Meeting new puppies in the practice is one the biggest joys for our team. Getting a new puppy can be very exciting but also a challenge and there is a lot that needs to be considered with a new puppy- health checking, correct diets, vaccinations, microchipping, flea & worming, puppy socialisation and pet insurance.

At Medivet we offer complementary puppy checks to provide opportunity for health checking and to discuss all of those important aspects of puppy care.

It’s exciting when you get a new puppy, but make sure you cover the basics so that you and your puppy can look forward to a happy and healthy future.

It's International Cat Day!

Here at Medivet Swanland, we appreciate the unique quirks of our feline patients and recently celebrated achieving our Gold Cat Friendly accreditation with International Cat Care.

This included making some feline only clinics, some extra home comforts on our wards, lots of happy kitty pheromones and our feline waiting room among others, as well as additional training for our staff.

Why not celebrate International Cat Day with us by sharing pictures of your lively felines, past and present.

If anyone is having a clear out and has some old towels (any sizes welcome), we are starting to run low.
Towels are used throughout the hospital to help 1) keep our patients warm and toasty 2) provide a means of gentle restraint for our feline patients for blood sampling and such, in line with our Gold Cat Friendly status. 3) old towels that have holes in are cut into smaller ones for our bathrooms where they are used like 'single use' hand towels but rewashed to avoid the waste of paper towels. 4) and of course drying off wet patients!

We are running low due to having needed to dispose of some which had been uses for infectious patients where we could not be sure usual disinfection protocols would be sufficient.

So if you have any old, holey, stained or unwanted towels, please drop them by our Swanland branch where they will be gratefully received.

Thank you in advance

Computed Tomography or “CT” is a computerised x-ray imaging procedure which facilitates veterinary surgeons with state of the art diagnosis. Thousands of digital images are taken of the body to create a 3-D image to enable assessment of the internal structures in a non- invasive manner. Patients may need to be anaesthetised but often we can perform CT scans under sedation.

Here at Swanland our vets & nurses will regularly perform CT scans on our patients to aid diagnosis & facilitate treatment. Often we may also diagnose other diseases or abnormalities which we would not have known about had we not performed the scan.

We accept referrals from other veterinary practices for CT scanning and the images are analysed by CT specialists.

Meet Chip, this beautiful boy was in for his second vaccination today with one of our vets.

He's super adorable and we know he's going to continue to grow into a lovely handsome boy.

Friday morning puppy snuggles were the best way for our vet to start the day and his owner was kind enough to let us snap his picture and feature him.

Isn't he so gorgeous!! 😍

We’ve seen lots of problems with grass seeds in recent weeks. They can end up down dog’s ears, in their paws, and can also end up behind eyelids, in nostrils & can even be inhaled. Grass seeds can cause no end of problems so please be mindful when letting your dogs off in the long grasses.

Symptoms can include head shaking, snorting, sneezing, swollen paws or digits often with puncture wounds or discharge, squinting and chronic coughing.

Over the summer, our vets see a lot of dogs who have issues because of grass seeds. It is important to contact your vet immediately if you suspect your dog has an injury caused by a grass seed.

If walking your dog in long grass or woodland areas, we recommend checking your dog over and brushing away any grass seeds after the walk is done. Pay particular attention to paws, ears, eyes, and armpits.

At Medivet Swanland, our patients come in many forms, be they big dogs, small cats, small mammals and even some birds and reptiles.

We are general practice vets who also help to work up and look after some of the more complex patients, within the varied skill set of our incredible vet and nursing team.

The picture below is Cleo. Cleo was a very complicated patient, having arthritis, pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, anaemia, kidney failure and diabetes (as well as a few other conditions). Her diabetes was detected at one of her regular visits for her arthritis injections, and she was treated and stablised for that. Sadly she developed the additional conditions and was hospitalised, quite poorly in August last year. After long discussions with her lovely owner, we were able to formulate a plan to try to manage her conditions.

Cleo was in her late teens and her mum knew that with all of her conditions, she was on limited time, but she diligently brought her in every month for her injections to help keep her quality of life balanced, as well as giving her her diabetes injections and other medications at home.

The thing about Cleo, was that she never was terribly appreciative of our efforts in person and in fact, her regular vet with us lovingly referred to her as her 'spicy little meatball' because Cleo was furious with us, virtually all of the time. As a quirk, she would NEVER bite her mum, and thus her mum carefully held her for her injections whilst Cleo loudly voiced her discontent (but was very happy at home between visits, and her injections made her feel a lot better).

Cleo recently attended a visit with her regular vet with us, who was able to see a dramatic change in her condition, and it was discussed that sadly, she may be approaching the end of her life, particularly as she didn't even want to bite the vet that day! A few days later, her condition declined and our night team were able to help her on her final journey.

Her regular vet said "Cleo was one of those patients you never forget, she was a lovely cat at heart, but her spicy character in clinic was legendary, and her monthly visits were almost a signal that we were getting towards the tail end of the month. I will miss those visits".

Whilst we may not always express it, we have many regular patients whose regular faces in our clinic helps to brighten our weeks and months and Cleo was certainly one of those.

With this post is a lovely photograph of Cleo of in the garden, in the sunshine, something she greatly enjoyed doing.

