and progressively make it harder the more reliable it becomes. Use a long line if your dog is likely to run off, be patient and consistent

Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, each of which comes with its own unique temperaments and personalities. With such variety, the differences in breeds can also bring their own set of training challenges, especially when it comes to their response to predatory stimuli. While this may be particularly directed towards wildlife, it's not uncommon to hear stories of Collies chasing cyclists and joggers, or Spaniels obsessively searching for birds.

This behavior is a result of each breed's specific purpose and their inherent instincts. When we adopt a dog from a working lineage, it's almost expected to see these behaviors manifest. What's important for us as responsible owners is to enrich our dogs' lives by providing them with opportunities to express their natural animal instincts. For example, engaging a Collie with a flirt pole can channel their herding instincts, while offering search and find games to a Spaniel can keep them mentally stimulated.

In addition to providing enrichment, it's crucial for us to invest effort into teaching our dogs how to appropriately behave in various situations they are likely to encounter. By exposing them to different environments, people, and animals, and by consistently reinforcing desired behaviors, we can shape their responses and ensure they act in a manner that is safe and appropriate.

Eye contact is a powerful tool when dealing with any training issue. I use it to teach loose lead walking, automatic check-ins for off-lead walks, and even as an alternative behaviour for my reactive clients. However, I also employ it as a socialisation tool for wildlife and predation training.

It's such a simple and versatile behaviour that can easily substitute the urge or impulse to chase. It can be offered in a sit, down, or even while on the move, and we can utilise it on a short lead, long lead, or off-lead.

By simply managing the dogs immediate response to chase or stalk through use of long lines, we can focus on reinforcing a much more appropriate behaviour during our walks : eye contact. You can choose to reward with food, fun or toys, whichever your dog goes crazy for.

Harness the strength of eye contact to enhance your dog's training journey and promote peaceful coexistence with wildlife. Start incorporating this valuable tool today!

๐Ÿพ Understanding Predatory Behavior in Dogs ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ‡

Predatory behavior can be a major challenge for many of us, hindering our ability to confidently walk our furry friends off leash or explore certain environments. But why is it so difficult to manage compared to other training difficulties? ๐Ÿค”

In this video, I explain the reasons behind our dogs exhibiting these behaviors and the unique challenges they pose.

When we talk about socialization, we often focus on things like interacting with other dogs, behaving well around people, and handling public situations. However, we tend to overlook the significance of including wildlife and other animals in this process, which can be just as crucial.

Living in the New Forest, it's not uncommon to encounter horses, cows, and occasionally even pigs during our dog walks. In such situations, it becomes essential to teach our dogs what is expected of them, particularly when dealing with larger animals, to ensure everyone's safety.

By taking the same approach to wildlife socialization as we do with other aspects of socialization, we can help our dogs understand appropriate behavior and develop the skills to navigate encounters with different animals. This not only fosters a harmonious coexistence with the natural world but also enhances the safety and well-being of all involved.

So, let's broaden our perspective on socialization and consider the importance of including wildlife and other animals in our training and socialization efforts.

Did you know your dog has some amazing skills aimed exclusively towards predation and hunting. However in everyday life these behaviours can easily become a nuisance or potentially dangerous. Here are some examples of predatory motor patterns to keep in mind when out with your dogs

This handsome fella is H***h and he's my next intensive training project! We'll be working on his response to dogs and coming back when called with the goal of getting him under control and off lead. He's a lovely little guy who's just so enthusiastic to meet and play with everyone he sees. But we're already starting to see some progress

Tug toys are a great option for training recall and tend to be my favourite. It's fun the dogs are excitable which tends to carry through to the behaviour and most importantly you become the source of fun. You don't have to worry about them running off, cause it's you they want to interact with anyway

Some of the most common mistakes I come across when doing recall training

To create the perfect recall we first need to start with the cue. Our efforts should be aimed towards pairing our cue with something our dogs are excited about so that we can use this energy later on!

Why it's so important for us to teach our dogs recall ๐Ÿพ

Whether it be through recall issues, issues with other dogs or problems around wildlife walking a dog can be a pain in the arse. Oftentimes they don't know any better and will look to find their own fun sometimes at our expense. With that in mind, here's a few tips on what you can do to start to improve your walks.

