The rescue received a call from a lovely young lady, Ashley from Blaydon, whose dogs had found a hedgehog caught in barbed wire. One of our volunteers, Julia, went to help but unfortunately her wire cutters were not sufficient for the job. Ashley went to a nearby building site to recruit help and soon the hedgehog was free, although the wire was still through its leg. Once back at the rescue it was given pain relief before being taken to the vets. Sadly, it was discovered the barbed wire had caused many internal injuries as well as the obvious external ones, and there was no alternative but to put the hedgehog to sleep. We're extremely grateful to Ashley and Julia for enabling us to offer immediate assistance in getting the hedgehog the help he so desperately needed.

During the awful weather we were experiencing a couple of weeks ago, we received a call from Richard in Heaton who had spotted a hedgehog lying in a puddle on its side in Heaton Park. Following our advice, he went back to the park to collect the hedgehog and took it home, placing it in a box with a towel and a warm hot water bottle. Jen, one of our volunteers, collected the hedgehog, who by now had been called Bobbi, and brought him to us. Bobbi had clearly sustained an injury from a strimmer, which is now being treated accordingly, and is feeling a great deal warmer and more
comfortable, thanks to Richard not just walking by, but taking responsibility to help an animal in desperate need. Thank you so much Richard.

Yesterday we were a brought a hedgehog that had suffered a fatal strimmer injury. The poor hedgehog, Lance, was so badly injured that he was taken immediately to the vets where he had to be put to sleep. Luckily Lance was found by Jonathan and was brought straight to us. Nobody in the close vicinity of where Lance was found had been strimming, so he had obviously travelled some distance with horrific injuries before being rescued. Please be vigilant when out in your garden and take a moment to look out for hedgehogs before using any tools / machinery.

Two of our hedgehogs required Veterinary attention this week and were taken up to Powburn as arranged. Whilst there, a gentleman was handing in two leverets who also needed expert help. Following the best advice given to the man by Cheviot Vets, he then offered to support a local animal charity and the practice recommended us. £50 was immediately paid onto our veterinary account which is absolutely wonderful. Very many thanks to the gentleman for such an amazing offer.

We were lucky to be able to release more hedgehogs this weekend. Some of those released were Fred who went to Wooler and Jack, Pumpkin and Elvira who went to Seghill. We also have been sent photos of some of our previous releases enjoying their time visiting the feeding station in Sandra's garden in Whitley Bay.

With so many releases last week, we had a lot of deep cleaning to do. While we clean all of our cages every day, every time a hedgehog is released, their cage needs to have a deep clean ready for the arrival of another hedgehog. All of the joins, corners and hinges get a thorough clean.

A big thank you to Lesley for the Puppy training pads from Amazon. These are brilliant when we need to use our incubators. Thank you also to Gemma and Elizabeth for dropping off newspapers. Every volunteer uses so much every week so it is always much appreciated. Thank you again to Elizabeth for her donation when she dropped off the papers. We are so grateful for your thoughtfulness.

Pauline brought Benson to us on 1st December as he was clearly too small to survive the Winter, weighing just over 300g. Since coming to the rescue, he has made excellent progress and Pauline asked if we would put a photo of him on Facebook when he was being released. He has now been released, very close to where he was found and will be supported by one of our excellent volunteers, who puts out food and water nightly for her prickly visitors. We're more than happy to show you a photo of Benson as he is now - a much bigger boy than when he arrived in December!! We hope you enjoy the photo of Benson taken just before he left us to enjoy his freedom back in the wild. He'd tripled in weight whilst being here so will hopefully now go on to help produce the next generations of Bensons!

Thank you for bringing him to us when he clearly needed help Pauline.

On Sunday two of our volunteers spent the morning deep cleaning.
The outdoor garden had a good sweep over, all of the hedgehog houses got a thorough clean and packed up with new straw bedding. The feeding stations were washed out and set up.
Then they carefully relocated the disabled hedgehogs from Melrose House, the winter dwelling, and that too had a thorough clean out. The houses and feeding stations were all washed out too. So grateful to get a sunny but windy day to help with the drying out.
It’s a dirty job but very satisfying 😝

It’s our garden safety post. If you have a pond, you can make it hedgehog safe by installing a ramp. Last year we had a hedgehog brought to us who was stuck in a pond. Luckily we were able to save it. Here’s a video to show you how to make an escape ramp. There are also escape ramps available to buy.
