With the warmer weather coming and families enjoying going for walks, Please DONT feed horses/ponies you see on your outing ANYTHING without the owners concent.

You may think you are being kind by giving the horse/pony a treat, but infact could KILL the horse/pony or make it very ill.

Many horses/ponies have conditions causing them to not be able to eat or process certain foods and "just one small treat" can be fatal.

We always educate all of our pony pals on this subject, as it is a huge problem for many horse owners at this time of year especially.

Please share this to make others aware. Most people don't realise they are doing wrong by doing this.

While it may feel as though our muddy fields have no grass, the green shoots are definitely coming through. Get ahead of any potential problems now and manage the risks by -
⚠️ Monitoring your horse's weight
⚠️ Restricting grazing & making changes slowly
⚠️ Soaking hay
⚠️ Increasing exercise where possible ( ideally cardiovascular )
⚠️ Choose a low calorie diet

Spot the signs:
⚠️ Lameness in one or more limbs
⚠️ Reluctance to walk or turn, particularly on hard or stony ground
⚠️ Shifting weight between feet when resting
⚠️ Increased digital pulses
⚠️ Abnormal heat in the hoof
If you suspect your horse has laminitis, call your vet immediately for advice.
For support with weight management & nutrition advice for the laminitic prone please call the Saracen nutrition helpline

A horse is at greater risk of colic if there is not enough water in their digestive system, and a soaked feed helps to keep the gut hydrated

Aww Moo ❤️ in her starvation paddock. ( Miss D in the background) She has PPID and Ems (medicated) so unable to have a lot of grass so rather than muzzle for hours or put her in outdoor sand pen her and Olly go in a strip of the field with barely any grass and haynets. That way there with the rest of the horses and able to have a normal life