Dog food can be strangely tribal and complicated depending on where you get your information from. But something I try to relay to my clients is that we're often told to avoid overly processed foods in our own diet for the sake of our health, whereas the same message isn't always given when it comes to our dogs. Try to incorporate a variety of natural foods, your dogs gut is far too important to overlook!

A common thing to do is call your dog back using their name. Just like we would if we were calling after a person. However in the context of training a reliable recall behaviour, this can sometimes have a negative effect. The more often their name is said without reinforcement the less reliable your recall cue will become. Changing it to something such as here or come can help to avoid this, however going for some completely different or made up such as "din!" (Something I've recently been doing with my own dogs) means the cue can stay as potent and reliable as we need it, without accidentally deteriorating

Having the know how on how to control their impulses can massively effect our dogs response to any stimulus they interact with. Whether it's to help build the confidence to stay still in worrying situations or perhaps just to stop their insatiable need to befriend everything they come across impulse control will make a difference. If you're looking to stop them lunging on lead, begin testing their skill by walking in-between something they want. Getting closer the easier it becomes. Or use stationary behaviours such as sit and down to test their ability to ignore toys and food scattered nearby. The more relatable you can make.it towards your problem behaviours the more carry over it will have when actually in the moment itself.

A lot of dogs get themselves in trouble through over the top interaction with other dogs or people. But sometimes it's not necessarily through excitement. These dogs find themselves overwhelmed in unknown situations and do their best to adapt, often making things worse! ๐Ÿคฆ

Give them a chance by testing whether or not they're actually interested in engaging with the dog or person. They may just be awkwardly coping with the moment

09/03/2023

Working with anxious dogs can often seem like a confusing topic. We're always walking on eggshells and when things inevitably go wrong it's not always clear what to do.

Well to give you an idea, you should never worry about reinforcing their reactions. The behaviours themselves are self reinforcing hence why they become more and more frequent and over the top as time goes on. Instead focus on alternative behaviours in the presence of their trigger and prioritise calming them down and comforting them in the moment.

From my own experience training round wildlife can be a nightmare. Whether it's simply walking in the forest or having your dog scale a cliff face to try catch a rabbit there's never a dull moment.

It's because of the unpredictable nature of wildlife that makes having your basic training reliable, so important. If you're not able to call your dog back at the end of a walk, I doubt they'd peel off after deciding to chase a deer through the woods!

07/03/2023

Your dogs sense of smell is arguably their most important sense. Knowing this, it's not surprising to know how effective simply scattering some treats into grass can be, whether it's to calm the most erratic spaniel or to help build the confidence of a young pup, getting them to use their nose does wonders.

Not got a foodie? Training can be quite frustrating if we're attempting to work with a dog who has no interest in taking food while they're out but most of the time there are things we can do. Adrenaline is usually the problem, this is because one of the functions of adrenaline is to reroute blood flow away from the digestive system towards muscles used for running or fighting. It's would be like me trying to give you a sandwich during a workout.

So if we focus on activities to calm our dog down or take notice of what's going on and what our dogs are looking at we can make adjustments to the training plan to compensate for our dog being over excited.

Management is the best way to get immediate results for any training issue. Dog won't come back? Grab a long line. Won't stop jumping up? Allow them to calm down in their crate or behind a baby gate before interaction.

By simply adding in a management strategy it can make our lives so much easier before we've even started training. It can also be a great option for when we just don't have the energy or enthusiasm to train that day.

Cleo is a 2y/o gsd who unfortunately has developed the habit of lunging and barking at dogs she sees. From my time working with her it's my belief that this has started off as a means of excitement and frustration of not being able to get to the dog, but have formed into a dangerous circumstance for both her owners and other dogs. As a result we're currently doing 3 weeks of intensive training.

Regardless of what started the behaviour, it's still important to take the barking and lunging seriously. She's a large breed, and should she get too close too quick, there would be a large chance of it turning ugly!

With all that aside, she's come on so far already. Each day she surprises me with how well she's adjusting and just how much she wants to learn.

Sometimes it's important to slow things down! It's normal for us to have a rest if we've had a busy week. Why should it be any different for our dogs?

If you've got a dog who panics at the sight of other dogs/people or any other triggers they may have, rest could be just what they're after. Give yourself a break and your dog. Do some tricks, play some scent games or just have a long cuddle in front of the TV.

In fact it may come in handy in the future, if your dog has an accident and needs to be rested for the betterment of their health it's best to have these days in the bank so you're not driven mad by an under stimulated and bored dog!
