Remember, if it’s too hot for your hands or your bare feet, then it’s too hot for their paw pads! ⚠️

If you’re unsure whether it’s okay to let your pet go for a walk on pavements, a simple way to test the temperature is by holding your bare skin on the tarmac for five seconds ⏱️

If you find it painful, then your pet will find it painful to walk on!

To protect your pet, it’s best to avoid walks during the hottest part of the day, which is usually between 8am and 6pm. If you can't safely exercise your dog, missing a day won't hurt.

JUST A REMINDER, TO ALL DOG OWNERS.

⚠️🚙⚠️ Despite the warnings, hundreds of dogs in the UK die every year after being left in a hot car. Someone you know may need to read this very important message. ⚠️🚙⚠️

SIX MINUTES is all it takes for a dog to overheat in a hot car.

Your dog could suffer serious injury or die in a matter of minutes if left alone in a car.

• The temperature inside a closed vehicle left in the sun can double within 12 minutes.

• At least 75% of the temperature increase in a closed vehicle occurs within 5 minutes of closing the vehicle, and at least 89% of the temperature increase occurs within 15 minutes of closing the vehicle.

• Temperatures exceeding 104˚ F can lead to death or serious injury for the occupants.

• Temperatures in a closed vehicle sitting in the hot sun can reach 160˚F and above. An animal will suffer immeasurably and may die before the temperature reaches 150˚F.

• Even when parked in the shade, the vehicle temperatures can exceed 104˚C.

• Leaving windows down more than 2 inches on an unattended vehicle will not prevent a car from reaching extreme temperatures.

• Even if the animal is revived, they can die due to severe internal organ damage.

Your dog trusts you to have their best interest at heart ALWAYS.
Please don’t risk their safety.

If you are not taking your dog inside your destination with you, PLEASE leave them at home where they are comfortable and safe.

BEWARE - In the last 10 days we have had TWO dogs bitten by adders, one in Langdale area and the second in the Ambleside area. Please be extra vigilant when walking through long grass, bracken and woodland, where it is advisable to keep your dog on a lead.

If your dog should be bitten by an adder you should do the following:
1) Call us immediately. We will arrange to meet you at the Windermere practice where we can use anti venom to treat your dog.
2) If possible, carry your dog back to the car. This will help reduce the venom spreading around the body.
3) Cold water bathing the bite wound can be effective in reducing swelling.

Please share to make ALL dogs owners aware.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Just over 3 weeks ago this beautiful girl, Lily, joined the Squirrel Lodge furry team. She was originally found as a stray, extremely thin and very pregnant, she also had a nasty infection. Her general poor condition meant that she lost all her puppies causing her great distress. We are working on our basic training and manners and she is doing extremely well. My older boy Bruce is much more himself now he has a playmate again, he’s never been the same since I lost my very old Dobermann Ella last September.

Clarification of when an XL Bully type dog must be neutered:

1. If the dog has been exempted via self-registration, evidence must be provided to DEFRA via a vet that the dog has been neutered, but the deadline depends on the dog's age as at 31st January 2024
(a) if the dog was over 1 year old, it must be done by 30th June 2024
(b) if the dog was aged 7-12 months, it must be done by 31st December 2024
(c) *NEW* according to a press release issued by DEFRA today, if the dog was under 7 months, it must be done by 30th June 2025

Failure to provide evidence of neutering by the relevant deadline will mean that the dog becomes non-exempt and it is liable to be seized and in a subsequent Court case there will be a presumption that the dog shall be destroyed.

2. If the dog is being exempted by Court order, the evidence of neutering must be provided within 2 months of the date of the Contingent Destruction Order. Failure to do so will mean that the dog will not be released as no Certificate of Exemption will be issued, and (unless the Court grants an extension of time) the dog will be destroyed.

Did you know:
If you have a pacemaker, you can put it in your Will to have your pacemaker donated to a dog in need after you pass. Pacemakers cannot be donated to another human, but they can be donated to dogs with cardiac issues who would depend on it to stay alive.
You can have the pacemaker brought to a vet of your choice. So many of those get thrown away and dogs die because people don't know they can do this. It even saves the dog's owner the cost of the actual pacemaker which sometimes means the difference in being able to afford lifesaving treatment or not.