Cleo's story and photograph are featured with her owner's consent.

Did you know you can now book routine & non-urgent appointments online?

We allocate at least 200 vet & nurse appointments every month which can be booked online through this link.

Booking routine appointments online means less waiting time on the phone line & also helps keep our phone lines free for more urgent cases & enquires.

Please note it is not possible to book operations or procedures online and we request you contact the surgery directly on 01482 633888 when you need to book surgical or diagnostic procedures.

If you require an animal health certificate for pet travel or anything else more specialist or if you wish to see a certain veterinary surgeon then it is advised to call the surgery to book your appointment to ensure that you are booked with the appropriate clinician.

Sadly we have had a geriatric stray female black cat with no chip brought in from Scunthorpe.

She was in a very bad way & struggling for her breath despite treatment so sadly we have had to put her to sleep on welfare grounds.

If you think she could be yours please ring the surgery.

The Swanland team just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to all of our lovely clients for being so patient with us over the last week or two.

The 24-hospital has been experiencing a very high case load, much more than usual for this time of year, also busier as we also supporting several other branches in the region.

This has meant that some of our clients may have had to wait longer for appointments than we would have preferred. Whilst everyone is understandably worried about their pets when they are poorly our vets & nurses have the difficult role of triaging & prioritising our more urgent & emergency patients as best as we can.

We are working really hard as a team to offer the best service that we can possibly can and this is always more challenging when we experience higher case loads of urgent & emergency cases as we have been doing in recent weeks.

So again a huge THANK YOU from the whole team for your kindness & patience. It is much appreciated by the team!

With permission from his owners, we’d like to introduce you to the wonderful Merlin, enjoying his first taste of Laser Therapy!

We are really proud to announce that Medivet Swanland 24 has achieved GOLD STATUS with International Cat Care and is now officially a “cat friendly clinic.”

The team at Swanland have worked really hard to achieve this level of accreditation as caring for our cats & respecting the specific needs of our feline patients is really important to us.

We now have allocated cat friendly appointment times, separate cat hospitalisation facilities, a separate feline waiting room with a screen, cat tower & carrier covers, and our team has received additional & up-to-date training in cat handling, feline behaviour, treatments, nutrition & hospitalization.

Our aim is to reduce any stress & anxiety to enhance our feline patients experiences at the veterinary clinic which in turns allows us to better diagnose & treat their problems.

A special thank you to all of our team who have helped us achieve this outstanding accreditation 🐱😻

Here are our vets Barbara & Krystyna performing an endoscopic examination on an anaesthetised patient.

Endoscopy is an amazing tool which enables us to non-invasively examine with a small camera deep inside the body including the gastrointestinal tract and the respiratory system.

We are able to collect small biopsies of tissue or secretions to facilitate diagnosis, assess for tumours & inflammation and also retrieve foreign bodies that some pets may have ingested such as socks & rubber balls, or accidentally inhaled such as grass seeds before they can cause serious problems.

Endoscopy can often make a different as to whether a surgical procedure needs to be performed or not.

We will often take referrals for endoscopy from other veterinary practices as well.

Summer time is tick season. Ticks are endemic in woodland & countryside environments and can easily attach themselves to dogs & cats brushing past.

It is really important that we protect our pets from ticks & the diseases that they can carry. Fortunately there are a range of anti parasitic spot-ons or tablets available to prevent tick-bourne disease so please discuss these preventative treatment options with your vet.

We were really pleased to be able to attend the RSPCA Hull & East Yorkshire centre today for their whopping 200th (!) anniversary celebrations & funday opened by the Lord Mayor of Hull.

Swanland vets have worked closely with the RSPCA Hull & East Riding branch for many years from when we were independent & now as Medivet continuing to support the charity with the treating & rehoming of animals in the local community.

The team at the Hull branch and the charity trustees work tirelessly & with dedication and they rely heavily on the donations & kindness of the general public.

They do an absolutely superb job and we are proud to be able to support them and do our bit for the animals of Hull & East Riding most in need of our help.

Say hello to Topaz who came to Medivet Swanland to see our lead vet Paul for a health check today.

Topaz is a five year old female bearded dragon who is very much loved by her owners! We couldn’t resist asking for a photograph & permission to post as she’s gorgeous!

Exotic pets benefit from regular health checks for clinical examination which also providing an excellent opportunity for discussion regarding the specific husbandry & nutritional requirements to help keep them healthy & happy.

Meet Jack and Barny, 2 of this mornings smaller critters in for health checks.

Jack the gerbil was nearly falling asleep during his examination, and Barny the hamster enjoyed a nice cuddle.

Whilst they might be a little smaller than the cats and dogs that make up most of our patients, it's always nice to see these well loved small pets.

Maintaining the highest possible standards of inpatient care that we can is very important to us at Medivet Swanland.

So this week we were incredibly really proud when Medivet awarded Patient Care Assistant of the Year to our very own Leann Clark.

Leann works tirelessly in our hospital wards ensuring that our inpatients are well cared for, cleaned, fed, walked, kept as comfortable as possible, as well as being fussed & loved whilst they are with us.

This personal care & dedication is just as important as the veterinary care & treatment that the pets under our care receive from our vets & nurses.

Congratulations Leann! This award is well deserved & we are incredibly proud!
