With half term approaching, you may fancy a break away with the family, but if your four-legged friend isn't allowed to travel with you, then make sure you find them the perfect place to stay too. 🐕🐾
If you are visiting a prospective boarding kennels for your pet while you are away, make sure you look out for the following things during your visit.
Cleanliness – the kennels should be clean, well maintained and ventilated. Water bowls should be clean and full.
Staff – dog’s love company, so it’s important the staff are caring and experienced dog lovers that will spend time with your pooch. Ask about exercise during their stay.
Safety – are there emergency doors to prevent any possible escape?
Comfort – do the dogs have a bed area to lie in? Is there hating available for colder weather?
Atmosphere – do the dogs already staying there look happy and relaxed? Pleased to see the staff? Do the staff know the names and ages of the dogs boarded?
Barnlake welcomes visitors to view its boarding kennels anytime during opening hours, to look around and meet the staff. Our friendly kennel staff are on hand to show you around and put your mind at rest, if it’s your first time using a boarding kennels for your dog.

If you are planning to go away you want to make sure your cat will be safe, happy and healthy until you come home. Barnlake has been running its boarding cattery for more than 38 years. Here are some top tips to choosing a cattery for your cat.
• Find recommendations.
• Pay a visit.
• Inspect the facilities.
• Make sure your vaccinations are up to date.
• Make sure the cattery is licensed and insured.
• Tell them about your cat’s care needs and any medical history.
We are here to help. If you have any questions about our boarding kennels, then please get in touch.
There should be easy access to contact a potential boarding kennels by phone, email or online. Don’t be shy about asking questions, your dog’s welfare is important and a good “rule of paw” is, if you have any misgivings, walk away and look for somewhere else.
• How often will my dog be walked?
• If your dog needs Veterinary treatment, will his own Vet be contacted?
• Can they cope with any grooming requirements?
• If you have more than one dog, can they stay together?
• Can my dog watch things going on during the day, or is his kennel/building totally enclosed?
• Will my dog get individual attention and time spent with a person?
• Will the staff be able to administer any medication your dog needs?
• How many staff are employed and how many dogs are in residence?
• Is the Kennel licensed?
• Does the price cover everything? (you don’t want to return to lots of hidden charges)
Barnlake is happy to answer all these questions and any more you may have. If you are looking for an experienced, friendly boarding kennels contact us for a copy of our brochure or visit us during our opening hours for a look around.

Barnlake started serving the animal community back in 1981 when Merril and Paddy Maris first moved into Barnlake House and opened the boarding kennels and cattery.
The converted farm outbuildings now house the busy boarding kennels and separate cattery located not far away from the main house. This makes it easy to supervise and be involved with the animals, and all our methods are based on the animals feeling close to people, loved and not abandoned. The field behind the house is used for exercising the dogs, where they have special time with a human as they would at home when going for a walk.
The Training School
Eight years later, the dog training centre opened its doors. The aim in starting a training school was to help people cope with their dogs so they didn't have to become “rescues”. Training is based on the relationship between the dogs and their owners, and helping people to understand their dogs and how to communicate with them. Trying to train a dog can be a frustrating past-time if the relationship and trust is not established between owner and dog. Training sessions are held throughout the week, weekends and evenings. The training school has both indoor and outdoor facilities.
The People
The Barnlake Team both in the Boarding Kennels and Training Section have many years experience in various aspects of handling dogs and the activities involved with them, including breed showing, obedience competition, grooming, behaviour, agility, rescue dogs, and most importantly of all – the companion dog. This is the top dog in the dog world, a happy, well behaved dog which can be taken anywhere and is the owner's constant companion and joy, the envy of other dog owners!
