Do you know how to spot blue-green algae?

Exposure to blue-green algae can cause long-term health problems in pets and can even be fatal. By drinking from or swimming in contaminated water, pets are at a high risk of becoming seriously ill.

Over the summer, our vets see a lot of dogs who have issues because of grass seeds. It is important to contact your vet immediately if you suspect your dog has an injury caused by a grass seed.

If walking your dog in long grass or woodland areas, we recommend checking your dog over and brushing away any grass seeds after the walk is done. Pay particular attention to paws, ears, eyes, and armpits.

Do you have questions about neutering your cat? It's something we strongly advise as it has many benefits for them and helps to tackle the number of stray cats in the UK.

Female cats will benefit from reduced risk of unwanted pregnancy, certain health conditions and even certain types of cancer. For male cats, neutering reduces their urge to fight other males, lessening the chance of certain diseases, and it also means they are less likely to mark their territory around your home.

It’s important to keep your pet hydrated all year round as it delivers lots of benefits to your pets health, but especially during the warmer months. Cats and dogs both sweat through their paw pads, so as they’ll do this more now it’s hot, they will need to be provided with more fresh water. 💧

Pets can develop skin allergies at any age, so it's important to make sure you know the signs and symptoms. Dogs may start scratching excessively, whereas cats may start licking their belly, back, or behind their legs more than usual.

The most common skin allergy is called atopic dermatitis, and although it's a lifelong condition, it can be controlled and managed, meaning your pet can lead a normal and healthy life. Treatments may include medication, supplements, or even newer monoclonal antibody treatments.

The law is changing - from 10 June 2024, cats in England must be microchipped and registered on a database by the time they’re 20 weeks old. The penalty for not microchipping your cat could be a £500 fine. A microchipped cat has a much higher chance of being reunited - please microchip your cat. Dogs can pick up kennel cough multiple times throughout their lives, but in most cases, they can recover in a few weeks.

During this time, you should encourage your dog to rest and avoid collar and lead activity as it could put more strain on their respiratory system. You should talk to your vet if your dog’s cough persists, or if you notice any changes in behaviour such as a reduced appetite or less energy.

Is your rabbit protected against Myxomatosis? This highly infectious viral disease has a very high mortality rate and can leave your rabbit prone to other infections.

The best way to protect your rabbit is to vaccinate them, especially as there is no cure if your rabbit becomes infected. There's also ways to reduce the risk of your rabbit catching the virus.

Making sure your rabbit has the right diet will not only keep them healthy and full of the nutrients they need, but can also improve their dental health and regulate their digestive system.

Hay and grass should make up around 80% of your rabbit's diet, this can be fresh or dried grass, but they should have unlimited access to it. They can have a small amount of vegetables each day, around 15% of their diet. Rabbit-safe vegetables include broccoli, carrots, courgette and green beans.

This involves a request from an unknown number impersonating Medivet and asking for payment via a link. Usually a text, but possibly an email; there may be mention that your pet is injured or needing treatment.

He is extremely friendly. He was brought into us by someone a few days ago for neutering but then the phone number we were given does not work and no one has called to pick him up so has essentially been dumped with us before Christmas 💔

After 7 days we will send him to rescue for rehoming if nobody comes forward. Please share for him ❤️

It's that time of year again folk!

Hey all!
Hope you are enjoying the Bank Holiday weekend. Many of you know that staff here are involved in animal rescue in our free time. Along with other local animal charities, we have been working on a fun day and would like to invite you to join us. Monday 28th August (tomorrow) 12-4pm. There will be dog show, human games, stalls, creepy crawlies, inflatables. Why not come along and join the fun? We will be there rain or shine so bring brollies and wellies if needed!

Alisha, one of our current students brought her rabbit in today for a procedure.

She’s a huge rabbit at a whopping 3.9kg but an absolute beauty. And nearly as big as Alisha!

This cat has been brought in to us, apparently he had been left by his owners a long time ago when they moved out. We will start to look for a home for him but in the meantime he will do his 7 days here in case anyone comes forward for him. He is not microchipped

🌞 Heat Wave🌞 Remember to make sure your pets stay well hydrated in the heat wave! These two are loving their new water fountain!

Bonnie has the right idea enjoying the fan to keep cool! Dont forget although it is cloudy it is still very warm out there so take care of your furry friends. Dont walk your dogs in this heat, keep all your pets well hydrated and watch out for signs of heat stroke. Why not try some frozen treats to keep them cool. Be more Bonnie, stay indoors and stay cool and safe🌞🐾

👩‍🎓Wisdom Wednesday👩‍🎓 continued.... this is bonnie post injection! Jumping and happy to play!🐾

👩‍🎓Wisdom Wednesday👩‍🎓 ( SEE SECOND POST FOR AFTER VIDEO) Cant get up in the morning? Not wanting to go for walks? Feeling miserable and achey? And that is just the humans! Well did you know that your pets can get arthritis just like we do! Signs include slowing down, not wanting to walk much or play, trouble grooming, and many more signs that can be more subtle. If you feel that this is your pet, we can help! Bonnie has recently started a medication called Librella as she was struggling to get up and down the stairs and didn't want to play or jump. This is a monthly injection that can help dramatically with arthritis. We also have a cat form called Solensia. Bonnie's owner has said she is now like a puppy! These videos are before and after librella! What a difference! 🐾

This is George. He has been brought into us as he has lost the use of his legs! He is a bright and happy little guy! We have devised a sling for him to stand for himself whilst supported and splinted his feet into a normal position,this way we hope (with time and physio) he can build strength back up to stand! 🐾

We never know what surprises we get through the door and this was a very cute surprise! Just look at these two!!! Little Cream came to us in a bad way after an accident at home. Cream needed surgery and a lot of love and care but as you can see is now on the mend. Cream came for their last post op check last week and has doubled in size and is back to normal! 😊🐾💖🐣
