Gastric ulcers are the result of naturally occurring acids damaging the lining of the stomach – and are typically a by-product of stress. They are a common condition that affects all types of horses at any age and the incidence of gastric ulcer is higher than most think. Up to 100%of race horses and 11 to 37% of pleasure riding horses can be affected.
Veterinarians have long been aware of the high prevalence of gastric ulcers in racehorses and other types of performance horses. However, recent studies are revealing that gastric ulcers can be triggered by the activities of horses used for leisure, including trailering and light work.
While gastric ulcers tend to be under-diagnosed, the pain and impact they cause can be significant and include:
- Impeded growth of foals – and, in some instances can be fatal
- Colic in foals and occasionally in adults
- Temperament can be adversely affected making training and handling more difficult
- Hard to maintain adequate food intake
- Loading for transportation and behavior in the trailer can become challenging
- Optimal health, fitness and performance cannot be reached
- Emergence of stable vices, including stall walking, cribbing or weaving
Delighted to announce that we can now offer short term and long term frozen semen storage for artificial insemination.
Frozen semen can be essential for mares who are easily missed with the benefit that semen is ready on site at all times, for stallions outside the EU, high-level competing stallion who are not available for chilled semen or stallions who have already passed away, as is no time limit or expiry for semen stored in liquid nitrogen.
Competitive packages for frozen semen insemination are available.
In conjunction with the support and outstanding facilities at Appleton Grange Stud for mare boarding and handling, they are proving to be an exemplary centre for equine reproduction in the North East.

Only one week after her accident, Kitty is happily trotting round the paddock. She has some wounds to heal on her face where the skin had become necrotic from being laid down on a hard surface, and there is still a little bit of swelling to go from around her eye, but everything is looking great.
Meet CHARLES!
Charles is a 7 year old Thoroughbred. After being retired from racing, he was bought 2 years ago by Lauren for all-round use but especially show jumping. Ever since she bought him, he has always dragged his toes. This had progressively been getting worse.
When we first saw Charles in February, he was dragging his toes very badly, had a very short crabby hind limb gait and could not maintain a canter on a circle for more than a few strides.
He was diagnosed with sacro-iliac joint inflammation and we medicated this with long-acting steroids and advised on rehabilitation, feed and feed-supplements and the continued use of physiotherapy. After 12 weeks, we have been to revisit Charles and happy to give him a clean bill of health.
Massive credit to Lauren, who followed the proposed rehabilitation plan meticulously and Charles has never been better. He is showing really good engagement of his hind legs, his toe dragging has resolved and he is cantering for fun.
As I often see horses when.they don't feel that great, I always love to hear it when they are doing well! A lovely report from Sophie Bambi McDearmid and the fabulous Chester. They have come such a long way with patient and dedicated training.
"Team NOC has had an incredible week"
Starting last Sunday at the British Riding Clubs Area 2 Winter Showjumping Qualifiers. It was our first time contesting the Open (1.10) class and our first time representing Darlington and District RC.
Things didn’t go entirely to plan due to low light levels meaning we couldn’t warm up so had to jump our biggest ever class cold with just two jumps in the main arena before starting. Despite this Chester jumped fantastically picking up just 4 faults in each round to finish 5th individually and help his team to 1st, qualifying for both of our first Showjumping championships in April!
This Sunday we travelled to Osberton for the EMDG Annual One Day Event. In a class filled with some very experienced combinations, Chester held his own!
One of his best tests at this level for a 36.8, a fantastic rideable sj round which got me very excited for the future. He had an unlucky inexperienced pole in a short treble, but he found the height very comfortable and we both enjoyed the round. Moving on to the cross country with our new brakes in tow (bomber happy tongue 2 and a half ring with curb), Chester was phenomenal. He played his way round the course and made everything look and feel very easy!
He finished in the top 20 of a very tough class.
What a way to start our season!
Sophie & Chester
