Bamboo!

Our little prince was born in rescue. PawPurrs Halfway House rescued his pregnant mother Lexi (one of our other adopted cats) and she ended up giving birth in the bathroom as there were no pens available.

We fostered Bamboo and his two siblings (now in a loving home together) from 5 weeks old. After just a few days Bamboo chose hooman Laura as his forever person and a close bond formed between them. Of course, this meant that we HAD to adopt him and after falling completely in love with Lexi we decided to adopt her as well.

Bamboo is now 17 months old and loving life. Thankfully he's never known any pain or suffering from being neglected, abused or living on the streets like our other cats.

He's super cuddly with Laura and you can usually find him following her around the house if he isn't eating, playing or chilling outside in the catio.

Although he can be a bit skittish and giddy, Bamboo showed a lot of intelligence from the beginning. He quickly worked out toys, even managing to pull balls out of tracks after realising he could use both paws to grab and yank!

He loves most toys but his favourites are lasers, anything you can trail around the house and coils/springs, the latter of which he loves to catch mid air.

He gets on with all the cats as he's grown up around them. One of his favourite play buddies is Rufio, who is our eldest cat. It's lovely to see the oldest and youngest playing together! He also loves to play with Duchess. The pair chase each other around until Duchess decides she's had enough and gives him a little hiss.

Have a look through the photos of Bamboo and see if you can work out which one is him in the last one!

We lost one of our new hens this week 💔

We came home to find Kelly lying on her side as if she was asleep. Unfortunately she had passed away.

This can happen with ex battery hens. They go through so much stress and pain at the battery farm that their little bodies either give up when they're finally stress free or they reach old age faster due to their previous living conditions (they’re bred to live 3-4 years).

Kelly had only been with us for 9 weeks but she lived life to the full after her first 72 weeks at the battery farm.

For the first time in her life she felt grass and soil under her feet and the sun and wind on her back and wings.

She was able to scratch at the earth and peck at insects. Due to our set up she had a mini wood at the back of the enclosure where she spent a lot of time relaxing under a tree.

Before being introduced to the flock she would spend time at their fence watching and following them around. She even squared up to head hen Salty at one point! You can see this in a previous reel we made - https://www.facebook.com/reel/559200156393403. She was clearly a very confident girl even from her first few days with us.

She was starting to learn how to trust humans. She stopped running away in fear when we approached her and had actually started to sprint towards us when she knew we were out in the garden. Sometimes she even sat on our lap.

She had a big impact on us as well. We fell in love very quickly and although we didn't know her for a long time, a little piece of our heart has gone with her that we'll never get back.

It's funny how some people think of these beautiful animals as a product. We see them as our feathery companions. The eggs are just a bonus and a way for us to help cover their cost.

We'll miss you 💕

✨Name reveal! ✨

We recently rescued three ex-battery hens and it's taken a little bit of time for them to settle in. We waited 30 days before introducing them to the flock. There was a bit of bullying at first while the pecking order was asserted but they're now fully fledged members of the flock 😍

Have a look at what we've decided to call them!

Beautiful Lexi 😻

Lexi has just turned 3 years old. She was given up by her owner after having three litters (PLEASE neuter your cats!) and was pregnant with her fourth when she was surrendered to PawPurrs Halfway House. The charity was so full (and still is...) that she ended up giving birth in the bath.

We fostered her and her kittens before deciding to adopt her and one of the kittens (Bamboo). She was quite shy at first but has grown in confidence and has started to seek us out when she wants cuddles or to play.

If she spots us coming toward her she sometimes does a cute little head wobble out of excitement. She's also obsessed with cat grass and sitting on new boxes (or anything rectangular).

Her best friends out of the Clowder are Gary and Rufio. You can usually find these three sleeping near each other. One of her favourite things to do is to hide in a tunnel and lunge at any of the other cats as they pass (sometimes they love it, sometimes they run away in shock and horror!).
